I would go with Avast! + MalwareBytes.
But before that, if those older laptops are no more needed by anyone, I would manually uninstall what has become unnecessary and all the crapware I can find.

At this point, if you have freed a lot of space or if you never did it before, a defrag of the Hard Disk could help you to squeeze a bit of performance from that older hardware.
Assuming we are talking of a previous Windows OS, MyDefrag is a good defrag tool (http://www.mydefrag.com/).

Then install and run a complete scan with the two programs above; I think this should be enough to band-aid your situation.

I used AVG for a few years, but recently changed to Comodo. Since most people here seem to prefer Avast!, can someone tell me how it compares to Comodo? Also, does it have a decent firewall to go along with it?

There was a time when Windows Defender was actually decent. For now, I'd recommend Malwarebytes for a lightweight, reliable solution.

No one use Norton security?

Norton is horrible and is way too resource-intensive.

Thanks for all of the tips guys. It looks like Avast! is clearly the highest recommended so far, I think I will look into that and Malwarebytes.

If you're looking for a lightweight one give bitdefender a try also. I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.

I've had a perfect expirience with bitdefender free edition in the past. It's also friendly to gamers and updates automaticaly. I never interupted any of my activities and never gave me false alarms.

Here's a link

Oh, Bitdefender is another good anti-virus solutions. Basically, don't use Windows default anti-virus, it's bad!

Use windows defender and scan computer with eset online scan once per month! (Be careful to turn off auto-delete because sometimes detectes miners, wallets...)
There is a link of eset online scanner: http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
Its free! No installation required (just plugin if you are using crome and firefox, no plugin required if you use internet explorer)
Have a nice day!
Windows Defender use to be good/okay but after Microsoft started focusing on other projects (xbox, cloud solutions and such) it has become bad. You can look around the internet about this. Most people use Avast as a free solution, I believe it is among the best. I usually install it on each PC that goes through my hands.
Hm.. I know, thats the reason I scan with eset online scanner. Avast is not good, slows computer for 30%!

I'm not sure how you're measuring your "efficiency", but I assure you that Avast does not slow down your computer by 1/3 "efficiency".

Windows Defender is not really a good solutions. I definitely suggest using a better anti-virus solution such as ESET or Kaspersky.
