yeah but when you have more than 3-4 KVM's become a bit expensive
nope a KVM switch i need that more ........ a KVM will do that same thing but better imo ...
Never had that 4mh problem running dummy-less.
I just have to work with the 640x480 screen size, isn't much of problem after it is setup and you learn how to work with it.
Different mobos may react differently to running without the plug, so it is not a bad idea to have some just in case.

Although my rigs work without dummy plugs, the resolution is 640x480. Using these dummy plugs, 1920x1080 is available, much easier to work with if troubleshooting is required.

I don't use dummy plugs, not on the H81 Pro btc boards, AM1 boards, F2A88X boards, Z170 Boards.
both with RX480 and GTX 1060 / 1070 and 1080 (everything on linux, of course
)
there is a trick to read the EDID from your monitor, save it to a file, and then feed it manually to the X window, so it will not check if the monitor is present or not, which is great when you wanna control fan speeds, overclocking or enter remotely via VNC, because the OS thinks the monitor IS connected
if there is interest i can find my notes how to doit, and post it.

BTW: I did that mod with the VGA-DVI adapter back in 2013 when it was necessary to do it, but nowadays makes no sense because there are no more analog GPUs, all modern GPUs has DP / HDMI / DVI-D only, no DVI-A anymore.

If system crashes it will boot, first start it wont.

pro btc board can boot without dummy but you have to set the internal video card on as primary on the bios. it sucks though bad. I use dummys
so..it must be the boards.....using old socket 775 boards here
It will boot but will run at 4MH/s for the main 16x pcie slot GPU.
I use dummy plugs mainly to get a usable screen resolution when using remote management software such as VNC. Since my main workstation is a 4k screen, the default 640x480 or whatever is way to small and even some windows such as the Wattool do not display fully.
I use RX470/480's almost exclusively and all my rigs will boot without the dummy plugs, indeed I have only about half the number of plugs as I do rigs so I often have to swap them around.

You have two options .
High price around 10$ can get you HDMI dummy plug that will emulate 2K or 4K screen for easy management when you use remote desktop.
Cheap price around 1.5$ can get you HDMI to VGA converter that will get the system to boot but only at 640X480 if you using remote desktop to install the drivers ,you can connect a monitor once after you install drivers once and raise the resolution and leave it at it is .

Yes. Their about $10 on amazon, if you live in the US. But if you want to DIY, that seems like an okay solution.
