I cant believe someone acutally tied someone for Bitcoin. I cant believe someone murdered someone because of a conflict related to Bitcoin.

Also, he is protecting himself.. why is the court charging him so much?

The judge probably wants all of his bitcoin stash in charges  Cool

Ya, so it was a lot more than just about Bitcoin, drugs and a relationship were probably the main contributors.

As for the hammer, ya it was probably part of a bigger fight. The fact that it came to the guy holding him at gunpoint to sell his bitcoins sounds like they had a lot of fights over money.

Though if they did drugs...I would think they would want to keep their money in bitcoins so they can buy from Silk Road.

Okay then to not get killed and sued for murder instead everyone needs to go out and buy a taser gun or some pepper spray obviously.

Then again your probably a person would advise a woman to get raped as opposed to fighting back, because hey you could get hurt more.  What if the woman being raped picked up a knife after the rapist was done and killed him.  Would you charge her for murder and possession of a weapon?
Yeah, thats voluntary manslaughter if the women kills the dude AFTERWARDS.

"Voluntary manslaughter is commonly defined as an intentional killing in which the offender had no prior intent to kill, such as a killing that occurs in the "heat of passion." The circumstances leading to the killing must be the kind that would cause a reasonable person to become emotionally or mentally disturbed; otherwise, the killing may be charged as a first-degree or second-degree murder. - See more at: http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/voluntary-manslaughter-overview.html#sthash.42ZjdBGr.dpuf "

He was trying to be an extra in the Wolf of Wall Street apparently... Jokes aside there must have been some serious reason for this to have happened.

You guys aren't getting the big picture, self defense in the lovely state of ny, and they want to prosecute him for murder?
Hey you escaped your captors and did what you had to to survive, sorry we are putting you in jail for life.  Next time why don't you just lay down and die.

Doesn't sound like self-defense to me, not even in Redneckistan.

“I grabbed the hammer from the kitchen and hit Jessie three or four times until he was unconscious,”

Dude #1 walks into kitchen, grabs hammer, goes back to the living room and beats dude #2 to death.
It's not like dude #1 pulled the hammer out of his waistband to defend himself.

What are you going to do when someone comes into your home, ties you up and attempts to kill you?  When you escape do you think you are jsut going to waltz out of the apartment?  Do you think the guy will not try to kill you again?  DO you have any idea the fear, adrenaline, and emotions that are running through your head during an incident such as that?

Besides all of that it is an apartment.  Walking into the kitchen could have been the back room, and the guy could have been by the front door prevent his escape, or maybe he didn't want to get chased and shot in the back.

I wonder if the price drops had anything to do with why one of them wanted to liquidate their holdings? the pitfalls of multisig? If you want out you may have to tie your partner up and force him at gun point.....

"A police source told the Daily News Smith and Copobianco  were fighting over drugs, specifically heroin."

So it was the Bitcoin or the heroin that made them go loco?

free market. anger phase. blood on streets.

It was likely in December. His posts ended on Dec. 10th.

From the looks of it, his roomate (Jesse) was on him to give him money for some reason. The dude comes on here to try to get a loan (either to just pay the guy or use it to make money via localbitcoins), nobody gives him the loan so his roomate tells him to sell the 20 coins he does have. Dude says no so Jesse ties him up, puts a gun to his head and forces him to cash it out.

Guy breaks free, bludgeons the guy with a hammer.

Or it could be something else entirely that happened.
