Why would anyone want to buy a wallet.dat file when the owners failed to remember the wallet password?

Ignorance mostly...  I'm certain that 99% of these types of sales are just the wallet owner wanting to make some extra money so they encrypt their wallet with a super strong password and sell it to ignorant users who think they might have stumbled on a lottery ticket.  Sort of like selling covered call options, only in this case it is impossible for the option to be exercised by the buyer.  I'd also liken it to Bitcoin mining for idiots, as solving a block is not only more likely but in most cases also more profitable.  In other words, it is how an idiot would try to "mine" Bitcoin.

I had two wallet.dat files 6+ years ago. One had if i remember right about 1.7BTC and other close to 6BTC. I gave that with 1.7BTC to friend but he never managed to crack the code but when he checked balance he said it was empty and as for 2nd wallet I have no idea if there is anything inside.
With the current price that BTC sells for I think I need to check my "old" usb drives.

BTW, both were downloaded many years ago ( back when BTC was going for <100USD ) from links provided in pastebin.

Your "wallet.dat" file should NOT have recent outgoing transactions.
How do you even confirm this information to say it meets your requirements of not recent transaction going on on that wallet

- Your "wallet.dat" file should NOT be on the list of the ones I already have
Besides file size would you be able to differentiate the two files? What would stop someone from just renaming a file to wallet.dat  or just providing you with an old wallet without giving you without  a password.

You know what just stay away, simple as that.

I've got wallet.dat with 3.27 BTC (my private from 2011). Still don't remember password. More info in PM.

It amazes me that at least once a week I am contacted by people with these fake wallets that literally give me the hints that are posted from the sellers of these fake wallets.
I am trying to run a legit password cracking business for people that have actual wallets that belong to them.
So if you are one of those legit people please reach out.

me too, I keep sending them link to this thread and most of them doesn't seem to be surprised.

Some time ago I bought two sets of files, most of which had either the left hash, or the files were damaged at all, so I gave up ... Now, however, in light of the fact that I have some new hardware at my disposal (A100 and V100) and a new idea related to the source of possible passwords - I will gladly try to scan wallets using this source and my equipment. For one wallet, it takes one day to scan all the possibilities that match my pattern. I propose a 50/50 split in case of deciphering.
If you are interested, please contact me.

Hello,Antoni! I saw your post about wallet.dat files and i would like to tell you that 1 year ago i successfully cracked an wallet.dat file with 2.40 BTC. I have some good system with 16 RTX 2060's and if you still have some wallet.dat files with balance,i can start working on them. We can split 50/50? My email is Nikolai [email protected] , text me if you're interested. Greetings from Bulgaria!

Hello

I got some wallet, like 340btc, what info do you know about the password ?

I have a good hashrate with hashcat, but not sure if i use the good command, because each wallet is different.

I am looking this wallet :
https://allprivatekeys.com/wallet/10.8309BTC
Seems to be easier if it's really 8 char, with lowercase, digits and symbol.

I don't think this is a correct password hint.
If a password generation tool such as keepass is used, cracking is almost impossible.
ok i see
So finally all of these wallet is impossible because they probably have more many words....
and not good hint...

It's better to try to bruteforce seed phrase with word list now ? Cheesy
I don't know if we can with hashcat
