Forgot the part where it is a bait and switch and a fork of telegram and other services. Also paying people to introduce new users to the network, this is something that's been done for years and it hasn't produced a major success for a reason: something ceases being 'cool' (among the trendy folks) when they find out that somebody got paid to lure them to use the thing. In addition, especially in crypto's case like with Stellar, it also opens up avenues for blackhats to game the freebies too.
As for the original post - forgot the part where many different groups got awards and money - so Gems' name is buried on the list and thus it isn't really any game changing publicity. The $100K is nice, I guess, but in Gems' case they already had a lot of funding.
