Just as sakkosekk mentioned, you should set up a cutoff temp, and it is easy to do with CGminer or BFGMiner.

I have a temp cut-off at 80C just to be safe.

Just got into this mining thing less than a month ago, with a miserable nVidia GTX570. My 250KHash were doing admirably up until now, but I should have known that 89 degrees C for 15 days straight would bugger something up.
Oh well. Roll on the end of the month til paycheck and 2 shiny new R9-280Xs
Just a general grumble!
