The possibility exists but it certainly takes a relatively long time to be able to compete with the price of bitcoin which currently has the highest value in the market Cryptocurrency.indeed ETH progress is increasing rapidly and always interesting to trade.

I saw this article and tweeted it because it's very likely with the rapid rise of Ethereum it's value will qua-triple. When the coin 1st made it's appearance I thought it could likely be stable and today I know that to be the case. Time will tell if it can overtake Bitcoin but it's doing a fantastic job competing.

ETH is trading at insane levels, I think at the moment we are in an altcoin bubble, the altcoins have gone up at such an incredible rate that this is impossible to maintain, and among them ETH seems to be one that is especially inflated to the point that to me a crash seems imminent.

90% of the users here have been waiting for the altcoin prices to crash ever since Ether reached BTC0.05 in March. But after three months, it continues to rise, at a rate which even eclipses the corresponding rise of Bitcoin. How long this is going to continue? Perhaps Ether is going to stay at these levels.
It is impossible to know when, the truth is no one knows but the fundamental issue is there, it is going to happen because there is no way these levels of market capitalization can be maintained, from the beginning of the year we are overall 570% up in market capitalization in all markets.

Waves or Ripple will taking over Ethereum first before Ethereum take over Bitcoin
Everyone has their favorites coins to support ,i am sure that ripple wont take over Ethereum,as a general user i think Ethereum is much simple and user friendly than waves, sure waves does have a good interface but i prefer ETH better in the battle between the two. Grin

It has being a tremendous rise in the price of all the alts coins and we are not seeing any major correction in most of the coins,i agree 100% with toknormal, there will be a time when the volume of ETH surpasses bitcoin but the long term winner will be bitcoin, when it comes to valuation.

Why something can take over BTC? ETH price is not gonna be higher than BTC, if BTC price will drop down very big, other cryptos will follow. BTC is a market mover.
Yes I think that too, like $, the dollar is the currency of the world real currency, And bitcoin as a benchmark for digital money

Obviously there is no crypto currency till now which can replace bitcoin in near future but when it comes to ETH, yes ETH has a great future ahead as different countries using ETH block-chain for transactions and also market cap is steadily growing which means that ETH could be the next big thing in cryptocurrency world.

I very much doubt Ethereum will overtake bitcoin. It may exceed its marketcap at some point, but it's unlikely to ever prove a long term store of value in the way that Bitcoin will.

The reasons are subtle but fundamental.

First of all, Ethereum is primarily a technology platform, not a store of value. It's an operating system for blockchain apps and business models. As such, the value lies not in the blockchain token (as it does with pure monetary assets like bitcoin) but in the equity that floats on top of it.

That makes Ethereum hugely powerful as a technology but as useful as a chocolate teapot as a store of value because it's so dependent on its feature set. Therefore, it will go obsolete far faster than Bitcoin.

It's no accident that people are speculating on Ethereum 'overtaking bitcoin' at this point in time - it's almost the only semi-mature smart contract chain out there at the moment. But that's all about to change, specifically on 3 counts:

1. Much of the recent hike in price is due to the massive wave of ICOs which are all priced in Ether. When the wave turns around (the ICO founders start to liquidate their holdings in order to spend) then things might not look so pretty

2. Bitcoin is unique. There is only one original, launched on the 9th January 2009 - the 'supernova' of crypto. You cannot improve on that as a store of value through "better tech" unless you invented a time machine. Stainless steel is far more useful than gold, but not such a great store of value. Ethereum is stainless steel. Far more useful than bitcoin, and in far more abundance (there are already 2 chains, never mind all the alternative brands) but is simply an operating system. It therefore gets more vulnerable as an investment with time due to the tsunami of competitors that's about to come washing over the horizon, including Bitcoin-backed versions such as Rootstock.

3. Regulation. While bitcoin is almost impossible to regulate - being a pure monetary token like a gold coin - the equity that floats on top of a smart contract chain is far easier to regulate. All that has to happen is for national trading authorities to hint at regulating blockchain based ICO's and all that value will run for the hills in mass exits.

So, sure, the froth of Ether may well exceed bitcoin's marketcap at some point. But only in the way that electronic typewriters were big in the 70's. They were ok for a while for making people rich, but pure monetary assets such as gold lasted a whole lot longer.

Bitcoin is yer gold.
Ethereum is yer electronic typewriter.

Very well summarized! I can only back that up.
And it's quite funny how everybody else here is ignoring the most competent post of this whole thread.
Truth hurts I guess.

Hi there,

The reputable website "Bitcoinist" just realease a news about the ethereum future.

And Ethereum seems to overtake Bitcoin in 2018 like the specialists said...
For the Bitcoins Fanboys, i don't try to denigrate Bitcoin because i like BTC aswell, but we cannot say Ethereum is not a serious concurrent to BTC.

Just read this article.

http://bitcoinist.com/ethereum-overtake-bitcoin-2018/

Bitcoin needs to innovate or die, I think they will eventually innovate and thats why I am still bullish on it. I do think however there is a strong likelihood ethereum will overtake bitcoin and soon, but it will also get hit much harder in a crash.

Bitcoin will still the king as gold/money !
Ethereum may have a bright future, so I bought 1 just in case Wink
I do not think buying one unit of any cryptocurrency is going to change much, but hey it is better to have some earnings than to have none, but for what I can see now, BTC and ETH seems to be moving in the same way at the moment and in the same proportion.

Ethereum future is bright, I agree with that, but Ethereum overtaking bitcoin is impossible. Imo there is no altcoin that can overtake bitcoin in any year. Bitcoin is more well known and when it comes to trust. People would still choose to invest in btc especially those new in crypto.
