Someone a ways back made the suggestion that we try to do our mining together when we get our equipment.
For the past two months I have been on a semi-private pool. It's free at this time. Withdrawals are 0.0001.
It's 110 THs or so and purposely stays under the radar to avoid hacker issues.
The guy who runs it is opening it up for a while. Normally it's invite only with a minimum of 500 GH/s. (He has 13 TH/s!)
Even if you don't want to switch pools full time I recommend it as a very solid back up. No downtime in my two months.

The PCI-E mentioned previously are the PCI-E 6-pin Power Plugs for the miniplane and dual scroll like the ones used on the back/top of video cards:



If you're not using a miniplane nor dual scroll, then each board has a molex power connector.

The data connection between boards is proprietary and can't be used to connect to your computer.  Instead you would connect to your computer via USB cables which are included with your order.

As I see, 8-chip board contain PCI-e connector. Can I insert it into PCI-E slot on motherboard without side effects? Is it compatible by power lines with PCI-E?

AFAIK it's not PCI or PCI-e, it's a proprietary connection that can plug into a 4-stack miniplane, which in turn can plug into a double-scroll.

So Thursday is a postal holiday in the US. Just mentioning it since it seems like the US stuff will be hitting bobsag this week at some point...

also, if we paid for express shipping, was that just for express to bobsag or the whole way?

The shipping to bobsag would be in bulk, so he should receive everyones orders in (several) big boxes all at once and then has to break them down into your individual orders to post them. So your express post would be from bobsag to you.

Unless it was for a thumb, then it'd be express directly from Barntech to you.

Technically provided the voltages are the exact same you can run an alternate power source. The primary issue is the amperage. If you actually draw more amps through the new power source than the device can handle (eg, the circuitry and wiring) you can cause the USB hub to overheat, die, and potentially (in worst case) catch fire from the overheating.

The quality of the hub will also likely dictate how high the amperage can go as a low quality hub is likely to use low-end materials and poor quality solder work on the contacts, potentially causing additional issues.

(As an example I bought a couple 7 port hubs only to find that it was actually two hubs cascaded (eg 1 hub connected to another internally) which caused the second hub to fail entirely, as well as poor solder work, incomplete/missing contacts etc. Both of those are now junk as they don't function)

expectation is you'll recieve boards first if  you are in the us.  Probably should get them fast after internal testing. I have a mix of both so I'm in both boats hoping for quick shipping.

Looks like quite a few of you guys got your thumbs already... So...

Are any of you who received your thumbs in the United States?  Trying to gauge when those of us in the USA will get them since I didn't see any tracking info go out. I've been checking my door a few times a day just in case I missed a package drop off. Wink

So I guess I have an excuse to use my underpowered hub to experiment cool my devices. I've been very lucky I haven't killed them yet like my nvidia card. At least since its not rosewill, my cheap hub doesn't need a connection to the pc to turn it on.
Sure, as long as it has its own power supply, it can happily drive your fans...  I use cheap 10 port hubs with alternative power supplies (3 or 4A instead of the 1.5/2A power pack that originally came with them), but never fully populate them to allow both air flow and to be within the supply capacity.

After some testing (set two of them up using the 140mm fan exhaust out of the top of my computer case as active cooling (EDIT: The temp of the air flowing out of the computer and over the devices is 30°C for reference)) and tinkered with one by changing the heatsink (One now has a dedicated AMD S939 heatsink to itself, but you can fit two across so after I get some materials I'll be marrying both to the same heatsink and using usb cables).



Currently running at ext:260:1:950, I couldn't run above 210/42 (EDIT: Actually, I can't run above 42 no matter if I raise the voltage, maybe the specification for 'ext' for Thumbs is exclusive?) without getting hardware errors galore without raising the voltage (which made error rate drop to 0 up to about 240-250MHz), and going any higher than 260 starts introducing errors (about 25%+ error rate on one device, 7% on the other)

Good to see cgminer spit a warning about breaching the 230MHz mark, pity it only shows up for half a second as cgminer loads (eg probably not something most people would notice)

Also to note with the stock heatsink and active cooling the highest temp I was able to get was 48.1°C (and that was at 270:1:950). With the S939 heatsink it's only a little higher than that without a fan blowing on it.

Will post more data after a longer run, then again after I've managed to attach the two of them to the heatsink properly (getting some proper heat pads and such as the original sticky heat pad lost some of its stickyness when I removed the stock heat sink and its currently tightened to the heatsink to keep it there.)

I would really love to know if 950mv is 'acceptable' to run at as I don't want to deliberately cause any electrical damage to the devices by overclocking.
Thanks for this.  I thought that 'ext' required a clock external to the Thumb, but following your post, tried it here too, and it does produce nice results

Produces 4.9/2.9 with low HW rate.

I reached the same conclusion with BE's, so for all of my USB miners the fans are powered from a separate hub which is usually not connected to the PC running the hashing control software.
Now running a mix of BE's, BF, RF (Red Fury) and Drillbit Thumb all on the same old laptop.  The bitfury chip based miners happily share the same hub, some running on bfgminer and the Thumb on cgminer.

Hmm, I was looking up data from the overclocking post on the DrillBit forums and figured I should probably take the word of the poster since they're an Administrator on the forum.

Default value (without --drillbit-options) is apparently int:40:1:850. Unsure on the 'ext' value equivalent.

(They're the ones suggesting cranking to :1:950 and continually testing until you get too many hardware errors or it gets too hot).

page 99 seems to mention 950 as recomended. What do they run without drill bit options or are they required? I have my eroupters running without cooling and they are running at peak.

I tried to run cooling over the eroupters and it seemed to interfere with them (maybe magnetically?) ,so I just leave them as is. I'll have to hope the boards run at a decent temp though I've got a fan ready to try and place when they get here.
