As long as you don't think it's a large risk of an error happening that could jeopardize the larger amount of bitcoins saved already.

I think we'll be ok. You've done a good job of following instructions without trying to modify anything I say in such a way to result in a loss of bitcoins.  I've tried pretty hard not to provide you with anything that you could easily mess up in a way that could result in a loss of bitcoins.

I'll put another transaction together for you to sweep more dust later this afternoon.  I have some obligations I have to attend to for the next 10 hours or so.

If you could help me the long way to save money, I'll take the help.  As long as you don't think it's a large risk of an error happening that could jeopardize the larger amount of bitcoins saved already.

Is there an easier way that has a fee?

Yes, but if the transaction is larger than 10 kilobytes or the inputs haven't been sitting around unspent for long enough to result in a priority of 57,600,000 or higher, then you'll need to pay a fee of at least 0.0001 BTC per kilobyte just to get the nodes that are connected to you to relay the transaction to any miners to get confirmed (and if the fee is less than 0.0005 BTC per kilobyte, then many miners may still not confirm it for a day or two).  Most of these transactions we are creating are between 7 and 10 kilobytes and sweeping about 50 inputs. If we assume about 8 kilobytes per 50 inputs on average, it will require about 0.03 BTC in fees at 0.0001 per kilobyte or 0.15 BTC in fees at 0.0005 per kilobyte to sweep up all the 0.3072837 remaining bitcoins in your wallet.  If you're willing to pay 10% to 30% of the remaining inputs as fees, we can probably sweep up all the dust with 3 or 4 transactions.

If you want to do that, let me know.

If you prefer not to be forced to pay unnecessary fees just because some bitcoin providing service couldn't be bothered to make their payments in increments larger than 0.0002 BTC, then we can use a 20 BTC output that I've got sitting around unused at the moment to sweep more dust for you while we wait for your most recent transaction to build up some priority. Just let me know which way you prefer to go.

Either way, once we've got the wallet cleaned up, I'd suggest that every 50 or so transactions that you receive (especially if you are still using sites like bitvisitor or cointube) you send the entire balance of your wallet to an address in your wallet.  This way you won't build up a large supply of these tiny outputs over time.

I have to run some errands.  I may not be back to post any next steps until late tonight.

After each sweep, you'll have to wait about a day-and-a-half for the newly created output to build up enough priority to be used to sweep up dust without needing a fee.  You can sweep up about 50 or 60 outputs with each transaction, so we are going to have to repeat this processes of creating a raw transaction and then waiting for priority to build up about 30 times or so until all the tiny transactions are gone.  In the meantime, if you need/want to send bitcoins somewhere, we can either temporarily send them to a wallet downstairs for you to use, or we can do it with a raw transaction.

I have a 20 bitcoin output that I'm not using for anything else right now.  I can create a transaction that uses my 20 bitcoins to sweep your outputs into your wallet for you.  That way we can get 2 transactions sent per day.  With a bit of coordination, we can have your wallet completely cleaned up in about 15 days.

Here is the breakdown of the remaining unspent outputs in your wallet.  We'll sweep them in this order, so that we reduce the total number of addresses that the outputs are split between.

  • Address 1Ka... (20 unspent outputs)
  • Address 1Jb... (103) unspent outputs)
  • Address 1HB... (166 unspent outputs)
  • Address 1Nj... (308 unspent outputs)
  • Address 1EE... (542 unspent outputs)
  • Address 1LJ... (628 unspent outputs)

Wow.  Whatever works.  Is there an easier way that has a fee? The above is done.  You've been a lot of help thanks.

Ok, it's done and it worked   Grin

I have that amount in the upstairs bitcoin-qt wallet.

Great, so we're making progress.

Transaction da633d05357f5d4eb883abc3b8e2381330427765a951dc6d984b639248ecfad9 should have built up enough priority to send the sweep by now.

We can therefore create a raw transaction that will sweep all the bitcoins from the addresses that start with:

  • 1DV...
  • 1CU...
  • 1Dr...
  • 1PG...
  • 14m...

To do that we'll use the following createrawtransaction command in the Console of the wallet upstairs:

Code:
createrawtransaction [{\"txid\":\"da633d05357f5d4eb883abc3b8e2381330427765a951dc6d984b639248ecfad9\",\"vout\":0},{\"txid\":\"10b160f57e292e9170fe4d2e0616d1b94f81e7f931db72d03f4589b4f59d9b19\",\"vout\":493},{\"txid\":\"0ee7c792bf869c53ea5dac76540023e95a303f203e18d35733cb8cbb8a6c5623\",\"vout\":18},{\"txid\":\"e8522d6971af2bfed8a2b939dbcb594e2aea16df1e204ecfa4ce86f7b2f55111\",\"vout\":0},{\"txid\":\"10b160f57e292e9170fe4d2e0616d1b94f81e7f931db72d03f4589b4f59d9b19\",\"vout\":504},{\"txid\":\"457388662baf8cab31e02f962fcc0336caabefbaffcdce5af43606f2e83c5379\",\"vout\":11},{\"txid\":\"cb37bf478ba63bb640584035b1eb337413dfbc0ee6888d61bf15f38ae0b0dfea\",\"vout\":25},{\"txid\":\"10b160f57e292e9170fe4d2e0616d1b94f81e7f931db72d03f4589b4f59d9b19\",\"vout\":940},{\"txid\":\"24ee838c252c39b131f33202874b379e363e0d4e0d620581959a711dfaa84f05\",\"vout\":65},{\"txid\":\"2ce912fd4ce2438ff899c1d55cbc2c2653a86cf8ac1be08a3d38d153618a7cfe\",\"vout\":228},{\"txid\":\"6ba575caa3a6d41b0f056b68a8f91020210557c6a2b7124093ece3564583c133\",\"vout\":257},{\"txid\":\"a1e615c3a6a5a74861f39d8964e7c674b4b56ac75817538ebb54f112bdcaa97b\",\"vout\":21},{\"txid\":\"b03fb7a36967205e00adeb2fafba4820a9424ea00f16ebac6396adcd75b910ee\",\"vout\":9},{\"txid\":\"cc21abbd48858fd18948e8348c4c8913f10acaa3aa4e983a1eff8ef2de5dd3af\",\"vout\":59},{\"txid\":\"3283d629aa0fcbd4f588d6c1efb42c0612eb792d529ec76125c1bf4f2e11433c\",\"vout\":16},{\"txid\":\"500485c2cf1787df5a17a5000166ac1c6b30f8b73410d3236fd3da753dc50514\",\"vout\":6},{\"txid\":\"db78eb37ba756664c9c65f387b92f53c1a720c26344b1e9c957da6802e51a21f\",\"vout\":48},{\"txid\":\"2eef7fd0041ccbaa7f93d7ec6c977f14b01c9ec88bf2298a6e23cc1a181763fe\",\"vout\":43},{\"txid\":\"ccd85c183abc37df55d3ce080d5f8348535beb2a28bd9db305f43269eacfc539\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"45ffccc383ca3f71f16f9917b0b2db45f9c25ffbcbaf89b83716edf43a92d961\",\"vout\":58},{\"txid\":\"57543f1b534f99f7b23458652cc167b397a1e57a968547233ceb34da63914840\",\"vout\":58},{\"txid\":\"a17064f25f9e189d0847967abe6707a70773010c32b400346bf5187200cae979\",\"vout\":69},{\"txid\":\"dea517477a2eab43d4ef61d2c1f27596e260995cb052ea1d35a6afc026c666ce\",\"vout\":66},{\"txid\":\"bc9c188f94663a02ee3ebd5f0f5e8b7c88e5253bbd60b394b3ae5d04d8d46ded\",\"vout\":56},{\"txid\":\"dcb2fdfd00a6a3b5dbf9445b58cd2eba32512bdcbdf5f000bab9a16fe820ced7\",\"vout\":16},{\"txid\":\"b1bd4962298138de9bfe94d143eff70a134d6b9faaf7cfbdf2eced126efb6242\",\"vout\":12},{\"txid\":\"8b6c2f2545758c86443738e32306c57b260d69d93461959cdca6427db8182e01\",\"vout\":13},{\"txid\":\"8f1ed00577a868f7138d77b0af935534843891eda7122079cc737d123fe78117\",\"vout\":30},{\"txid\":\"0bf2929e1ac8044180a99c801e65356bd1fae7d27da727e0c58803a6f33cf806\",\"vout\":32},{\"txid\":\"258f325a0a969084c24e9be875bad48f9effbde3c221a9c42ba738295b419ebc\",\"vout\":56},{\"txid\":\"8ff6047552cd74e633388abf6f5ad5430bb26b18ca67f07eb5464385f2d8049f\",\"vout\":55},{\"txid\":\"9065865c3f83eae315a5872ccc3a2f23248865af64cdc3893ff0446fd419bfbe\",\"vout\":46},{\"txid\":\"328f6db9a8f18d87eed0e65dde5a338f14d8da742df18a8550e5282b19404eb4\",\"vout\":39},{\"txid\":\"c4ce9bc7c2970729ee2c30ec9515e795e6df221aa5f0c54b759c5be0cac9bb73\",\"vout\":13},{\"txid\":\"7bf265f585007ea441c3b9e0ffdd2d0830d29ff3d3bc038a4bdc62db6d7ac49e\",\"vout\":111},{\"txid\":\"b608f3e9aa441813d1986aff0f9c3c2ccfb39987f56ee7b7e5a56c719489e41a\",\"vout\":47},{\"txid\":\"38b3d9605f77f6c0c75f38d88bc7a37cc58d6cf759a5f33681f78f14a0bc1d8f\",\"vout\":48},{\"txid\":\"708a264c1f8dcad78171776cd255880d8ae189293dcdb0139b780175c44e2847\",\"vout\":48},{\"txid\":\"5fc44385008f460ff4e9c6873f6454f616840445ef8668528e76be543c5c4d2c\",\"vout\":35},{\"txid\":\"11f35f5c2ea28252c8d65cc145eb348b5d04db24ec4fe635b8dc509a3c63f128\",\"vout\":51},{\"txid\":\"a884fde6773eadf083489df4275f99929aa284e26f1f8068724b70619a344561\",\"vout\":48},{\"txid\":\"f7c81685d20f699f2e03b65334664b627f5bd68b3c93df0d82b697a0f88623f7\",\"vout\":55},{\"txid\":\"1b177c7154d1123d4011b62ebad7c3c45549a320dd8fa0581a7d95fd5f714d79\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"2b98e7b7619649491d4947ffdd1cfd217ab88e0e258d1a8d040365fa817a69ec\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"4a2d4b28d21b5d1dab142be7b49d2374b2c54ccdf04d4f46ceeef03247e6fb54\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"7c93a523fe998c2c60d55ed7327b9ba82d23481114b3e8230f6dcbbec1a22951\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"818f4c9f7076265b5838925eba6f5437056a5c055d3cbef273a3ccfd969c738f\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"89503e563844033379de2b849540f031cb0204607e321de7a4cf46bc068542ab\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"c2e7aec413c9cd5788347d88cc07d0ff9aa411751e0da6b5b73ac2c6c7e803ba\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"df7aa9f16797388f7fe1210088290c8d4f77e5242b9e39ebd645024a2467a7ba\",\"vout\":42},{\"txid\":\"9918c27d47f63c73b757346de90c6632cff1fadba0a501563952b1b5017505a4\",\"vout\":41},{\"txid\":\"a60018752d73c0072223b9b471ea592209dfbddaf696fe2ce737c219f0557a9e\",\"vout\":41}] {\"1EEq1NjWtnwoqANZZX2JLCCUY46wFgvfZ8\":22.89587645}

Then you can unlock the wallet upstairs with:

Code:
walletpassphrase yourWalletPassPhraseHere 600
(replace yourWalletPassPhraseHere with the actual passphrase for that wallet)

and sign the transaction with the signrawtransaction command.  If you trust me not to be stealing your bitcoins, you can skip the createrawtransaction step and just use the signrawtransaction command I've built for you here:

Code:
signrawtransaction 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

and finally you can run sendrawtransaction with the appropriate output from the signrawtransaction command.

Let me know when all that is done, and we'll move on to the next steps.

sorry about the wait, my end of the week was very busy and I needed to make sure I had brain power before I did this.

No worries.  I figured you'd be back when you had some time.

How many addresses are listed in the "Receive Coins" section on the old wallet upstairs?

11

How many of those addresses are you willing to abandon (assuming we are only abandoning the address itself and not the coins that were sent to the address) since you no longer intend to use those addresses to receive coins in the future?

I don't care about any of them.

We'll have to figure out which addresses to move to the new wallet, and then we'll have to figure out if we need to continue sweeping up what's left of the tiny outputs from any addresses that we aren't going to move.

awesome.  sorry, i've been really busy today.

No problem. I had gone to bed by the time you posted last night.  In the meantime, I put together a script that will make it faster/easier to parse the output from listunspent and create a raw transaction.

In analyzing the listunspent output, I see that a few of the addresses have only been used a few times each.  The next createrawtransaction that I send you will sweep up all the dust in the old wallet upstairs at the 5 addresses that have the fewest outputs.  That would be the dust at the addresses that start with the following:

  • 1DV...
  • 1CU...
  • 1Dr...
  • 1PG...
  • 14m...

Once that's done, we can import the remaining 6 addresses into the new wallet downstairs.

We need to use the one large 22.89164418 BTC output to sweep up the dust outputs.  Unfortunately at the moment the large output is in on the wallet downstairs at address 194kMYZoK9EyNHvSTHWhxqfER1Radjawdr, and the dust outputs are in a different wallet upstairs.  Therefore, lets start by importing the large output into the wallet upstairs.  We don't want to create a transaction that will send the 22.89164418 BTC to the wallet upstairs, because then it will lose all the priority it has built up by aging for the past 23 hours.  Instead, we'll write down the private key of the 194kMYZoK9EyNHvSTHWhxqfER1Radjawdr address from the wallet downstairs and then import that private key into the wallet upstairs.

If you've encrypted the wallet downstairs then in the Console of that wallet issue the following command:

Code:
walletpassphrase yourWalletPassPhraseHere 600
(replace yourWalletPassPhraseHere with the actual passphrase for that wallet)

That will unlock the wallet for 10 minutes.

In the Console of the wallet downstairs issue the following commands:

Code:
dumpprivkey 194kMYZoK9EyNHvSTHWhxqfER1Radjawdr

You will receive a private key.  Don't tell me what the private key is.  Don't share it with anyone.  If anyone gains access to this private key, then can steal/spend your bitcoins.

Carefully write down this private key.  Make sure you get all the letters/numbers correct (it is important to keep track of which letters are upper case and which are lower case).

Then bring the written down private key upstairs.

In the Console of the wallet upstairs issue the following commands:

Code:
walletpassphrase yourWalletPassPhraseHere 600
importprivkey yourPrivateKeyHere
(replace yourPrivateKeyHere with the written down private key and yourWalletPassPhraseHere with the actual passphrase for that wallet)

This will take a few minutes to complete.  It will scan the entire blockchain looking for any transactions that were sent to address 194kMYZoK9EyNHvSTHWhxqfER1Radjawdr and import them into this wallet.

Let me know when that's done, and if the balance displayed on the wallet upstairs increases by 22.89164418 BTC to a new balance of 23.20316015.

If so, I'll send you the new raw transaction that you'll want to create/sign/send on the upstairs wallet.

any way of sending the rest of the bitcoins over to the new wallet?

Yes.  Just waiting for you to return.  Perhaps you noticed these recent posts?

Now we just need to get the bitcoins and addresses from the old wallet merged into the new wallet.

Next we'll have to figure out which addresses to move to the new wallet, and then we'll have to figure out if we need to continue sweeping up what's left of the tiny outputs.

I guess the problem is already solved by the time of writing, but couldnt OP just use MtGox or blockchain.info to swipe his address?

2 confirmations already.  It will likely get another 4 confirmations in the next half hour, maybe an hour.
Should be fully confirmed and delivered by now.

My hat is off to Danny Hamilton... he has exhibited the utmost patience through this endeavor. I would be screaming at ECore by now to RTFPosts! (no offense  Cheesy)
none taken and you are correct, he is a hero!

i sent the bitcoins but i forgot i had the transaction fee set to 0....will it get there eventually?  im surprised it didnt ask for a fee

Yes, much like the transaction we used to send the bitcoins between your two wallets (and the transaction we used last night to consolidate some of the "dust").  Your transaction is less than 10 kilobytes, has no outputs less than 0.01 BTC and has a priority larger than 57,600,000 (this transaction has a priority of 143,727,000).  As long as you meet those three criteria, the network will allow you to send your transaction without a fee.  It will take a while for it to confirm, but this transaction has a priority twice as high as the one we used to move the contents between the wallets.  I'll be surprised if it takes more than 2 hours to confirm.
