After some time I updated the merit animation race, as requested by Igebotz

https://public.flourish.studio/story/520945/
Nice work man but why it's still stops at 30/12/2022. First I checked the animation from the OP, thought it's outdated then checked the above one and thought this one will have updated data but it seems the same except the cosmetics.

Looking forward to the next one with data from until may be last week or last month.
Thank you for noticing.

I uploaded the data but forgot to publish it. It is working now!

Aw man. After entering the race in Sept 2019, I finished in last place. Guess I need to start caring about merits.

Funny how satoshi comes and goes from the top 20 like he's still actively posting. Satoshi is a pretty good demarcator for being "great at merits."

it was all downhill for me starting in 2020.  I think that might have been when I started posting a lot less than I used to
Your earned Merit amount went up again more recently:

(my graph has no axis, but it starts at the beginning of the Merit system, and it's only meant to give a quick impression)

but whatever the reason everyone started blowing me away in the beginning of that year.
Merit got more abundant, while the number of posts decreased. So more Merit per post, so if you post less, you lose the race.

Also I think you need to update The Pharmacist name on that chart
Yeah, but it might be kind of confusing if someone is trying to verify the info (though I've no idea why someone would do that) and my old moniker isn't there.

And damn, it was all downhill for me starting in 2020.  I think that might have been when I started posting a lot less than I used to, but whatever the reason everyone started blowing me away in the beginning of that year.

Thanks for keeping this updated, OP.  I remember seeing it when the thread was started, but I don't think I've seen it since.

I just updated the Merit Races for both senders and receivers.

It is impressive to see o_e_l_e_o in the first spot of merit receivers with more than 13k merits. Congrats!

Great work bitmover, I check the animated chart for Merit Senders but it stopped at 2020-10-23. Probably that’s the last time you updated it. I was trying to see the ranking of Filippone, DdmrDdmr and The Sceptical Chymist there, after the massive merits they shared last year.
Also I think you need to update The Pharmacist name on that chart

Good for him--I think I've given him a few merits here and there, and I'm glad he's distributing his sMerits generously.  It's not good when someone earns tons of merit but hoards them.

I can't believe I'm still in the list.  After my last post in this thread I was pretty sure I was going to drop out of it relatively soon--not that I'm disappointed, mind you, just surprised.  I think I'll do what I should have done when this thread was started:  bookmark it.

since everything here goes over Cloudflare, you can easily enable SSL certificate there (your hosting have also free SSL which you can use), just in a few clicks. Then you can always use https.
So, your website https://bitcoindata.science
Thanks.
SLL was already enabled
one of the first things I did when I opened cloudflare was to enable HTTPS.
It is more professional to use https... I use HTTPS EVERYWHERE add on, so it was quite annoying for me when it was not enabled and I couldn't use https there

UPDATE: Earned and sent merit are now in the same page. just click the arrow to see merit senders.
I also updated with the most recent data, from 14th August, and added it to my domain: bitcoindata.science

One little bit off-topic digression here. You need to add Http:// or https:// in front of your website domain, then it will be clickable. so much easier especially for mobile device users to visit your page.
domain .science is not top-level, for many people, it is not clear that it is a website.

That is a very cool animation, OP.  I had my eye on Jet Cash's performance and it kind of got me wondering where's he's gone to.  He used to be extremely active here and was doing a lot of work to help newbies and such.

Anyway, I'm surprised I'm still on that chart.  My merit-earning has dropped off a cliff in the past year or so--and that's fine by me, since it's not like I can rank up any more.  And my sMerit supply as a merit source keeps getting replenished so fast that I haven't had to dip into my earned sMerits in a long time....but yeah, thanks for that little bit of entertainment, OP.

But I am curious where some previous top ones on the list right now.
I am too.  It doesn't surprise me, since members come and go as their interest in either bitcoin or the forum waxes and wanes, and it's been 2.5 years since the merit system was rolled out.  That's a pretty long time when you're talking about participation on a discussion forum.

Those two sources have different results, so it's worth saying that bpip includes airdropped merit while the forum's merit stats show only earned merit.

Is there a place that I can see the list of all the member names on the animation? It is much better if the names are clickable and directly go to their profiles.

You can follow LoyceV advice or just write "username bitcointalk" in google search that you can find all those user profiles.

I liked your idea to make a link to each user profile in the animation. I will take a look at your suggestion in the incoming week.

If I remember correctly, @LoyceV used to give data to a guy who was planning to create similar charts before. It's been a long time and I haven't seen any such posts until today, when it was done by bitmover, did I miss that guy's post? I think not  Cheesy bitmover has a nice chart with pretty iron color  Cheesy The chart also shows that the top 19 and 20 are at high risk of being changed in a short time, the difference is very low.
Can someone make this chart a light gif? It would be great to see it move  Cheesy

Are both be possible? AFAIK LoyceV has data on it
I don't have up-to-date data on Ranks, but that's easy to get. It takes less than a day to scrape for all users who had any Merit transactions.
But the next problem is their rank now might be different than their rank when they received Merit. Users grow through the ranks as they earn Merit.

Maybe the way to animate those data is to simply let the top 10 (or 20) race until they reach their maximum merit before going to another rank and the video would simply stop among the top users that reached the upper rank first. You think this would be possible? The animation was simply amazing and useful as for future infographic reference and animating more possible data would be awesome.

The range between @LoyceV's and @Thermos is quite alarming, it's like @LoyceV's is likely to over throne thermos on Merits. Lets keep observation on. But I probably believe Thermos wont want that to happen 😀😀🤸

Theymos didn't really care about merit as we was busy in the development of epochtalk and enhancement of this forum. And he doesn't really onto facing the community and its users, but rather letting other users such as LoyceV to spread good quality posts and helpful information.

Something is wrong with this data, specially in the last 5 weeks or so. It is different from http://loyce.club/trust/DT1-strength.txt

I made the animation, but the data was inconsistent (only 3-4 DT 1 in the last week), so I will be doing another one with this file.
I am sorry for the incorrect stats. For my analysis, the bug does not affect my statistical results but for yours, it does affect.

I have to replace ,, to ,., with dot represents a missing value. Then everything is fine. You can check the sheet again.

@OP here are some of my suggestions/requests about the data hoping to find a different view in the merits

    - Merit Race in Local Boards - Like what was previously said some members in BCT mostly post in their local boards it will be interesting to see who is winning.

To do that I will need to do this first, as I don't knowc from which board the merit came from with my current data.

I believe it would be nice to make a board race of circulating merits. I don't have that data now, as I don't know exactly how to convert forum posts to boards.
You can't convert this without downloading all posts. I think DdmrDdmr has that data available on his Merit Dashboard.

It looks more complicated compared to what I have imagined it to be but the nice thing about DdmrDdmr's merit dash board is you can filter out merits sent from local sections. But will you have a problem on implementing the data from there to your Merit animation? Because I think this will be challenging and time consuming to you especially when you do it by local board of a country.

    Something like this: https://drive.google.com/file/d/172ThmUgimSmwispeeZIilvKJ4S9HF6Ca/view?usp=sharing

The link points to a CSV delimited file with some of the fields that are useful to enhance the sMerit TX data, amongst them being the section/subsection.

Note that deleted posts and/or moved posts may render the information not 100% accurate (i.e. a post is merited in the Beginners and Help board, merited, but later moved to Bitcoin Discussion after a while). Every now and then I do reparse all merited posts to avoid this possibility, but I haven’t done it now for some time. Regardless, the associates section/subsection should be 99% correct I figure. Ranks included are current rank, not  rank at the time of the sMerit TX.

The header contains the field names, which should be easy to follow.

Edit: I forgot to open the above shared link to all publicly. It should be open access now.

    - Top Merits received by post - although the results will be similar to what you have now this will give a different view on how much merits the members are receiving on each post
    - Top Reciprocal Merit Senders

Interesting, Killyou72 got his name changed long ago but appeard in the list here
I think bitmover used my list of usernames, and I didn't update this user yet. I'll update it at my next update (Friday).

    That's exactly the reason.

Did you know mediaBuzz did something similar 3 months ago?
Why didn't you start from day 1 of the Merit system?

I made a version that went from day to day, since day 1. However, there were 2 reasons which made me decide to make this animation based on the last day of the month merit status:
1 - the dataframe became too heavy, and it was really hard to upload the data into the animation website.
2 -  on day 1 we already had more than a thousand merits distributed, so there was no visible difference. Even in the beginning of the animation, as day 1 of merit system was a very unusual day. The first data in the animation is on 31/01/18, which is basically the same as the first day (i think first day was 28/01)

    Here are my suggestions:
    • Maybe you should also try animating the merit receivers from different ranks as well (i.e. Merited Member - Legendary Members)
But the next problem is their rank now might be different than their rank when they received Merit. Users grow through the ranks as they earn Merit.
I agree, this is a problem as well. As everyone would be legendary or Hero, even though they were newbie in the beginning. Maybe I could do some algorithm to make that change over time... but too much trouble I guess.

Really interesting to see a few people close to the top in 2018 that I've never even heard of.

Local boards plays a big role here. Even now, I can see many users who post basically in their local boards.[/list]

It’s certainly a faster race to watch than the ones I created on the Merit Dashboard (Merit Race – updated weekly with selectable Usernames; Top 100 snail paced Merit Race as of March 2020).

<…> It was also funny to watch DdmrDdmr pull ahead of LoyceV for a few brief moments, and then Loyce was like, nope, and sped ahead like there was no tomorrow.<…>

Other than that: nice animation Cheesy It's good to see "my" data being used. It's kinda bad though that certain Merit data can't be verified on the forum anymore: 120 days after a Merited post was deleted, you have to rely on unverifiable user data.

Every time I get closer to theymos, he does something like an art contest, and he's 6 months further ahead again Tongue

    Here are my suggestions:
    • Maybe you should also try animating the merit receivers from different ranks as well (i.e. Merited Member - Legendary Members)
    • Merit senders depending by the ranks as well
Are both be possible? AFAIK LoyceV has data on it
I don't have up-to-date data on Ranks, but that's easy to get. It takes less than a day to scrape for all users who had any Merit transactions.
But the next problem is their rank now might be different than their rank when they received Merit. Users grow through the ranks as they earn Merit.

You put up a good fight satoshi, but you've been bested. Take that, guy who hasn't logged in to the forum since 2010.

Funny I didn't even show up until 8/19.

It was also funny to watch DdmrDdmr pull ahead of LoyceV for a few brief moments, and then Loyce was like, nope, and sped ahead like there was no tomorrow.

I remember in 2018 and maybe early 2019 seeing people with a lot more merits than me who never even appeared in this list, thinking, "It will be a big day when I catch up to them."

Thanks for the animation! Soon, someone will use this as their basis in showing graphs about important data here in the forum.

    Here are my suggestions:
    • Maybe you should also try animating the merit receivers from different ranks as well (i.e. Merited Member - Legendary Members)
    • Merit senders depending by the ranks as well

Are both be possible? AFAIK LoyceV has data on it but the challenge is how could you get everything in chronological order since the merit started. Also, maybe you should just simply make a single thread about those animations or just combine it here and edit the title as "Bitcointalk Data Animation" that would contain all of your works because the ideas are the same.

I was trying to convert the video onto GIF yet can we upload gifs in here? I have cropped the video and the only problem is how can it be played here.

No God or Kings, only BITCOIN.
To make custom animations I just need to select the requested data from the full merit history dataframe I made. I did in Jupyter Notebook. I just made a merit senders animation, which I will post now Wink
My bad it was Jupyter notebook, not Anaconda that's the whole package. That will be awesome don't forget the speed as well so we can see more clearer picture of the race. LOL!  Cheesy

I thought there will be a way to let the speed a little bit slower but I think it doesn't matter.

Thanks for your suggestion, I just slowed it down.

Do you still have to code the data for example on Anaconda or is it just drag and drop or something like that?

Are you also considering to create different animations per request like Re: LoyceV vs theymos (and get your own Merit graph: up to 20 users per graph)? for selected users?
Would be nice but I guess it's too much work...

I can do that. It is not too much work. 99% of the work was to organize the data. Now that it is organized I can make as many animations as requested pretty easily.

    UPDATED 2022-12-30

Earned and sent merit are now in the same page. just click the arrow to see merit senders.

I am studying python and I managed to do something with @LoyceV's merit data and this nice website called Flourish Studio.

I cannot post videos here, so here is the image. Click in the image to see the animation:

Alternatively, you can click here for the animation.
    https://www.bitcoindata.science/meritrace.html

I will make Merit Senders race soon Done and merged with this one.
