Not fun? Fluctuations, massive run ups, regulation, arrests, exchanges freezing, massive drops.

Its good, popcorn eating fun, if you ask me.

another huge price run up would be fun

I think the opposite. A huge price drop would be fun to watch.

good point, I would like to see that so I can scoop up some cheap coins

Bitcoin fans aren't having any fun.

Those who base their involvement in anything purely on 'having fun' usually does not last very long. And how much fun you have, is up to yourself. Bitcoin will die or survive on its own merits.

For those of you who don't know, Dogecoin's market cap recently passed Peercoin's, making it the third highest among mineable coins. It hasn't fully solidified itself in that position yet but is poised to do so, having seen huge gains in what is a bear market for most cryptocurrencies.  You can say what you want about Dogecoin (and I think it's a worthless scamcoin myself) but you can't deny that the amount of fun that its community members seem to have contributes to its success. With Charlie Shrem's arrest, the decline in price, the Mt. Gox fiasco, the ban in Russia, and other events in a seemingly endless string of bad news, Bitcoin fans aren't having any fun. The exuberance of the 2013 bubble is entirely gone. There might be another bubble soon but it'd be nice if we could have things to keep people engaged even when the price isn't soaring. So what can the Bitcoin community do to entertain the general public as much as Dogecoin is?

Do we need an animal mascot? Should we have a Bit-chan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_anthropomorphism)? It seems like one already exists (http://www.bitcoin-chan.com) but I think the design is ugly and there was seemingly no community involvement. Stuff like bringing a Bitcoin banner to the Superbowl or putting a flag in space is great but we need stuff that anybody can be involved in. The great thing about the doge meme is that it doesn't require much of anything to participate.

People seem to think that Bitcoin has lost its soul. How can we prove them wrong? Dogecoin's rise proves that, at least in the short term, technology is not all that matters for a cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is becoming associated entirely with a very sterile, corporate image that I don't think really reflects the whole community. How do we fix this?

I've been into Bitcoin for four years. The community is still as entertaining and interesting as it's ever been.

As for the string of bad news I'm pretty sure Russia also banned Dogecoin too and the Gox fiasco also applies to Alts because malleable transactions affect them as well. I think you've mistaken the exuberance Alts are feeling for sticking their head in the sand

More whales? That might make things "fun."

Personally, I don't think Bitcoin needs any type of "fun" injected into the system. Sure gimmicks would be nice, and the added attention would be great to have, but it always acts like a double-edged sword. Bitcoin is finally stepping out of the stages of "infancy" and starting to show signs of maturing into its own market. I think more than fun, Bitcoin needs more and more infrastructure.

Sure there is a lot of hype surrounding DOGE because of how "fun" it is, but in the long-term, it takes much more than that.

By allowing fun. That's really all you need to do. The Reddit-ban on memes was one of the worst decisions ever made by the mods over there. And the downvoting of funny comments by the community doesn't exactly help either.

What do you define as fun? If not much happens for a week or two, people start to panic when they see the price remaining stable or falls. People who are in Bitcoin for the long haul rather than a quick return on their investment shouldn't be affected. Sure, this year has gotten off to a slow and arguably bad start, but I'm sure they'll be plenty of excitement and price increases sometime this year when more merchants start accepting it and Bitcoin ATMs start popping up everywhere and who knows what else. Bitcoin is still pretty new and it's going to be a bumpy ride with a lot of struggles along the way, especially with the media slandering it everytime something minor happens and it gets blown out of proportion. If people want fun, they can stick with their Dogecoin, but I'm sure there will be a time when people get bored of that too, especially when they release they're not going to become rich off it.

I feel you pain (or panic) about the glowing sentiment for bitcoin having faded a lot in the last month or so, but you have to realize that this is all a necessary part of the life cycle of bitcoin. If rises to the next order or magnitude and people get excited for it "OMG it just went over $1/10/100/1000!!!!" and then it all settles down for a bit before we hit the next big boom.
