I never have received a PM as begging merits however once I received a request in PM to review one user post in Bengali thread for merit.

I don't know people still tag merit beggars nowadays but I remembered in the very early months after merit system was kicked off, I saw many neg tags on merit beggars. Anyway, such merit begging behavior is discouraged by forum community.
That's a forum thing and nothing related to trade, I think no one should tag on suh case rather reporting them to the moderators as breaking forum rules "begging".

Such PMs are not only merit begging and discouraged but it also breaks forum rules somewhat. I am sure such users who send those PMs usually send it to multiple users. If one of receivers report such PMs, merit beggars' accounts likely be banned.

I got such PM's multiple times. I'm not really sure why people think that's good idea to beg merits in PM. Do they really expect to get it in such way?
It's just a way how NOT to get merit. It's more likely to get banned or get red trust. Though, personally, I newer bothered to report such accounts. It's just not worth to waste time for such accounts.

It may take some time but each man should stand up on their own in this community. I started from nothing and it took me more than 2 years to get up to this rank and will have a long way to go to the top. this is how it should be, because we are not here to rank up, we are here to learn, and from the knowledge we acquired in our journey here, we shared them to newbies. There is no shortcut to get you to rank up real quick, every legit user here has made some good contributions to the forum to earn their respective title.

What if they PM you unsolicited burger shots alongside the plea?

I think I've only had a couple at most. I have had a few thanking me for making their bones which wasn't necessary but pleasant all the same.

I opened several merit giveaway topics here in the past, in the beginners section of the forum, and as result I also received a few unwanted private messages asking for merits.
I really don't like it but didn't report it or gave negative trust.
I decided to gave them second chance but I hope they will learn quickly, otherwise somebody else, with less understanding, will report them.

I think I’ve only been hit one or twice trying to ask for merits in a subtle way (as opposed to being direct). Obviously I read through and ignored these messages, but these sort of actions will likely have the opposite effect, and get the person added to an ignore list (or even reported for unsolicited PMs, although a single stray non-batched message may not qualify as spam).

Ignoring messages from Newbies probably goes a long way in reducing messages of the kind (although it does not apply to Newbie Copper Members, who can bypass this setting).

On the whole, anyone who PMs(*) others asking for merits is not really going to make it that far up the ranking ladder.

(*)Some exceptions may apply (i.e. some people may ask to be PMd by someone, in order to be reminded of a sort of merit commited"debt").

But why does anyone think someone will just give them merits for sending out a pm to higher ranked members?

Are they trying to play the victim role and want the higher ranking members to feel bad?
~
It's something you probably end up doing when you try too hard and are just desperate to do anything for that sig campaign minimum required rank. I don't know where TMAN has gone, but he/she has given a ton of Merits away to deserving members (I've seen 50 Merits given for a single post more than 5 times). Newbies are drooling for these kind of giveaways but always forget the fact that members receiving such large amounts of Merits per post deserve it.

Ok that makes sense. I mean TMAN does it for a reason, well because its valuable Info or a great Thread! Not because he has too much and just wants to get rid of it.

So Im pretty new and yes I get what Merits are and have sent out Merits for posts that in my opinion have deserved them.

In my opinion just be yourself, answer Threads, post helpful infos and just enjoy being here.
The Merits will come... or not... not a Big Deal!

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
And in general, don't look for any methods that help you rank up fast, they can easily backfire, just learn about Bitcoin in your own pace and then try to make good contributions to discussions.
I've been a newbie as well but that hasn't made through my mind that I'll ever send a pm to high rank members here. There are many ways to rank up, it's just a matter of who you emulate here in the forum in terms of ideas and other ways to get merits or post where these high rank members are posting because if they notice you, chances are you'll be getting those merits and one more thing make some interesting topics as well.

I used to have that one on, but then decided against it.

1. Sometimes I need to send pm to Newbie-ranked users, so I'd have to manually turn that box off and then on.

2. Sometimes there are important messages coming from newbies, I don't wanna miss that and I don't want to leave any other contact info on my profile.

3. When I said "newbies", I meant low-rank members, the last such message was sent to me by a Junior Member.

I completely get what you mean. It's just that in my case, what are the chances that a newbie would message me for something that's actually important and not spam? Probably 3%? And with that 3%, there's a good chance that 90% of the inquiries can easily be answered by creating a topic instead. The only reason I could think of opening my inbox to Newbies is when I'm selling a service.

From a low ranked member's point of view, I can say that begging is the worst, most pathetic way of earning merits. Providing that a merit is worth 10-15 USD on gray market, is some one's pride costed exactly the same begging for a merit? To me, merits are not only for ranking up or reducing spams but also a measure of a member's abilites. Yes it is not always true that the more merits you have, the more talented you are but if you can't gain a single merit within a thousand of posts then you should look into yourself again.

I can easily give away a merit if some one ask me. Don't get me wrong here, it's just like you give a couple of bucks to a homeless beggar. There are a number of members who have 99 merits and need 1 more to reach full member rank or many decent members whose posts are overlooked. If they need help, I will give a hand. But like mentioned above, if a member with 0 merit among an endless of posts ask me, I will definitely reject.

So, what's the real problem? Why they send messages to beginning merits?
Most newbies just want to get instant merits, they don't want to learn and give a contribution.

The same reason why those kinds of people easily fall for "bitcoin doubler", "bitcoin cloud mining", or "bitcoin investment" sites. They simply want the money asap. Spending time and effort for a long-term earning opportunity is a waste of time for most of them apparently.  Roll Eyes

7. No begging.
It is clear, begging is not allowed. So, whatever the reasons, no way to ask merits.
A newbie who sends messages for begging merits surely will get nothing as high-rank members must know well that it breaks the rules.

Actually most high-rank members are quite generous nowadays. They are waiting for quality posts made by newbies. I think many of them don't set a very high standard to merit a newbie. At least the newbie's post: (1.) on topic, (2.) informative, (3.) useful, and (4.) written in the right way.

Even, I found a thread dedicated to members who support newbies: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/top-200-members-who-support-newbies-thanks-5034141.

I'm out of merits else I'd have merited this one.

No need for that, I'm already legendary, and I made this thread because I was going though my inbox and realized that it's not uncommon to receive this kind of messages, and other forum members might be getting much more of them. So, better give your merit to some newbies who make really good posts.

It really annoys me while also makes me feel very bad for a newbie whenever he/she sends me a PM thinking that I'd just "gift" them a merit without any efforts taken by them to earn it. I feel bad for them because I was also a newbie once and I know many will criticize me thinking of me to be lucky that I was a Legendary before the merit system, but trust me my newbie friends, it took a lot of efforts for me to be here. Don't just give up and hustle up if you want to earn them, just be who you are and write less but write meaningful and you'll definitely gain a lot of merits.

It is sad indeed, I understand that some people might come from very poor countries and to them ranking up and joining a campaign seems like a good opportunity, but begging won't achieve anything, and even if some people would give them merits, this won't solve much, you can't really rank up from begging, and without good post quality you can't join well-paying campaigns anyway.

Me either.....
There is no shortcut to gain merits I know how hard is to earn merits but if you focus on contributing here on the forum and helping newbies. I'm sure you can earn merit.

Just keep helping people and always contribute to the topic that can help "topic starter" to solve the problem.
