Thanks Barntech. The only thing I could find on how they do it is this:

"Tests of a single chip have already given a result of 4 GH/s with 4,5 watt of powerconsumption. Thanks to Burnin’s unique design, an adjustable external clock enables overclocking."

That was taken from www.asic-hardware.com. They are really charging a ton for the units, probably don't even break even and people are really really complaining about the prices.

It is worth mentioning that Bitfury (here on this forum) said these chips (on June 8th - 1st Gen?) would get 5Ghash/s when first announced. So, perhaps Burnin figured something out creatively?
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/ann-bitfury-is-looking-for-alpha-testers-of-first-chips-free-money-here-228677   Something must have been there initially for them to mention 5Ghash/s and that number is also what Burnin has mentioned
and is still working on. I haven't heard anything about water cooling or anything out of the ordinary.

One would think that if these chips could be overclocked to the 4-5Ghash/s that the designers would suggest how? And what is it about an external overclocker that an internal can't do?

Anyway, I'm sure you have come across that but thought to throw it out there again. Burnin was working with just the Avalons, then he gets the Bitfury chips and suddenly can overclock them
to 4 stably? Interesting...

Lots of luck in your work,
IAS

ps - Would it be possible to add an external clock unit later on if we figure out how to get these up to 4Ghash/s?

Barntech - Any idea on how they can be overclocking the 2Ghash/s chips to 4Ghash/s chips with an external clock controller as mentioned above?

Hope all is well,
IAS

Hey IAS,

Yes this is possible with an external clock controller chip. We actually have one of those on the thumb but not on the boards. We will play around with it and see what we can get, but to be honest, when you're running the chip that hard, you'll be looking at serious power draw and serious heat. the sweet spot for efficiency is around the 2 mark. If you have great cooling and free power then cranking it will be possible. I can't tell you at this point how high we will be able to get ours, but i'll publish that info as soon as we know.

Any updates on the development?

All news is good news!

Hey Zeek.

Updates are that we're still working on the firmware. Taking some time, but coming along. I'm also moving to get all the logistics in place so that we're ready to roll when the chips land. Making sure everything is ready to go. I'm hoping that i'll have a more solid update for you later in the week. On other news, i'm gonna be needing shipping payments from everyone soon. I'll be putting up a table with shipping costs and a form for payment. Will have that sorted soon. Also i'll be needing assembly payments from those who have currently only paid for chips. I have contacted many of you already and will be in touch with the rest across the next week. If you know this is you, please feel free to pay through the assembly fees now. BTC is preferred but i can make you a paypal invoice if you can't pay in BTC.

Just a thought.. Should batch 2 maybe be in a new thread?

Hmmm maybe. Happy to do it if people would rather keep them separate. I kind of like having it all in one place though. I'm also hoping that Batch 2 sells out quick enough that it all becomes one batch.

Just paid for my DrillBit THumb that Barntech had put aside fore me. VERY excited!

Did you put one aside for me too?  Grin

I'd have to talk Barntech. Something tells me you might have to wait till Batch two though..
Only reason he held onto a few for me is because I did the website. Tongue

So could someone clarify:

The way to control the 8 chip boards is by plugging into a miniplane?

Then what does the miniplane plug into?

How are these controlled? Standalone?

a single 8 chip board I believe gets power from a 4pin molex connector, and plugs into USB to connect to your pc/rpi

if you have multiple 8 chip boards, you can get the miniplane to connect up to 4 of them to ATX power connector, and then USB to your pc/rpi

they dont plug into the network like the block erupter blades do..

I have an interesting question that may have already been answered.

So are you planning on using an external clock to facilitate overclocking? I've noticed several posts talking about the idea in the bit fury research thread. Seems like we may be able to raise the clock without increasing the voltage on the board too much and raising heat. I am very excited to overclock these boards!

Well, Burnin was talking about getting these chips to 5Ghash/s, which hadn't made sense... till now. Perhaps adjusting the clock was the way, as the possibilities are most likely limited. If the chips are built very very well, anything is possible.

Any numbers you can share with the findings so far? I've only heard of going from 2Ghash/s to 2.5-2.7 range.

Thanks,
IAS

edit - Here is mention of getting these chips to 4Ghash/s with external clock control. Nice. Any chance of enabling this Barntech?
