fuck you mt gox

hallucinating to see people defending mt gox when the guy got all his account hacked because of their incompetence. guy is a customer, doesn't have to be a computer freak!

He got his MtGox account hacked because of their incompetence.

He got all the other accounts hacked because of his incompetence. This isn't 1992 anymore, you can't have the same, weak password on all your sites. You don't have to be a security genius to know that.

I'm just tuning in.  So basically this guy used the same password for all his accounts!!!

WOW.

This isn't 1992 anymore...

I'd like to laugh, HAHA!!!, but the poor guy is in some serious trouble now...

But I like to be optimiztic and think of how we make the best out of bad situations.  Maybe he could become a new role model that does "The More You Know" infomercials and have his picture with GOXED on internet billboard ads allover the world, which would say:  "Public Service Announcment: Dear all netizens, don't be like me.  Don't get GOXED.  Please use different passwords for each account.  It isn't 1992 anymore, you know..."

Floating around every corner of the internet. Seriously. You're on it. No, I'm not screwing with you.

Perhaps we should use different *usernames* on all sites, but keep the same password, eh?

Wouldn't have helped you with gmail, but that's not a bad idea, assuming your password is strong.

No site wants their passwords leaked, even hashed.  But shit happens, all the time.  even a good secure password with an unsalted MD5 hash will realistically never be broken; stronger hashes and salts are a compromise for bad passwords and assist mainly in making brute force slower.

On the other hand, sites like Sony who kept their user passwords completely in the clear, not hashed or encrypted,.  Well, those are the shady companies I wouldn't touch with a 39 and a half foot pole.

you share part of the blame though, for using same password everywhere. Stop doing it.

Mt Gox shares most of the blame for leaking their fucking accounts database with unsalted MD5 hashes.

If Mt Gox had a notice on the sign up page: "Warning: we will send your password to our accountant for no particular reason" then sure, I would agree that it is the OP's fault for not choosing something stronger/unique.

It is important to understand that the average user doesn't know why a strong password is needed. They assume that they only need something that won't be guessed. Even a knowledgeable user could reasonably assume that Mt Gox would actively protect their database, and not send it to anonymous strangers for no particular reason.

When it comes down to blaming a user who should have been more careful, or a someone in a position of trust who did something retardedly stupid, I tend to blame the latter.

This is exactly like driving drunk, and some dipshit hits you with their car and you get arrested. Sure what you did was reckless and dangerous, but you might have never gotten fucked if it wasn't for them. That being said, your face is fucking awesome.

[Update June 24 - 02:56 GMT] Pushing until 15:00 GMT.
We have found that balances on some older accounts look significantly incorrect when compared with the old database. At this time we do not know what caused the balances to be off, or how many of the older accounts are affected. We haven't touched the old backend or database, so we're going to import the accounts again once we have found what caused the off-balances.

No money is lost, we still have the records of all transactions that happened prior to the bitcoin sell-off. All funds deposited are still in our bank accounts, and we're going to try and get this resolved by 15:00 GMT.

We look forward to getting everyone trading within an hour of getting users logged in and accessing their accounts.

Go easy on this guy, he could be for real.

There is an "ownski" on the leaked MtGox accounts list with a non-salted encryption, easily cracked to an 8 character password.

He probably used the same password on many sites (including his Gmail account), just like many others did, *probably some of you*. He was just unlucky enough to have been an early MtGox user who came in before the salted encryption came about.

of course, that could easily mean his forum account got compromised by anyone cracking passwords.

It's a topsy-turvy world.
