Op I really like such ideology because many people really love  hangout especially in terms of things that is related to forum, but we have to know the nature of these if its really possible to executive and also programmed it accordingly, more especially boards by board, because I think these will bring a new innovation to the community, and also attract more people into cryptocurrency transactions.

Bitcointalk on the other hand is more privacy centered and I would rather not link my personal profile to my online identity on the forum.
...
Meeting "random" members who just wish to hang out and who I do not know beyond their pseudo username bears some level of risk as you're trusting them with that information.
That is why I suggested creating an alt account if you want to meet someone so the other person doesn't know who you are on Bitcointalk if you aren't comfortable with that.

That's one thing I forgot to mention as well about the safety aspects of meeting up with a newbie. They could be the alt of someone you don't like that much or even someone who has a grudge with you. That could actually be very dangerous especially when in most cases you don't know what people look like here so that could be exploited very easily. I have nothing against people if they want to meet up with randomers or users of any rank but for multiple reasons I think it's better keeping meet-ups private or with users who you and friendly or familiar with. I really wouldn't advise people meet lower ranked members one on one. Groups are always best and meetings in public places. You can always choose to meet people you get along with from those at a later date.
The other person wouldn't know who you are (since you are using an alt) so they can't have a grudge on you. It works the other way around if they use an alt as well. If I have a grudge on hilariousetc, I can't have a grudge on skittlesBoy who is looking to meet someone in the Denver area on Friday to talk Bitcoin.

You guys seem to forget one thing. I am not suggesting this be the standard when meeting people. My initial reply was about a concern someone posted who didn't want his online identity to be tied with this real identity, but he still wants to meet people face to face. One way to circumvent that is using an alt not tied to your original account.

If I want to meet a specific user or become friends with that user, of course none of this bullshit I posted applies. I would contact that person and see if we can get together.

But again, who wants to meet with a random newb? Maybe I'm out of the loop and this happens all the time but would you meet a random person off the internet you've never seen or interacted with before? Depending on what sort of meet up it was I think you'd be able to work out who some users were even if they were 'anonymous'. CryptocurencyKing mentioned above about the Watford FC gathering and I bet if I showed up to that people would be able to figure out who I was on here unless I was being purposely obtuse.

Bitcointalk on the other hand is more privacy centered and I would rather not link my personal profile to my online identity on the forum.

But the forum is against creating alt accounts, everything is getting complicated all day here.

You can have as many accounts as you want here. It's only against the rules if it's to ban evade, but that is rarely enforced.

No, it’s not really against the creation and usage of Alt accounts, but rather disfavours abuse and unethical exploitation of them (i.e. meriting between them, participating in the same campaign – which is very often disallowed, bumping threads in fake conversations, skipping bans, etc.).

There are many legit reasons for creating alt accounts (i.e. distinguish business from personal opinion, bounties vs opinion, fully powered environment vs on-the-move, etc.). Some people state them clearly as linked, other’s don’t, and some are easily inferable.

It is fun to meet a community of bitcoin lovers in person and is also a way in itself to help bitcoin gain more fans. But I think people will still consider their anonymity in this forum so it will be difficult to get to know each other.

I have joined a local community group where there are lot of people there I know and some of whom I have met. However, I still haven't published my identity on the forum due to privacy reason so I can still be anonymous while arguing with them on the forum. I believe meeting the bitcoin community in person is a good thing to know a lot of thing we don't know about bitcoin and everything, but I haven't thought about meeting people from different countries due to language barrier.

Not quite long ago, I saw a partnership or whatever it was, I guess last year with Watford football club with a speculated probability of booking reservations using Bitcoin for some VIP members. It was pretty much a good idea especially with the fact that, it was very safe, at least that was how I viewed it.
We value privacy very much in this forum and one of that reason is for the issue of security as it could be very damaging should you meet with some strange user or user you don't know much about but, seemed to have earned some level of trust between yourselves in the forum. A relationship could be built from here no doubt but, be sure of your safety before meeting out with anyone at any point in life.

Now imagine posting that when you're some kind of a famous member on bitcointalk who usually reports shitpoters or busts scams and you're travelling to a third world country. I reckon they wouldn't miss the golden opportunity to beat the sit out of you.

There are legit meet-up groups on sites like Meet-up which should be used instead.

You'd be surprised some of those famous ones might be totally opposite IRL, like being reserved/ quiet Grin

There are probably still people out there who hate me from the days I was a Mod at Rollin's Chatter Box. That's one of the reasons I like my privacy.
Exactly that further justifies my point of why meeting random people from bitcointalk is a bad idea.

I'd be curious to meet people, but I know from past (dating) experience it's usually not how you expect people to be Tongue
Tinder is shit. Tongue

And, as I have always said, pull a gun on me, take my wallet & phone. It's still not life altering money. If you have that much on you when meeting someone you only know from the internet then you're a dumbass.
Agree. So the board should be called "I'm in the area if you know me personally let's hang out".

You are not meeting some random person, you are meeting a fellow Bitcoiner. Whether he is a Newbie, Member or Legendary shouldn't matter.
It does matter: once word gets out you're meeting Bitcointalk members "in the area", a $5 wrench attacker could easily register for just that purpose.

Yeah, but I was thinking more along the lines of where I have met people before. Very public very well traveled places.
When traveling you meet at Cleopatra's Barge at Caesars in Vegas or Westside Burgers (now out of business) near Zion that kind of thing.

If someone is coming into your area and you say "lets meet in the dark alley next to the methadone clinic" and you do that's on you.

Same thing goes the other way, someone is coming into my area and says "lets meet here" if I don't know the area and don't bother to check that's on me.

And, as I have always said, pull a gun on me, take my wallet & phone. It's still not life altering money. If you have that much on you when meeting someone you only know from the internet then you're a dumbass.

I think trying to rob someone of their crypto would probably be easier and safer to do than with the money in their bank. When you've got a load of high-net worth guests
I wonder the same when watching Gold Rush on the Discovery channel. They're in the middle of nowhere with loads of gold.

I could have sworn I saw a "Kidnap and Covid missed connections" listed under the special boards. Smiley

I wonder if anyone will ever be a target at one of these organised crypto meet ups. I think trying to rob someone of their crypto would probably be easier and safer to do than with the money in their bank. When you've got a load of high-net worth guests like Vitalik Buterin etc turning up to some of these speaking events I imagine they would be an easy hit. Do those guys have security? Crypto meet ups have even been done on cruise ships. I believe John McAfee, Bobby Lee, Roger Ver and Brock Pierce were all on the 2018 CoinsBank Blockchain Cruise. I'm sure there's a good heist film idea there  Grin.

Subject kind of says it all. One of the other boards I am on setup a section like it a couple of years ago and it seems to have been somewhat popular.
Not like the "meetup section" that we have now for been meets but more 1 on 1.

Something along the lines of, "I'm going to be in the Zion National Park area for a couple of days next week, anyone want to grab a beer and a burger?"

I know we are a bit more privacy focused then a lot of online places, just wondering if anyone would be into it.

-Dave

Why not, I think that would be quite interesting.
A few years ago, in the Croatian part of the forum, we arranged our offline meetup through the forum and it was great, one of the best meetings in my life.  Grin
It’s really nice to meet people you’ve been in communication with for a long time.

I think DaveF is asking for a board more suited to one-on-ones or a casual hang out sub. Group meetings are for more likely to happen (and safer) but I still don't think the meet up board is even that active for group meet-ups, though what he's requesting can obviously also be organised in there.

It is a nice idea Smiley We can meet other bitcointalk users and we can exchange some knowledge with. Though, I'm worried with our security, not that I am judging some of our co-users here but we aren't sure of what may happen if we will hangout with some strangers we just met online. Just being careful Smiley I suggest we can use some platforms like discord aside from using telegram and twitter.

Well in that case you're still meeting a random person but who is just interested in bitcoin. If people just want to meet random people who are into bitcoin then sure, but I wouldn't want to just meet up with any randomer and I'm sure most others won't either.
I would definitely not either. I've discussed Bitcoin with a couple of people IRL whom I met on some other platform (preferably one where my identity is already known; the part which I choose to show). Bitcointalk on the other hand is more privacy centered and I would rather not link my personal profile to my online identity on the forum.
Some people may have built strong relationships which has gone beyond the forum, but imo, this should only be between a handful of people at most. People usually only want to meet someone if they get along or at least have had some sort of rapport. The level that people have any interest in bitcoin here is going to very greatly as well. Probably 50% of the users are here only because it's profitable for them. I'm sure many don't really care about bitcoin that much other than that.

Can't casual gatherings for these kinds of events be squeezed in the meet-up board we already have? Sorry I myself personally don't know what is allowed or not in this board since I never really read topics in it but just always past it by when I'm searching and reading topics. Just by looking at the recent topics right now you will see different types of events not only the formal ones.

So just a section of kind of what I said. "I'm here anyone want to meet?" (and no @hilariousandco not tinder) then hangout for a few hours and leave. If nobody responds so be it

Just do that in the Meet-up section. As with all new sub boards they're created if there's a demand for them so if the meet-up board turns into some sort of hook-up or lets hang out board then maybe theymos will create a sub for them. I think you would be less likely to get interest for one-on-one meet-ups or smaller gatherings though and if people get friendly here or want to meet up it will probably be done through PMs etc like I know it has before. I'd also bet 99% of the people who have showed interest in this here wouldn't meet up with a random person even if they were in the same city.

The point is not just for "Hey Dave I'm going to be in your area" but also "I'm on vacation hiking in Utah anyone else here?" or "Stuck at this lame ass 3CX training seminar in Jersey anyone local?" That kind of thing. I would think a lot of us are showing up to the same conventions / meets / seminars but never have any contact.

Just a thought.

-Dave

Sounds like you really need Tinder  Grin.

This is a welcome development but quite unfortunate the forum is more interested in the privacy of its users even in the local boards people care more about their privacy  they don't talk about who they are and where they live I think the creation of a " hook up board" won't be a bad idea, it would create more unity among the members of the forum, there are so many members who contributed much, spend years on this forum and passed away without meeting anybody in real life from the forum maybe we should uncover the masks sometimes it would mean alot to some persons.
If you want to meet crypto enthusiasts but don't want there to be a connection between your online profile and your real identity just make an alt account and suggest a meetup. Say where you will be and that you would like to meet like-minded people. It might even be interesting, like a blind date. You don't know who is coming, but it is not important. Both parties will be there as crypto fans, and that is the only thing that matters. Friendships can be formed this way if you both hit it off.

This could also protect you in the event a forum user tries to meet a famous Bitcointalk user to rob/blackmail him. Have your pocket knife with you just in case. Cool

I would like to show my interest as well [without factoring in complications due to Coronavirus] but given what it takes for theymos to create a new board/sub-board, I think our best route would be to go with hilariousandco's suggestion [not the latter part Cheesy] and only push this idea back to the top once there are enough threads for having such board.

Personally, I love the idea of where people gather with the same—wavelengths or interests in a place. Connecting to people is one of the important things for development. It might not be for everyone, but it's still the best way to move forward with improvement in anything, like conventions and events.

Anyway, for 1-on-1 meetings, it's great. Meeting someone who you know nothing but posts in a forum could be the start of a great relationship. Even with differences in race, religion, upbringing, etc., you would still know nothing BIG of a difference between different people. That's what I miss about traveling the most. Communicating with people and learning about new stuff and their culture.

I love traveling and I would totally be interested in such a board. Would love to meet up btctalkians! However, this is a very sensitive time I mean covid and stuffs. After lockdown, maybe. I don't think there are many people from the place I live, but it would still be fun nonetheless. There's a discord server for the forum, we can also discuss meetups there as well. Because since this forum is too huge and public, people posting their addresses here might bring bad consequences as well! But the idea is nice!

I know that I have been traveling for both business and pleasure over the years and had contact with people from online. Just a forum post about "I am here" and someone saying "I am too"

I was at DefCon over a decade ago and from the Hybrid car forum I was on at the time wound up having a few drinks with another member while talking about IMA vs HSD and a host of other things. Barely spoke about tech stuff. Same thing a few years earlier when I was traveling with a pilot friend of mine who had a nice discussion about some aviation things that I barely understood. And summer 2018 I was in DC and met up with 2 people from the motorcycle forum I was on.

So just a section of kind of what I said. "I'm here anyone want to meet?" (and no @hilariousandco not tinder) then hangout for a few hours and leave. If nobody responds so be it.

Yeah, Covid is limiting travel at the moment, but it's not going to be here forever.

Same thing with OP.  I think I know the area you live in, and if I were planning on traveling into the city I'd contact you beforehand.  So I'm not sure how useful a feature like this would be, or even if it would ever get used.  I could be mistaken, but I don't think there's a hell of a lot of off-forum socializing going on.

Most people would like to hangout but after seeing and contributing in boards like Bitcoin discussion, meta, technical board, economy and many more your interest in meeting to hangout board would just go down like what is happening in the off-topic board, well if anyone is interested in hanging out can make that know in there profile bio with a specified telegram account or any preferred social sites.

I'd be very interested in something like this except that I don't really want to meet up with total strangers.  Jet Cash, you're someone I'd love to meet but if I were ever planning on going to the UK (which is where I think you live), I'd drop you a PM beforehand to see if you'd want to meet up.

If we take into account that we are people from all parts of the world, that we are more or less all focused on privacy and that social distancing is very important at the moment, I do not believe that such an idea would be successful. Maybe something like this would be successful at the level of local boards where people still know each other much better, have no language barriers and are close to (relatively) each other. I know that some people from the forum are friends in real life, if the memory serves well, the guys from WO even posted pictures from their gatherings.

Here is something planned for the 15th anniversary of the forum Suggestion: Bitcointalk 15th anniversary meetup in Arnhem

I could be interested, but we have a problem with all the Covid rubbish at the moment.

I can't imagine there's much demand for this. Just use the meet up board if necessary. Or tinder  Grin.
