All right, thanks all for the helpful comments.

One more question, will I be able to see each individual donation and its amount? Or does it just display the immediate sum total and keep going up?

if you use blockr.io donation button it shows the amount in the button of the donation button if you like

Yes, you can check the wallet balance at any blockchain explorer.

since you want to use it on your blog , i find that  the donation button created with http://btc.blockr.io/ is way nicer than what blockchain.info created.

you should go to http://btc.blockr.io/ and put your address you want to receive donations in the search field then in the coming page click on the "Donate button" the rest is easy just choose the style, text, size, color, text and other options that you like and then click "get code ..."

the result is way cooler this way.

yes you should be able to, wallets show a transaction log, so you can filter to see the transactions sending to your donation address, which should tell you exactly how much was sent, when it was sent, and from where it was sent (address).

Take a look at Shapeshift.io, you can use their API and accept Bitcoin and 25+ other altcoins.   Its called the shifty button.   Take a look at the code and if it's something you would be interested in, I can post the code integrated for your BTC address.

accepting altcoins might be a good idea in the future, but right now op has little knowledge on bitcoin, he should familiarize himself with bitcoin first imo.

Why not simply post your receiving address on your blog with a heading ; BTC donations. ?

If you want BTC and you are asking the BTC community, this is the simplest way.

If you want any type of donation, but want it converted to BTC you will have to go through a 3rd party. Then you have to trust that 3rd party doesn't f--k up.

Just ask for BTC and have them sent direct to wallet. That's what BTC is all about anyway. Autonomy

Hmm. Okay sounds good. I had read a thing before that suggested using mobile wallet apps because they're more secure, my phone is one of those that is default encrypted out of the box. I guess I assumed that helped but either way I guess.

For mobile wallet, i used Mycelium, since i first time downloaded this app and use this, i've never got any problem.
Just make your system secure for avoid a malware or something fishy site which can stolen your coins, read this thread for more reference: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/keep-your-system-updated-and-stay-secure-tips-to-avoid-viruses-trojans-203876
And this thread about How To Create 100% secure wallet.

What's the main website that supplies this code you offered? Thanks.

blockchain.info

blockchain isnt as reliable anymore with the downtimes becoming more than what should be expected of the service they provide; a HD wallet is better for security and reliability if youre tech savvy as you claim to be op.

he asked if what site the supplies the code i gave. why should i answer it with another site? LOL

im just giving my opinion that blockchain isnt as reliable as it used to be, i dont know why youre getting offended by that.

The blockchain is around 37 GB atm, makes me prefer Electrum which uses remote servers for most of the blockchain.
I'd suggest Electrum over most others.

Also, making a donation address is quite easy. Websites such as this: http://bitcoinqrcode.org/ can allow you to make a QR code out of your address, which can be simply displayed alongside the address itself.

If you expect donations to be in large amounts and vital to you, and need safety from volatility, you can try coinbase (https://www.coinbase.com/merchants). It can auto-convert your BTC to USD.

Hm. Okay, how do I know which address to use? And this wallet app says it generates a new address after every transaction so how do I put "my address" in when it changes constantly? What's the main website that supplies this code you offered? Thanks.

first off, it'd help to know which wallet youre using. to have a dedicated address for accepting donation, a wallet that generates new addresses constantly isnt very useful; id recommend multibit if you dont want to download the whole blockchain.

I downloaded the "Bitcoin" wallet app on my phone just to check it out ("de.schildbach.wallet" it's subtitled in the app info). But I have not yet used any wallet so I'm not committed to it. I can check out Multibit.

multibit, bitcoin-qt, and armory are all great HD wallets, and id stay away from mobile wallets, something about pseudorandomness leading to people using the app all generating the same private key. go here and read up on all of the wallets to see which one best fits your needs: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

Hm. Okay, how do I know which address to use?

you can use any address that you control/own

And this wallet app says it generates a new address after every transaction so how do I put "my address" in when it changes constantly?

AFAIK any funds you recieve in your 1 address, it will reflect to your total balance

Hello, I've never used Bitcoins but I'm interested in using them as a way to accept donations/tips on my blog. I have Googled around for help but the info I found looks like it's out of date, or not quite what I'm looking for so I came to a forum. Could anyone please offer me some guidance on using Bitcoins for donations? Please keep in mind I'm totally new to this. I consider myself relatively tech savvy but the detailed cryptography and code discussion is over my head. Thanks for any help.

try to read this. hope you can enjoy using bitcoin mate. goodluck Smiley
