I own some EOS ... I keep reading about "registering" it, though.  What's the deal with that?  Is registration mandatory?  What purpose does that serve?

In order to claim EOS tokens on the EOS network you need to map an EOS key to your ethereum wallet that is storing the ERC20 tokens. The purpose is to facilitate a 1:1 distribution of actual EOS tokens to existing ERC-20 EOS tokens. In other words, it's the process that proves that you are entitled to an actual EOS token based on your ownership of the current tokens.

There's a great how-to in this Steemit article.

this too explain well

its important because now, all you have is an ER20 token on the Ethereum blockchain.

the eos blockchain is not yet live

so, you need to "register" or "map" your ER20 token addresss, so that, when the EOS blockchain goes live , you get an equivalent amount of EOS tokens on  the new blockchain

think of it this way

right now you have a receipt of purchase, but you need to submit it to collect

submission is registering before July 2018

Sorry, but Ethereum is not going anywhere. As far as I know it is being developed by Microsoft. And it is used by hundreds of companies for their platforms. No way this altcoin will kill it.

Your title is too exaggerated, maybe EOS will not be as easy as possible to kill ETH, I have not seen the name of EOS in big market, so do not be too quick to conclude that ETH will die

A simple word to reflect the relationship between ethereum and eos is really simple, There was no ethereum project and there will be no smartcontract has been deployed, There is no ethereum and there will be no eos project.
There is no eos project and the ethereum and smartcontract will always be there. I just see the eos project as another copycat that claimed to make a big upgradable to the smartcontract.  Roll Eyes

INSIDER: THE EOS CONTROVERSY, STEEMIT & A WORLD OF CRYPTO

In this out of the ordinary interview I speak with Justin, who is known on Steemit as "Official Fuzzy", he's the co-founder of Bitshares, he also happens to know Dan Larimer, the founder of Steemit and Bitshares, very well. Justin addresses some of the questions and "red flags" about the EOS offering. We also discuss the good - and bad sides of Steemit, and cryptos in general. Crypto and blockchain technology offers humanity a duality: The possibility of total freedom, or total enslavement.

EOS may or may not be the Ethereum killer but what is clear is that if you want to make real money then EOS is not the place with it's super high market cap.

I would like to know where I can buy a little EOS but is it very expensive? I just thought maybe if I purchase a few and forget about them for a year it might be worth something. Do you now the best exchange to find EOS?
I'm still in learning phase(trying to learn how to learn actually) but as far as i see, it's way cheaper than when it hit market cap. Am i missing something?
