People give away cryptocoins for several reasons. Some people just want to get people into cryptocoins. Some people are selling a product or service and they use a free giveaway. There are various reasons, just like you get a free t-shirt... that costs someone something and you are getting it for free to get exposed to that product or service.
do people actually use the alt coins? do they have an advantage on bitcoins or do creators just hoard and make money on nothing
Well, that's a wide open question and there is a lot of opinions surrounding what you asked. People do use Altcoins, but Bitcoin is by far the leader of the pack by a large margin when it comes to crypto-currencies. Some people don't like some of the features of Bitcoin, so they created other coins. Many of the Altcoins are pump and dump coins... this is a fact. Some have legit uses. Some are vanity coins. Some hope to meet a demand in a niche market ie. the adult industry.
My personal view is that Bitcoin is the money coin. The altcoins are more trading coins. I have a whole house full of stuff I collected which I wanted and cost me money. Is the stuff worth anything... not what I paid for it. But at the time I wanted it and paid for it. People collect altcoin and enjoy mining them as a hobby. So, in my view, there will always be a demand for the 'collector coins'.

Although where I come from Jimmy would almost certainly be masculine it wouldn't surprise me to meet someone feminine with that name. Most likely in Asia. Once a girl served me at Pizza Hut in Beijing who had the name Frank. I asked what was up and she replied that their boss made them all wear Western name tags. So he had a whole bunch of Western name tags made up and at the beginning of each shift they just reached into the pot and grabbed one. Lucky dip style.

The giveaway is nt for newbies only. Go to cryptocointalk.com and take a look. Browse for a while see the mature conversation and post your address in the giveaways. For the BBQcoin giveaway a simple address is 25 a good post is 50 and a really good post is 100. Put some thought into it
