I think there is no concern of Numismatic about the digital coin or money. They tend to reserve old coins, historical coins. It is obvious currency method will change day by day. So I think they don’t hate this crypto coins

If you are a currency collector "Numismatist" you will not prefer to collect digital coins; I gather things to boast about owning, digital currencies restrict it to being numbers and not something to touch.

Perhaps owning bitcoin in a physical form is much better since it has a physical presence and value increases with time.
Also in the future, we may see a new update of Numismatist like collect Pokemon and collect digital one.

Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. While numismatists are often characterized as students or collectors of coins, the discipline also includes the broader study of money and other payment media used to resolve debts and the exchange of goods.

A lot of them expands their interest in more things associated with money, so it is not just physical coins or paper money. I have seen people collecting, contracts / Bond certificates / Credit cards etc.  Grin

Yes, sorry I should have added the source for the definition of a Numismatist - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numismatics   Roll Eyes

Casascius physical bitcoins is normally not dated,

i haven't really checked Casascius coins but apparently there are different versions, some contain bitcoin (mini private keys that hold bitcoin).
so they ARE dated, in fact their dates are the strongest and the most decentralized dating mechanism that you can hope for. how? it is linked to coins (a transaction output) on the bitcoin blockchain. the transaction that is included in a block that has a timestamp Grin

If you look at the underlined part of the definition of Numismatics, then you should not hate Bitcoin or Crypto currencies. Do you think they classify Bitcoin/Crypto currencies as a payment media?

Do they prefer physical objects over digital payment media? If there are any Numismatists out there, please give your opinion on this subject, because I am very curious where you stand on this. I am a coin collector and I love all forms of payment media.

They shouldn’t. Numismatics anyway have a lot of fiat coins to collect. If they want to branch out, they can collect physical bitcoins as well. If coins decrease in circulation because of adoption of cryptocurrencies, then their collections will become more valuable.

Casascius physical bitcoins is normally not dated, so they will have to change the design to add a date and these coins are just a fake representation of the real currency. If you add a paper wallet with a hologram and some bitcoins, then these coins will increase in value, if the private key is not exposed.

Yes, digital currencies will increase the value of old fiat currencies, but some collectors also buy uncirculated new coins that are minted, because they are more valuable than circulated currencies.

I too have a small coin collection which started about 30 years ago when a family
friend gave me their box of coins.

Coin collecting and Numismatics is in decline, at least that is the sentiment I have
read on one of the other forums. There seems to be a noticeable drop off in the
number of young people getting interested in the hobby.

I dont think this is to do with bitcoin and crypto because FIAT currency is moving
towards a digital space for a good number of years. Really since in my country
have stopped being paid in cash for the last 20 years and more so in the last 10
being paid electronically.

There are still many physical crypto Coins and tokens which are collectable, just
look in this section of the forum for inspiration where there is a constant trade of
coins > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0

We tend to forget that the decline in Numismatics are also being caused by the whole scope of the digitization of money. PayPal and people using mostly credit cards are definitely having a significant impact on the decline in the use of cash/coins/paper money and most arcade games and casinos are using smart cards and not coins or physical tokens anymore.

It is actually sad, because coin collection is a form of art in many ways and a very cool hobby.  Grin
