There is no copyright on bitcoin logo, it has been registered in a public domain and hence it is free for everyone. Anyone can download it , use it for their personal purpose and there is no need to pay for anyone. There are some websites which are selling the modified logos of bitcoins, people should done some research before paying for the logos as these logos are easily available freely.
In reality there is no physical or legal person who may be responsible for the proper functioning of bitcoin or the fulfillment of the rules set by him or the supervisor,Thats why I think that there is no copyright on bitcoin logo,But I don't understand why are you interested in this issue.I think in another situation there will be problems about decentralization and it will lose its value,People use  bitcoin because it is a decentralized and If bitcoin logo owns the creator this would be nonsesnse.

Interesting topic.. didn't know that once you altere the original logo you could get into trouble for copyright infringement.

I agree to their side. It doesn't fall to either trademark or copyright laws as it can be freely use by anyone. It cannot be covered by trademark as it is not a company that provides services or product it is just a virtual currency. It cannot be copyrighted as it is not made by an author nor we can identify the artist who created the said logo. Also asking it on another way can you declare or own the rights to the symbols of Fiat currency for the U.S. dollar or Euro? I guess not as it is the symbol for that currency and anyone can use it.

As the titles says

Regarding using graphics on the net and bitcoin logo

Is it open for public/commercial use freely? Or will Getty images / ect start hunting for using bitcoin logos

Logo Bitcoin isn't restricted by copyright. You can safely use without fear. I didn't hear anyone having any problems because of that. More information can be found on wiki or google.

One of the greatest aspects of bitcoin is that nobody owns it and nobody can own it, not even the government or the authorities. Everyone is entitled to use it or to have one or two or more. Anyway, if we think about that concept and relate it to the bitcoin logo, I think it will also be applicable since it is a public domain. That's why if we look at some of cryptos that was a result of a bitcoin fork, the original version can still be distinguished.

Completely free to use. You can find most of the information on wikimedia, so you are good to go if you want to use it in some sort of graphics. Smiley Good luck!

As the bitcoin logo appear in every search engine you can consider it free because it will not be uploaded if it is not open for public, it's logo were uploaded for the sake of letting all the country in this world know about the idea of crypto currency so it can be adopted or accepted, and for further is it's centralization.
True, it's free as everyone has been using it and those companies that will use it without permission will be sued copyright infringement.

But as others said it is for free so, we are all free of using it.

I think we all own it.
We don't actually own it, the logo is free to use for everyone as long as it's for bitcoin use and other relative use.

This is a good discussion, I didn't even thought about this before.

The Bitcoin logo is part of the public domain and can be freely used and altered for commercial and non-commercial purposes:

Best thing is that you can find bitcoin logo on shutter stock website where people are selling it for money. I won't be surprised if people even buy it from there when first thing they do is search for royalty photos to buy from and but whenever they want. Also saw this with some other alts logos on there.

But yeah it was built by community for the community to be free. Same like dollar has its own sign, bitcoin logo nest is representation of this cryptocurrency.

I think we all own it. Everyone that is using has the right use it whenever or wherever they want because I know that even Satoshi want it that way. If Satoshi appeared and prove he is that guy that he can definitely owns its rights.

Intellectual property rights infringement, Copyright infringement and trademark infringement are all different things.

The intellectual property rights may be in the public domain, but that doesn't give you the right to copy nor the right to infringe on another organisations trademark.

It is a public image and not private...
of course, This is for the public, but suppose a company wants to use a bitcoin logo in its company, it must require approval from the bitcoin itself. Can I use logo bitcoin freely? I am also still thinking about it.

How to acquire approval from the Bitcoin itself? Do you have to burn coins as an offering to the almighty blockchain gods? Grin

Seriously though, the Bitcoin logo as posted above is public domain but derivations of it may be subject to copyright as stompix rightfully pointed out.

Don't forget to offer some virgin wallets while you're at it Cheesy.
And since both BTC and BCH are using the same logo, which god should we pray? This looks like the 30 years war all over.

But now seriously, if a guy that has spent 6 months on this forum still thinks BTC is an entity...
What chances do we have to explain to some 50 yo that has never touched a computer how bitcoin works?

Lol.

Thanks guys clears it up... I modified the original to incorporate it into me own logo.

I have always wondered why Satoshi never spends any of his / her or their coins let alone profit from copyrighted logos (would have made such a killing on royaltees for use-age)

I think there probley dead, or lost there original wallet for that genesis block or some kind of conspiracy but we can save that for another topic ay! Wink

It's free to use wherever unless Satoshi comes out of the dark to claim it and gather all of the licensing fees lol

The original one, Yes! It's free to use. You can find it in the public domain here,

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bitcoin_logo.svg

Like mentioned above There are many variations of the original design made by different companies. I feel those can be copyrighted if sufficient modifications are made.
