Mining away one KWh at a time
One important point: there is 0 HW errors. So who said that 60+ degrees is unacceptable temperature?..

Take a look at my overclocking results - maximum value of HWE is 0.02%. So relax and enjoy silent S5s.  Wink

its recommended to run around 60 if I recall reading in a manual somewhere

I know that this is an old thread, however
I'm not sure thats a good temp running at stock speeds, I'm running at 400 and have temps at 55 and 59 for the two hash boards
getting a stable no error 1,436th/s average, I do notice the throughput drops to 1260th/s below 50 or above 65 temp, so the sweet spot is around 56-58
Im also running a 2440W dell server supply , with a cheap 120mm exhaust fan on the output, one more thing I noticed my temps run much lower when the miner is sitting on a flat surface with the bottom closed by at least 8 degrees lower

I draw a little circuit to drive 4 fans with one S5 controller. All fans are powered from pci-e connector so controller won't get over-loaded. Pwm is from controller and fan1 gives rpm-reading. Fan 2 is driven with same pwm than fan1. Now I can use 1 controller to drive 4 hashboards and both miners have 2 fans. I'm currently testing how this works with stock fans.

Two weeks ago I needed more heat to the house when temperature went down to -27C outside.
Lady of the house is very sensitive to miner related noise so I needed a lot of damping.
I had one unused S5 and fixed Arctic F12 to inlet side and S1 fan to outlet. F12 is 3 pin fan and miner beebed so outlet fan is connected to fan1 connector and inlet to fan2. Outlet fan 1560rpm inlet 1200, 20% fan percentage, temps 63 and 59C, room temp about +20C at floor.
S5 has miner packing foam at bottom and top is covered with ESD plastic.
Power is from pair of parallel DPS600 server powers adjusted to 11,6V; 46db about 1m up from mainer; 350Mhz 1134Ghs avg 5days from last boot, 0,0256% errors.
Miner is V1.3 it don't like undervolts below 11,3V.

540W from wall with 2 x DPS600 maybe one would be enought voltage is adjuted so little.
Edit2: S5 took the same power with one DPS, interesting result these powers work very well together when current share pin is connected.

I sure hope you're underclocking this thing, those two fans aren't gonna keep an S5 cool enough if ambient temps start to get higher.

159 cfm,  38 decibels, 3500 rpm

also, i think the other fans they make are the slickest looking ones i've seen

Wanted to contriboot.
The stock fan is only good for sending small Craft into low earth orbit.
I'm using 3pin corsair sp120 running full speed off a molex to 6 x 3pin fan board for the push and an af120 @ full speed from the same board. I think the onboard pwm is shit
Now I live in Australia and it's summer so ambient temperature is around 30*c and often up to 40*c and my s5 is running at 55*c just slightly underclocked to keep it there.

Much happier with that.

What do you mean by "6 x 3 pin fan board"? The fans are not powered by the S5 itself?

Correct. Molex to 6 x 3 pin. The adapters are around $3 and they don't rev up and down just constant speed.

look...it's set to shutdown at 80c so run it 50-70 it will be fine.
don't listen to these clueless people.

Clueless ?? It's dogie man! You should take time to read a little bit more the forum and learn about what your talking about.

Dogie is highly respected in the community for evaluation of all kind of miner.

ya, clueless.

go look the the tear down and see what is and is not covered by the heatsinks and fan...then talk....

Temperature from 40 degrees to 60+ degrees can up power consumption by 10+ %

Bitcoin / Crypto mining Hardware.
An even cheaper mod would is to trick the temp sensors into lowering fan speed to the lowest range.

chances are we are most likely experiencing this setup with the S5s.

Looks like the OP is a gambling person, according to his banner...

No. I like get btc for free, luckyflop is signature campain.
I put those little money into altcoins so it is form of gamble Smiley

I have setup >200 standalone miners, some farms, i got very big experience with variety of miners, chips etc.
Only few of my miners died, coincidentially dragons and ccdesks. I have modded large chunk of my stuff for fun and noise reduction.

If it's fun, and it works for you, great. But the mod you suggested is risky, you do acknowledge that? If so, it can't hurt to point that out so that others know what risk they're taking by running at higher temps.

Nice...

by the the new BM1384 chip has a max operating temp of 125c...(weather it's ambient or chip temp not sure) but either way, it can run 60-70c just fine..that's why the software has a stop mining is reached 80c checkbox. Smiley

see for your self:

chapter: 4Electrical Character
section: 4.2.

have a nice day Smiley and the vrm's and other components are the same way new = better

DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE!!!

If you actually do some 'research', you may find about the Arrhenius equation and the relationship between temperature and failure ratehttp://reliawiki.com/index.php/Arrhenius_Relationship.  Failure rate increases exponentially with temperature (in Kelvin).  As Dogie pointed out, using the maximum specified junction temperature of the ASIC as if it was the ambient temperature and applied to all components is flawed.  I totally agree with Aurel's graphic that you need to get your RMA forms ready (just to be rejected by any sensible supplier who would claim that you operated well outside the specified envelope).

don't listen to these clueless people.

It may run at those temps fine now, but higher temps will likely degrade performance over time. That might not have been a big deal before when we were seeing double digit difficulty increases, but difficulty has been relatively flat for a couple months now. I'd underclock like others have suggested ... taking off 100-150Ghs seems worth it to keep it running longer.

 70 c is a bit high.

 50 to 64 c would be a better bet.

If I ran your fans I would downclock to freq 300-325.

have to say the noise level is good.

That's pretty funny. Dogie's guides are for noobs. I never found his guides to be useful, sure they're in high definition and big ass pictures. But, the contents are a bit lacking. Just because someone's popular doesn't mean he's perfect for everyone. I personally don't need big ass pictures, I'd like more info. Big ass pictures don't do anything for me, without proper written guides.
