when it comes to facebook.. alot of the non fiat lovers/libertarians. etc do not use facebook
when it comes to bitcoin. alot of large investors dont want to link their personal info to outsiders. to prevent unwanted stalking/scamming/publicity
when it comes to facebook groups. man bitcoiners are too busy making businesses or investing to even want/have tme to be in a group.
when it comes to international populations, many people of other languages steer clear of english groups and stick to groups based in their own nationality

so i think that this method of trying to count users wont have very accurate results.

Ad maiora!
Just see the number of accounts here at bitcointalk if you want an estimate of Bitcoin users. It's probably pretty close to the number of actual users.
Of course most only have a fraction of a bitcoin

this is silly.  now you're just assuming that everyone in the world uses facebook.  also i think no one will join your group to estimate the number of facebook users that are aware of what bitcoin is.

News of today: half internet population is on FB.

i got sick of facebook.  I still have my account but very rarely login (few times a year).

LOL what you looking at?
How can you estimate the number of bitcoin users via Facebook? There are so many people who have over 1000 FB accounts and the count cannot be considered a valid one. Even polls and surveys are manipulated due to multiple entries by single users.

Each and every method will not give an exact number.
It's just a try.

Look, I am a bitcoiner, but sorry, I would never join your group. Why you might ask?
Well all that NSA needs to do is check this group and would have a very nice list of Bitcoin users with their complete personal info! Too easy for them if you are asking me.
I like this answer. I have to add that I met many bitcoin users and among them are only few facebook users. This social network is highly disregarded in bitcoin community.
Bitcoin folks treasure anonymous approach of cryptocurrencies and freedom, facebook is a tool of invigilation and database for NSA. Giving them our IDs just like that would be bad idea.
Personally I don't use Facebook and I never will. You are a product if you are using facebook not an user.

Well... I would say that thinking NSA doesn't know if you use Bitcoin or not when you don't subscribe to FB and say this clearly is quite naive.

Echelon is not only tracing all communications of internet, but examining also voice calls and all text.

Now, imagine that you, from your cool pc, open up the Bitcoin wallet... VOILA' NSA knows  that at n.XX, Clever Street, Pasadena, where Genius Guy lives, somebody just connected to a Bitcoin node Cheesy you don't even need to make a transaction Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I don't know if this is allowed here, if not I'm sorry for it, just delete the thread.

Anyway, as I'm really curious on how many Bitcoin users are out there and it seems there's no reliable way to estimate it at the moment, I thought this could be a good try.
Quick, easy and inexpensive.
Just ask for subscription, spread the word, and let's see how many will join.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1153361628014629/

Also, remember: the more we are, the more reputation Bitcoin gains... so it's in our interest to manage to make this estimate.

there is already btc talk that give a good approx.
actually the users are:  525800
30% are clone and you don' have to count et voilà here there is the Bitcoin Users Number (approx)

If you think the whole world likes forums and waste time over them you are SO wrong, man.

are they trying to count how many BTC users or who are the BTC users?
"how many" is fine but "who is" that's a red flag to me if am to be asked

Well if everyone joins a Facebook group then everyone will be identifiable.

Uhhh so what? You scared? Something dirty going on??? Cheesy

Nobody will know the addresses you use anyway when you pay or receive money.
And I don't think everybody will join, an estimate will still be necessary, but I think that if the thing will run, it will get us to a much clearer number than with other methods.

Criminals will probably not join, and that's good Cheesy

So as dotthebeat said, btc users love their anonymity. How are you going to get accurate numbers if half the community will not participate?

the problem would be if one users will partecipate with multiple account, any way to determinate bitcoin via online is not actually feasible, you need their ID if you want to do have a real number

It is a nice idea so I joined Smiley

Thank you, dude, let's hope many will appreciate and we'll finally have a rough idea of how many we are.
And don't forget to spread the word, so if you have some friends in Bitcoin invite them to the group Smiley

i think this is not a best way to estimate number of bitcoin users
as we know that facebook group is best way to spaming link and they could create multiple account for do that, and i think the best way is: estimate based on local exchanger
example:
In my country (indonesian)
There is a big local exchanger here (bitcoin.co.id)
and the member should verification their account wit identity proof (so there is no multiple account here)
and today there are 66.504 members has registered
so we can concluse that indonesian's bitcoiners more than 66.000 peoples
and then we can count the next country
But the problem is not at all countries have their own exchange site

I think this is a good way probably.
Most Bitcoin adopters had probably gone through an official dealer like this.
I bought mine on Bitcoin.de.
The problem is: how many of them release the numbers?

I think so
but unfortunately not all countries have their own exchange site
and of course not all exchange command their member to verification their identity
so mulitple account or fake account still created
and finally i realized that estimate bitcoin user its so hard
