I was wondering if you do what I do too when there're lots of replies posted under my last post. I kinda find it annoying to be constantly notified from shitposters and thus, I unwatch the thread and disable the notifications. The downside (it's only one  Tongue) is that I may miss a high-quality post from someone who may have quoted me.

Why don't this forum just notifies the users if they get quoted? Isn't it an obvious “must”?
Oh, it's so annoying. Back in 2017 I created a thread named - Will we ever see bitcoin lower than 1000$? and it got up to 20 page in just 17 days. My real intention was to really discuss about this but as I see, it was filling with nonsense posts. I think you should always leave notifications enabled on threads where you don't expect a lot of posts and where mostly quality members will post. Otherwise, when there is discussion about global things, always expect spammy posts.

Notification on forum when someone replies to you or writes your name is a must but I guess we can't get it, especially when this forum works very differently. When you quote someone, it's just plain text and that's all.

Your question sounds like when will we get a new forum software? Cheesy

As for telegram, I know that it is required for you to give your phone number in order to register. Does the bot owner know it or any other private information about you (like email address)? I've made a telegram, but I'm a newbie.
I think your number is safe and not revealed. Even on your telegram setting, you can be able to disable your phone number to be revealed to only your contacts, or not to be revealed to no one, if it can be revealed to bot without warning, it should have been on the setting.

Some bots need extra data from the user to work properly. For example, knowing the user's location helps provide more relevant geo-specific results. The user's phone number can be very useful for integrations with other services, like banks, etc.

Bots can ask a user for their location and phone number using special buttons. Note that both phone number and location request buttons will only work in private chats.

So, I think even if a bot will need access to your phone number, it will request for it and you will need to grant it access before it can be able to.

Can one talk behind your back? No! Even if intentionally avoiding to mention your name!  Cheesy Grin
The two software is different with pluses and minuses on both sides. It doesn't make it bad (and you don't have to feel "defeated" either). I mentioned it so OP can choose knowing all that.

I just remembered and I'll use this space for it: from my use it seems like the telegram notifier will also tell you if a post was changed and your name is in the changed post; the less annoying one seems to be missing those. It's not something that happens often, but it did happen to me today.
TryNinja re-checks the posts after (I think) 5 minutes, and (I think) he also checks all other posts on the same page for changes when he scrapes it anyway.

I find it weird to unwatch my threads [to not miss out on a good poster who may find it later ] When my thread becomes a home for shitposters I don't ever look back except someone quoted me. I always leave room open for additional information/suggestions.

Exactly that's what we discuss. A notifier for only mentions and quotes. Exactly for leaving the option to not miss the info addressed to you. If such a notifier is in use, the threads don't really need to be watched any longer. Nothing weird imho.

there's LoyceV much less annoying notifier too
Hmm, this seems a better solution, thanks!

I use unwatch button to the thread I made post hoping that I will not see it again on my "Show new replies to your posts." and yet the thread keeps poppin although I already unwatch it. Am I using the "watch" feature wrong?

Open thread > read a few replies> get satisfied> ignore.

I'm a newbie too on Telegram, but afaik only Telegram itself knows your phone number. Everybody else will get/know an user name, exactly like on Twitter or here on Bitcointalk.

It's not just a name I thought of. It's the reason I'm using it. Big thank you for implementing and offering it for us to use it.

There are the Telegram notifiers
This is one of the reasons why I used the Telegram Bot made by TryNinja, it's super effective and useful for those conversations that are worth replying to.
The Telegram bot created by TryNinja is super effective for quote notification, I think that is what experienced users of this forum have resorted to. Or, are you implying that there should be a forum notification, like also through the email directly?

I gave up on the forum's "notify" a long time ago, I didn't like the emails. I used to use "Show new replies to your posts", until I read theymos' post on how to use the watchlist. Now I unwatch threads when they turn into spam megathreads.

I like the name you gave it Cheesy

Since I started becoming active on multiple forums again, a second monitor has been totally necessary. Working on a single screen has simply been a huge huge struggle that I'd might as well call it a disability.

Thankfully, since all I did since the pandemic was to sit in front of my computer and work anyway, I finally convinced myself to invest in a 34" monitor!

I totally dread the day that I'd finally need a 3rd screen.

Same here. CTRL+TAB just feels out of place. Nothing beats gaming on a monitor while reading the forums on another.

Well, monitors are pretty affordable these days. I'd say go for it if you have the extra cash to spend Wink

I usually keep getting notified for a while (in most threads) until I decide it's enough. Sometimes it's hours, sometimes it's days. Of course, in the less active threads I might forget though now and then...
It's not easy to decide when you want it to stop...

There are the Telegram notifiers (merit and mention too), there's LoyceV much less annoying notifier too where you just visit a page to see if you were mentioned or quoted... the tools do exist even if not part of the forum software.

Honestly, I don't even use the show last replies button. I just go to my last posts, and take a look at the threads. However, when you spend a lot of time on the forum, you generally know most of the replies with regular browsing.

I totally dread the day that I'd finally need a 3rd screen.
It's a godsend. Especially, if you are doing designing or programming work. I can see it being useful for posting on forums, and what not, but definitely not something I'd invest in simply for that. For programming, especially when looking up documentation, and writing the code I wouldn't want to work without three screens.

And yea, my "forum browser" always has like 15 tabs open.  Lips sealed

Man of culture I see. That's why getting a second/ third monitor is a bread and butter to most of us :p

I don't use Watchlist or any of these notification bots. I prefer ''Show new replies to ypur posts'' where I check topics whic are interesting for me.

Why don't this forum just notifies the users if they get quoted? Isn't it an obvious “must”?
It's same thing can be said like about all features that we are missing on this forum. It would be difficult to add new features on this old forum version. And probably notifications will be on new forum software.

I don't really bother with the watch list or any notification services being circulated about.

Ditto. I personally use a separate browser for my forum thingys, and I just leave the tabs open for those topics that I'm really interested in, or those whereas I'm expecting a quote reply to my response. I just close certain tabs if I lose interest with the topic or when it already becomes spammed with "those" kinds of replies.

There are lot of telegram and bowser notify bots created by lot of members so its not really in the priority of to do list from theymos I guess. I don't opt for watch and notify feature since I subscribed to multiple telegram bots which notfies me whenever my post gets quoted even if someone mention my name in their post.

I don't really bother with the watch list or any notification services being circulated about. I just visit a thread that I liked every so often. Hasn't really failed me up to this point. I have used the watch list in the past for saving certain threads, but no longer use it for that. If the watch list was designed a little more intuitively I probably would be more inclined to use it.

It depends on how much I like the topic, if it's not that important to me, I remove it from my watchlist. The notifications I use are for different boards like Services, Local Boards, etc.
