If you encrypt your wallet in a secured environment, it should be safe to use in for reading balances in bitcoind run on a less secured server.
But sooner or later you will run into problems when your address pool goes down - unless you will be updating regularly, each time you need new addresses.

If you don't want to use 3rd party s/w, I think you could try to run bitcoind at a secured system of your choice (i.e. your home PC) and setup the web app to connect to it, using ssh tunneling or something like that. Then at least you know that nobody from the data center has an access to your wallet file.

Hello All

I would like to start a thread for us "simple web developers" on how to integrate and verify transactions made in bitcoins.
I love bitcoin and really would like to see them much more widely adopted, but i have to admit that i am shocked at the difficulties in integrating with conventional eCommerce sites.
For wider adoption i think it is crucial that simple verification is made "simple".

Where i am at:

I have tried to use bitcoind running on my web server in order to integrate payment verification. However for security i did not want to store my "shiny bitcoins" in the web servers bitcoind client.
However i did want to receive details on address balances via the RPC method, but find i can only do this for addresses within the same wallet. (i intended to send the bitcoins to an off-line wallet).

After posting a few questions on other forums, and stating my unwillingness to use 3rd party sites like blockchain's API. i was criticized for not wanting to use 3rd parties. I eventually gave in and decided (as others were telling me to stop worrying) to use the JSON API from blockchain (which i agree was nice and simplish).
However today i sit down to do further work and notice that the BlockChain API is returning errors.................
If after only a few days, they are issuing error message NO ecommerce site can rely on this..... (i thank blockchain for giving us this, but.....).

I know there are other 3rd party sites that offer to accept bitcoin for a fee, but if this is the case of a 1% fee needs to be paid, i can use conventional (and horrible) centralised credit cards to do this.....

Conclusion:

I wonder if it is possible to have a thread here, aimed at helping us simple web developers understand how we can integrate with bitcoin and what our options are.
I think something like this would be of great benefit to Bitcoin.

Im sorry if i sound confused (i however AM), but i feel many other "simple web developers" will also be in my position.
If i find any good solutions i will be happy to post them here along with sample code; And i think if others do the same a good resource may develop and help the Bitcoin community develop futher.

Best Regards
Ford Kia
