But if one doesn't have to jump through too many hoops like filling out surveys, surfing pages,
and doing other time consuming and annoying tasks, or giving away their personal information,
etc., then one might consider the coins received as being 'reasonably' free. And those are
the types of sites I try to list.

This is from the original post:

There are some sites where one can get free bitcoins. The catch, if you want to call it that, is
that you might be exposed to advertising. Or it might be incentive to spend more time at their site,
to gamble with or do something else there which will be to their benefit in some way. Or it might be
a way to give newbies a start with getting and using Bitcoins, which, it is hoped, will benefit
Bitcoin as a whole. As long as anything like spending more time at their site, or doing something
else, is optional then I will consider the coins given out there as "free."

Yes one can see the original thread in the Service Discussion sub-forum by using the link in my sig
below or using the link in the OP of this newbie thread, which is a mirror of that Service Discussion
thread. This allows newbies who can't yet post in other sections a chance to ask questions or
give some input on this topic.

Note that since these threads were created a couple other categories have been added due to
popular demand, where one may have to jump through a few more hoops and where the BTC
may not be exactly "free" but rather "earned".

Those two categories being:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gambling sites that give out free bitcoins ( freerolls etc. ) after you join
----------------------------------------------------------------------

and

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not exactly Free but popular "earn" Bitcoin sites
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Feel free to comment on, or ask questions about, any site listed in these threads.
As with the example of those new categories being added through popular demand,
user feedback is encouraged.

You have to balance them.

I like getting something for a visit, but if it's a teeny amount, it is not worth my time there.

I also like getting something GOOD for a visit, but if it is a 1 in 10000 chance of getting a decent payout, it's not worth my time.

If your prize takes 50 visits to make the equivalent to a penny, not worth it.  If your prize needs two months worth of visits daily to maybe see it, it's not worth it.

As for visits,  once a day is good.  Besides, many of those sites are earning their revenue by advertising, and if you hit it many times a day, it may not count for credit for the ad view.

I just maintain this list, so hopefully some of the owners of these sites will read your feedback, and perhaps use it to improve some
of these sites.

I don't use many of these sites much, except to check them with the address of the newbie lotto winner of the day.

Here is my standard answer on the question of, "What good is it if one only gets very very small amounts?"
