Myetherwallet is best for ethereum, it is support for erc20 token mean can be used for participate in the ICOs projects, no need download all of the ethereum's blockchain, myetherwallet is secure too just becareful with phishing website of myetherwallet, it will be dangerous for our ethereum and our token.
yes that's a very horrible case, many people lose their coins there.
I suggest to avoid slack, and always check on MEW address. or bookmarks your MEW so fishing can be avoided.

I prefer MEW, although it is very risky with network and malware, or phishing but MEW is very efficient.

Yeah , im using MEW too and i buying ledger for more secure.
I recommend using MEW and buying some desktop application like ledger , trezor because their have more secure system.

I have hold BTC in Electrum for some time and really like that wallet. Now, I want to get some ETH. So, I'm wondering what desktop wallet I should choose. I'd like a desktop wallet that doesn't download the full blockchain... These are three options about which I've read nice things on the Internet. What do you think?

MyEtherWallet
https://www.myetherwallet.com

Etherwall
https://www.etherwall.com

Exodus

I think myetherwallet is my favorite wallet, I have long used the wallet, and myetherwallet can also accept token type
Myetherwallet has been including on the web wallet and that can't be included on the dekstop wallet. But exodus was including on it, and another choice about the mist wallet and parity and the latest that supported the hardfork is the symphony wallet.

As far as I know there is no ethereum desktop wallet available that doesn't require to download the whole blockchain. MyEtherWallet is not a desktop wallet but if you don't want to download full ethereum blockchain MyEtherWallet is one of the best option and it lets you hold your private key. If you really want a desktop wallet you can try Exodus. I use Mew for accepting erc-20 tokens and I have Exodus in my desktop pc for storing ethereum and other altcoins (Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dash) and I don't experienced any problem using both.

Il think MyEtherWallet does the job admirably and has the full support for ERC-20 tokens built in.

You have to have your wits about you as there are an awful lot of scams coming from places such as Slack trying to prey on the unwary but as long as you never click links to login in and type the URL yourself you should be fine.

Has support for Ledger and Trezor built in

Look it doesn't really matter as long as you have control over your private keys, that is what matter the most. Wallets are just like gateways to the blockchain. Worst wallet is when you do not have control over your private keys. Maybe it's worth considering the speed as well, when choosing what to use. MEW would be good.

i think you can use jaxx as your ethereum wallet desktop because jaxx have build multi wallet for desktop. i think its little slow for medium spec of computer but its good and safe, i am using this wallet too both for my android and my desktop. but i also use my etherwallet too for saving my tokens that i have. for etherwall and exoduse, i am not try yet and i don't have any experience with those wallet. i think each of wallet can give you a chance to secure your coins as long as you can save the private keys.

MEW is my choice. Wallet that has support of ERC-20 tokens. One thing - you must beware fishing.
