Bitcoin is not a "Stupid" name but I'm afraid the terms "bitcoin" and "mining" are barriers to adoption and add an unnecessary layer of obfuscation to noobs when trying to explain what it is.  When I send bitcoin I'll often send a link to the receiving address to the recipient on Blockchain.info for confirmation.

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked by a noob "How do I get my coins out of the block chain" or think they have to push the "request payment" button on blockchain.info to "get their coins."

The major issue with it is the reference to "coin."

People want to pluralize it "how many bitcoins do you have"
not "how much bitcoin do you have?"

The understanding that 1 bitcoin = 100000000 satoshis is not easy to grasp right away, or that you can have .21023943 "bitcoins" due to this common understanding of what a coin is.

lets say it was called Grargurr

you'd easily say "How much Grargurr do you have?" or "I am worth # Grargurr."

To put it another way, Gold.
I have 10 kilograms of Gold.  I have 10 one-kilogram gold coins.
Not "I have 10 golds."

So that's the main problem with it. But with something as disruptive as bitcoin is, i have no problem with it redefining how we think about "coins"

I don't like it, but that's just my opinion, too simple name for a complex and new currency.

I immediately associated "bit" with "bittorrent," too - coin with cash. Decentralized cash. Seemed pretty straightforward.

i think it's a fantastic name, the masses are getting more techy with time and would "get it" as adoption increases.

using the word for "fake natural resource" would make me not want to invest into the currency. it's the avatar natural resource.

I think its a decent name, considering the fun new names the altcoin community has been coming up with. Tons of originality on that forum.

I dunno, just 'credits' would probably seem confusing ("Hey, have you heard of Credits?"). I suppose Cryptocredit or Bitcredit would work, but pretty much every other cryptocurrency has a 'coin' suffix so it seems to be working ok so far.

I'm telling you man, whenever I explain this to people who are extremely non tech-savvy, I inevitably have to use pop-culture references anyway, and Credits are so well-known from sci-fi movies that it's what I end up using anyway.

At any case, the conversation doesn't go "Hey, have you heard of Credits?", Bitcoin is still the name for the technology. Just that when the time comes to explain how you get "Bitcoins", you say that you get Credits into your address in the ledger, and you can send Credits to other people in the system. That way you bypass the inevitable "But what is a Bitcoin?" question, where I always have to explain that there's no such thing as "a" Bitcoin, and that it's just credits moving around in a virtual ledger.

Personally, we're all here at least somewhat tech savvy, so you could call it the Dog's Bollocks for all I care and it would still make just as much sense to me. But when explaining to people who don't know and don't care for techy stuff, I have to use pop-culture references, and "Bitcoin" just doesn't cut it. Sci-fi authors have already done the work for us in preparing people for futuristic digital currency called Credits. Might as well capitalize on it.

Especially since you know eventually we'll all use Satoshis anyway. Just rename Satoshis to Credits and done.

I think the name is one of the reasons people don't take us seriously. When I tell them about it, they're like hmm "funny name"... Surely there must be better alternatives.
see this -> BITCOINS [BIT] + [COINS] Bit from BITs, since is an electronic way(or digital if u care that much...) of sending money...
every data is transferred to one chip, to another, and is all using bit(electric signal pulses) one bit is one piece out of 8, from a byte...
So that's why the BIT, now the coin...well...no need to tell right?
so BITCOIN...like -> coin being send using BITs, Billions of bits but...are bits...

Any way..

No, no better name if u put a lot of tough on it...BUT i'm sure those peoples who say that, that  is a 'funny name' as u say...they don't know shit about IT

Yeh, another name could make bitcoin Stronger? i don't know, probably, cause when some one doesn't why the name is bitcoin...why would they thrust on it? make sence...that's why we need to make them believe on bitcoin, convince them to use on all day basis..

Me and my friend are finishing some online store, it's mainly for Brazil, BUT...may, may be for other country's too.
if anyone who know stuff like that can and do some with bitcoin, it will Grow, that simple...very simple..
Sorry for long text anyway...

And again, sorry for my bad english...i'm not THAT good on it for now....ps: i'm getting better ha ha

Yeah I totally agree. It's a great name for the technology itself. But for the currency, the actual units you transfer from one another, it's misleading, it's arbitrary at 100million "satoshis", and yeah, it sounds silly.

Personally I'd love to see it be called something people already know. Like credits from every sci-fi movie ever. It would make it much easier to explain to new people.

Everyone will be spending $atoshi's eventually so don't worry.

I think Bitcoin is a great name and don't see any problem with it. What do you suggest it be called?
