Well, this is why hobos are so fun, and nova is so.. hard)

After implementing of the rule "max 10 NVC per PoS reward" people started to divide their holdings to approx 100 NVC, thus creating many many inputs (especially some of large holders), plus PoS block likely creates 2 new inputs when generating, so the PoS diff now is so high, that, for example, I have an input with 90 days age and 1090 coin*days, and it still cannot give a birth to smth =\

Yeah, HBN is much fun, wow, such fast  Grin

I just finally downloaded my NVC, but haven't tried staking them yet... I know it will be much more difficulty.

So it looks like the high PoW for HBN, made a few people leave. As the net mh/s fell to 280ish, and the difficulty is still dropping.

"proof-of-work" : 6.29899596,
"netmhashps" : 284.77875407,

...

"proof-of-work" : 6.20105252,
"netmhashps" : 309.68974165,

I think this maybe where a few people jump back on. And the network again finds equilibrium, between the now ever faster PoS and the slower PoW ;-)

Impressive to see NVC PoS difficulty go up so nicely. He did the right things early to fix some key issues. I'd like to do some of these tings as well, but as we get deeper into the block chain with more users, hard forks become increasing difficult to pull off.

According to my quick napkin calculation. At a difficulty of 7, HBN would need 2,000 mh/s to sustain it, if it were a PoW only coin.

Its close to the same, but slightly different on HBN, as both PoS and PoW share the same block generation time of 30 seconds.

There maybe some tweaks needed to the net mh/s difficulty, it seemed to be pretty accurate when the network was not getting so many PoS blocks.

Well, in NVC model system (as far as I know) it is used something like 6 PoS +2 PoW blocks per hour (I may be wrong with exact numbers, needs to be clarified...Edit: target is 144 PoS blocks per day and 48-144 PoW blocks, which means 6 PoS+ 2-6 PoW per hour), it is a target (may be even hardcoded) and both PoS and PoW difficulties try to match this parameters based on the speed of block finding by PoW (hashpower) and PoS (stakeweight).

This is how I see it's working, interesting how this implemented in HBN.

P.S. as you can see from Novacoin network difficulty charts http://charts.novaco.in/ there is no direct relation between PoW and PoS graphs, PoS difficulty is constantly growing, and PoW diff is fluctuating.

Or may be I am completely wrong and just don't understand well the design of such hybrid PoS/PoW systems  Grin

P.P.S. hmm now I see Tranz post at cryptocointalk.com "They are related in that they both change difficulty to try to get to 30 second block time." Interesting...

For instance, we jumped up pretty quickly from about 6 diff to mid 7 and the net mh/s went from 550 to 940.

proof-of-work" : 7.66032057,
netmhashps" : 940.02360905,

It then took a while to find the next block and even though the PoW diff went up  the net mh/s went down.

proof-of-work" : 7.84127652,
netmhashps" : 783.20991173,

I believe we are around mid 500s right now.

Guys, you should do some research. PoW and PoS have their own difficulties, 1st depends on hashrate, and 2nd on stakeweight of the network.

Yes they do have their own difficulty, but they are related in some way.  And the reason why I mentioned about PoS, is because I believe the hash rate reading is influenced by those spike... But I might be mistaken on that one, It might have been a bug or non related to HBN, I don't remember.

Maybe Tranz can clarify if the nethashrate reading is influenced by PoS spikes or it's pure PoW.

Number of blocks found over a set time plus the current difficulty is used to determine the hash rate. So when the PoW difficultly spikes due to many PoS blocks being found quickly, then it will appear as a huge influx of hash.  It should settle down quickly and get back to a more correct level begin reported.

If you try to simply calculate the hash rate based on PoW difficulty, this will be incorrect.

It appears that they do however have some type of reliance on each other.  Check out this thread for discussion about a previous event where a large stakeholder coming online caused PoW dif to go up. https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/5502-strange-diffnethash/

Um, who do you address your message to precisely? If it includes me, I for one DO know about that! For the 3rd time I repeat, I was talking only about the PoW hashrate fluctuations, and I wasn't referring to the PoW or PoS difficulty! If you'd checked from time to time your wallet console or any HBN pool dashboard during the last 24 hours, you'd have noticed these frequent PoW hashrate spikes (400... 500... 1000 Mh, then again 500... then again 1000... etc.). That's all I was asking about.

If anyone is going to the crypto-currency convention in New York this week, make sure to give a good shout out for HBN.  I am not going to be able to make it  Angry

Yes, I do know about difficulty spikes because of PoS, but I was talking only about the PoW hashrate, not the difficulty. And this is not a onetime hashrate increase, but frequent spikes from 500 and up to 1000 Mh of the hashrate.  This could be a multipool behavior, but HBN right now is not even close to the top by profitability. Why would multipools periodically switch to HBN? There's no reason. Also, this hashrate is not present on any of the available HBN pools. Maybe it's an ASIC farm in the setup process?

maybe KNCminer testing and mining these PoS coins before delivering their scrypt asic to customers

they make money on equipments and from mining and staking very smart

by the time all these miners receive their equipment i would expect HBN difficulty to spike above 20 and price should go to 0.001 to make it profitable to mine

Who is raping this coin recently? The hashrate fluctuates between 500 and 1000 Mh/s now!  Fucking multipools? Even more fucking ASICs? Angry

I can't say for sure, but it happened in the past, some big stakeholder opened their wallet and it made a huge spike in the diff on the network. check here around week 11 http://hobonickels.info/charts.php

but this looks more like an increase in PoW hashing power, IMO

The latest version is 1.3.6 beta, the links are somewhere in this thread and on http://www.hobonickels.info. As for the old checkpoint warning, you could try to reload the blockchain from scratch on your computer or replace it with a backup to speed things up.
