I’ve mined a little with my video card for scrypt based coins and I’ve been thinking about trying to actually make some money in the cryptocurrecny game.  However I am hesitant to buy an asic because they're stuck at being good for only a particular hash.  I like the video cards but they seem a lot more expensive and more power hungry, but at least they’re are more versatile and have the possibility of being useful for new currency hashes.

The more I’ve thought about it the more it bugged me until I decided that neither way would work for me.  I've got computer programming experience as well as microcontroller experience, particularly atmel.  I understand or at least had basic PLD's and logic in college and the reading I’ve done indicates that asics are super PLD microcontroller hybrids.

Now to my question, are there an open source asic hardware development communities.  I'm kinda stupid in my methods, I couldn't care less if I made money with my own or a community asic board I built myself because I would learn a lot and the community may be able to possibly upgrade the logic in the asic for new hashes scrypt-jane etc.  If I buy an asic from someone else or a better video card then I envision that one day they will both become a worthless paperweights.
