I must be missing something or too tired, but it makes no sense. Why the heck OpenCL implementation will become so dramatically less efficient after certain DAG on just some cards if memory is not an issue?

I saw elsewhere that Vega suffers from this issue, too...  Undecided

Has Mr Claymore himself comment on this issue?

With every epoch the world is seeing performance drop on the RX series. Is it actually a software problem unable to correctly access the larger memory chunks or simply an AMD architectural limit? Will there be a solution or will there not?

Probably the design is flawed, supposed there are 2 memory banks, 1 is 0 to 2gb and the second is from 2gb to 4gb, as soon as the eth miner accessed anything after the 2gb there are a decrease of performance, cache or likely constraints while accessing over and over it, but then again you would say okay but what about the 8gb polaris, see that is the thing, if there are 2 memory banks then the 8gb polaris should not have any performance degradation, so it might be another thing, cache or a series of flaws regarding how it access the memory.

Dont think Claymore will be able to, amd need to update drivers and that is it, its up to amd, now i wonder if amd will really do it cause they want their vega line to sell and miners to buy it, so forget it. AMD will leave all polaris owners in the dark hehe

Only RX cards are affected, not the older ones like 290x. Also Nvidia Pascal seems to be on the safe side...

why the f is that the case that only RX series cards are affected, this is crap i tell u

Yeah. The ice age is for the entire ethereum mining community. I too dont understand all this crap against AMD's RX series. More likely, it will depend on the memory of cards, 4GB cards will soon be too low to handle DAG.

So the hashrate will not drop on Nvidia cards?

I'm going to build my second rig and I'm not sure if I should move from AMD RX cards to Nvidia, maybe I will open a thread too.

If the hashrate won't drop in Nvidia cards then I would purchase nvidia cards before the AMD ones.

The Nvidia 10 series cards are not affected by the epoch increase. So far I have been able to offset most of the ETH hash drop on my mixed five card RX 4XX/5XX 4GB and 8GB rig from every new epoch by lowering the DCR dual mining intensity from -dcri 25 to -dcri 21 and the dual mining speed has taken a big hit.

Epoch 132:

Code:
19:13:19:631	9fc	target: 0x0000000112e0be82 (diff: 4000MH), epoch 132(2.03GB)

Epoch 133:

Code:

Is this affecting EXP and ETC with the same rate of impact?

Hmm... Looks like this issue indeed affects ETC, too

EXP was not affected by this problem. The DAG is only at 22 on that fork. My rig mined at the expected 29.7MH/s, rather than 27.5MH/s.

But seems that this DAG has affected all GPUs right?

It affects RX4xx/5xx but not older AMD or NVIDIA cards.

Also the RX580 8GB versions?
Yup, it gets to all of them. Maybe not only the newest versions

Correct about iceage incorrect about the memory. It's not the amount of memory but the memory architecture and how it is addressed by the miner software. Still unclear about all statements being made.

We will never see a DAG bigger than 4GB in ETH PoW world. DAG increases by a factor of 0.73 per year.

How soon until the mining specific cards come out for AMD and Nvidia?

Mining cards do not help much with a POS coin. ice age will kill eth mining regardless of the card. So for eth all these new cards are not worth the investment. All current gpus switching tot other coins will kill these other coins as wel. Overcapacity. Only ppl with free electricity will survive

They have been for a while in few countries, even newegg was selling some rx 470 mining specific cards.
