You'd be surprised with how many people still have many of these old electronics laying around. Maybe the newer stuff is worth less, but it would still contain some valuable materials.

In terms of precious metals, the newer stuff indeed contain some of them, but, due to miniaturisation etc, the amounts are almost  microscopical. It's simply not worth the time spent on striping the device and separating relevant components as well as other costs (ie chemicals, protective cloths).

In terms of older devices, whatever their number is, those will eventually disappear, so it's impossible to build sustainable business around it.

What is this about ?

This project aims to reduce waste and contributes to a more effective economy.

The project is called: Urban mining with Credits - we need your VOTE (only a few minutes time investment).

The idea behind the project is that people in a municipality are rewarded with the use of a credits system (alternatively a cryptographic token, but more research is needed) for bringing used electronics to the waste yard (the electronics are weighed and then credits are awarded according to the weight). In fact they become shareholder.

The used electronics can be mined (urban mining) and this generates revenues as those electronics contain valuable materials, this revenue is put back into the system, this way the credits get value.

If this project is the poll winner on impactcity and gets the most votes it is more likely to succeed, you can contribute to that success by casting your vote and (potentially) help the bitcoin ecosystem forward... now. Or even better... first vote and then share or tweet. We can do this together!

What is the incentive for me to do this, why would i vote for your project?

We promise to investigate the use of cryptographic tokens for the credit system and also investigate how we could leverage factom to store timestamped weightings data in the bitcoin blockchain so that we keep a public record of all the weightings and the data becomes 'immutable'.

You can read more about the project here: http://impactcity.nl/innovator/urban-mining-with-credits/, and there you can also VOTE for us. We probably still need around 500 votes to win....

I guess what you want to develop is a token with value that can be given to people who urban mine. Well, IMO that is quite an interesting concept. The best way to develop this should be to build a community and probably to launch a coin to support it or perhaps a token sale... it will all depend on what the business model you are trying to follow!

What kind of valuable materials? I don't think there's a market for used spare parts of old generation electronics and I thought recycling precious metals is only profitable for the really old models of computers/phones (not many of them left).

Anyhow, voted for you.

I also voted btw, hope you can succeed with this, seems like a neat idea!

id look into investigating the whole 'pay per kilo' thing

1. i can get a heavy microwave for $40, where as a phone may have more precious materials and higher priced spare parts (battery, screen) but weigh alot less.
EG it would take 9 phones to equal 1 microwave. but the spare part/scrap value of a phone is not a 9th of a microwave. infact its more like 9 times more..

2. instead of 'pay per kilo' why not pay per gram.. after all crypto currencies are divisible by 8 decimals. so where 1kg=1coin, 1gram can=0.001coin, that way people wont be put off of handing electronics over, as they will get paid per gram, rather than having to have the desire and concentration to hoard all their electronics until they reach the 1kg milestone

3. scrap metal industry. if people can find a way to be paid 'cash in hand' whether its banknotes or cryptocurrencies.. instead of traceable wire transfers.. they would abuse it. eg: in the uk they use to allow cash in hand trades for scrap. and people use to remove copper from church roofs, copper piping from sides of houses. even telephone cabling and other metals they can rip off of buildings they dont own.

@~Bitcoin~

If i understand correctly:

You say this:
or to pay to the family who give you guys their waste

--> that is exactly our concept ! people who bring electronic waste will be payed out in credits, so they will be shareholder in the 'local circular economy'

With other point you are right, we will anyway research this, but if you all vote for us, the chances are higher of success.

I will refine the text a bit.

Not only if you win on poll but i think you should start investing on using cryptocurrency for incentive or to pay to the family who give you guys their waste. In this way people will more be interested in use of cryptocurrency.
