No, this is not true. Electrum isn't safe. Sorry.

First btc i buy in 2011, so if i have same app, ga, 2fa, usb-backup's, knowledge, experience and i lost my coins yesterday just like that from original electrum - something is wrong. And its gone, i have diversification and money managament, but i cant trade now.

Someone steal low ammount this is paranoid. I read now about it, many people just hacked.

I think we all feel bad for your loss but there must be a reason it happened yesterday and not at all in the past 8 years you've used it. Someone has access. Someone got into your device somehow and found your private keys. Assume the worst, I don't think this is a client especially if you've not access in a time.

Where are the other reports of people getting hacked by the way?

Electrum wallet is safe to use and so far I have not encountered any issues with it, what version are you using if it’s the old version update it to the latest version. The possible reason for your loss is malware in your system, or you have used unsecured connection while operating your wallet check and fix it. I think he’s referring to the hack we witnessed few months back, when people had updated their wallet without going to the official site.

There have been a few, but all these problems were caused by people being too careless. It definitely sucks for people to lose money like this, but come on, common sense is something people clearly lack.

I would have expected that people would take their security and internet etiquette more serious now they own crypto, but it really seems that people still consider it to be a fun thing or whatever.

OGs use Electrum too, but none of them fell for phising attacks and other attempts to gain access to their coins. Probably a sign that crypto by a long shot isn't user friendly enough for most average people....

the internet is filled with these fake websites spreading malware around to steal other people's bitcoins. it is becoming a common way of scamming.
If I am not mistaken this is one of the reasons why Google banned cryptocurrency related advertisements on their platform because all these fake websites used their ad network to spread. for example when you googled Electrum, these fake websites came up on top in form of ads and people clicked those instead of the real one and lost their bitcoins.

Sadly that is truth and it won't change in the near future at all. The question we can be asking ourselves is, how can we stop scammers without compromising the up-time of legitimate crypto projects? - I believe that can be solved with Blockchain pretty easily.

The most important thing is making sure to identify which traits make a scam evident in the vast majority of cases and then and only then a filter could be made probably implemented in the main hosting companies, eventually could be in all. The solution is pretty simple.

Also if hosting the page of a project inside another bigger website could be like Twitter or any social network then they can make sure to implement those pattern filters and shut down the scam sites. Of course it wouldn't be perfect but it would be a start.

Then open a damn topic and don't bump a year old one.

Maybe because this news is from April 2018, same as this thread. It would be nice that people start reading before posting about some long time ago resolved things.

This is why we should lock topics that refer to a particular event if a month or so has passed.

I was just about to send a tx and waiting for the invoice I was browsing the forum, saw the title in the updated list I instantly closed my client, thought another bug was found.
Damn necroposting, almost gave me a heart attack.

Seems like the link would redirect to electrum.org now. I think someone has done his part on wiping up the mess. I can't find the malware either with the keyword 'Electrum Pro'. Probably things are settled now. Glad to see the official Twitter of Electrum itself sending us the warning - giving the precaution to people. Well, the community is way better than those bad guys had anticipated.

~snip~

You posted in Electrum board, there is no need to post in any other thread where Electrum is mentioned., This will not solve your problem, an your coins are gone because you did not know that you should update Electrum only from official site. Hackers exploit vulnerability in Electrum and this is something what should not have happened, but if you want to be your own bank you need to pay more attention to safety.

Electrum is 100% open source and you can not only see everything the wallet does but also you can compile it yourself easily. so if you lost money it is not because Electrum wasn't safe, it is because you were using it safely. and also that means you will have the same exact problem with any other wallet that you use.

If you're using the old version of electrum you could lose your coins afaik. It's still safe to use electrum if it's always updated, getting hacked mostly depends on what the owner of the wallet is doing, sure there's 2fa but it's not stopping hackers from getting in our wallets as others have been hacked with 2fa enabled.

Feel sorry for you loss, but personally, I haven't lost any money using my Electrum. Did you know that they have a recent released? https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/electrum-337-release-5161539. I guess you and like the rest of everyone here who uses this lightweight software really needs to be careful, specially as it is one of the most targeted wallet app by hackers/criminals this year alone.

I understand how you feel after losing funds, but the client itself is safe enough to use. I am using it almost on a daily basis in combination with a serious $$ amount, and never faced a single problem. If I for a single moment thought Electrum was not safe to use, I would immediately stop using it.

Did you by accident click on a notification that popped up? Perhaps you clicked it without even realizing. Perhaps it's your system that contains a virus or whatever.

Electrum's website is https://electrum.org . We do not own electrum dot com, and "Electrum Pro" is very likely bitcoin stealing malware. Please use http://bitcoin.org  for a list of Bitcoin wallet websites.

Please spread the news as quickly as you can. Thanks everyone.

People should never ever google critical sites like this, instead they should always visit it from bookmarks. Also, signature verification every time you install a wallet would defeat any of these malicious wallet attacks, because there's almost no chances that scammers would compromise developer's key.

That and the ICO scams, cloud mining scams, fake exchanges, doublers, hyips and other ponzi schemes - overall way too much scams, fraud and phishing in crypto sphere, and sooner or later people would start blaming Google for enabling it. But they have relaxed it already, and people have been reporting seeing crypto-related ads on Youtube.

I know that there is a good chance that a spam network is operating in the forum. I also know that you cannot be stopped but please, help spread the news as a public service for the sake of the community. This is your time to do some good.
It is a common thing nowadays especially when money is involved, there are people that will always takes advantage to those people that didn't have enough knowledge on how they will get rid of being scammed or get phished. We have seen a lot of this on every cryptocurrency exchanges/services and copying the user interface to scam people, this is the same thing with this one. But what's funny is that the staff or someone working for this electrum pro had posted a comment on this tweet and said that it is a fork of electrum to improve the user experience lol, if it is a fork of electrum and not a scam, why do they have to use the same name for its domain name? why not use electrumpro instead. Anyway thanks for this information.

I thought there was a domain hijack that happened, people have to be careful when dealing with cryptocurrency as you never know when you are going to fall victim for the scam and phishing sites that are operating to steal your funds, actually these domains must be forcefully taken over, MPAA used to do that and there must be a legal option to take over the domains to protect users.

Site spoofing is a very common method, used by these people to exploit people. Have they identified any malware on the site or are they just confusing people to direct them to the wrong domain?

The best thing we can do is to report it to major AV sites and also sites like :

https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_badware/

www.badbitcoin.org/

They will red flag the threat and notify people before they visit the site. Do the same for other browsers on their support pages.
