It is quite possible to prevent hackers from hacking an account by adhering to some basic principle like, do not save your passwords to browser,  do not share account with someone or better still allow someone to login to their account on your phone or web enabled device also, do not click on sites you do not have business with, enable a 2factor authentication for sites. With these and more tips one should be able to secure an account for as long as adherence is applied. Thanks

Don't reveal your email address in public, to avoid or reduce receiving many scam phishing attempts, and never trust links in your messages.

In addition to dkbit98's advice, in order to not publicly show your address, in the settings of your personal account, check the box to hide your mail.

This will save you from a lot of spam, which can send you a lot of phishing, and will also stop tempting those who want to try to hack your account.

In my little time here, I have seen that there is a great mix of knowledge here. I have been victim to loss of account due to hackers on some other platforms I have been on, and will like ideas on how to secure this my account here on this platform. There is a certainty that there are others who share same concern and will benefit from the answers that will be shared. What can we do to secure our account?
Sincerely you said the Truth because, their is some factors that can make your account to be hacked, i can say one of the major reason this happened is because of review of emails password and inactive or inaccurate of securing your email, and in addition, your account password been reviewed also to someone, actually if someone have access to your account details, it's very obvious that the account can be changed without knowing or penetrating to your email. Lastly, creating account without a valid email,  that gives the hackers the deemed opportunity to uproot your password..so in all ramifications, be curious and consciousness of your details.

What can we do to secure our account?
For all your accounts (including bitcointalk) you should use unique and strongly generated password, and never use it on multiple websites.
Best thing you can do is storing all your passwords in KeePass or some other open source password managers.
Don't reveal your email address in public, to avoid or reduce receiving many scam phishing attempts, and never trust links in your messages.
I know from personal experience that scammers can send you PM in forum with phishing links that steals your login detials.
If you are adding 2FA in your email accounts make sure it's not connected with your phone number.

You are still new on here, and as Newbie your account does not worth much, probably not so interested in hackers taking someone's fresh account.
you definitely need to have some kind of verification, with which you will be able to prove the original owner of the account. You got the best suggestion to sign a message on your Bitcoin address, I would also suggest one more possibility, verify your account through the unofficial Bitcointalk Discord server Bitcointalk Party - Discord server
I saw some of the BTT moderators there and I believe that you will get the quickest reaction in case of a problem.

What can we do to secure our account?
If you have taken care of your social media such as facebook, twitter or promiment website such as Yahoo,Google and other known sites. Then its the same as protecting your account here. Avoid malicious site that has malware and get layers of security like 2fa.

Most got hacked due to their careless of visiting harmful site and eventually lead to a hacked. You said you been hacked before it means you already learn the hard lesson.

Use a strong password (only assigns it for your Bitcointalk account) and stake your Bitcoin address there.
  • [GUIDE] How to Create a Strong/Secure Password
  • To stake a Bitcoin address here, you must assign a specific wallet that should be emptied to sign a message. Additionally, make sure you back up that wallet and can recover it from your back up. It's helpful in case you need to sign a message from it, in order to prove ownership.

Sheeesh! This made me remember what happened to this account of mine back in 2020. Read that thread I linked as many replies there helped me secured not just my account but also my machine as well.
It was a panic moment for me to be honest when I found out that some random dude from Turkey just posted some scammy stuffs using my own account. I was worried at most that my other files in my old machine could get compromised and thank goodness that it did not happen lol.

First and foremost, I would like you to please note that you are not the only person who has been victim of cyber crime. It is unfortunately a fact that all of us have been victims at some point or the other of online criminal activities. This is even more prevalent in our crypto world. Security remains one of the biggest challenges for everyone and one of the most important areas of focus and priority for the crypto community in particular.

The most important thing to protect your account from hacking is to set up two-step authentication on your account and a strong password. A strong password will contain a mixture of letters, numbers and special characters. It should be lengthy and should not have any words repeated from a previous password. A strong password prevents a hacker from being able to enter your account but remember that it cannot stop a hacker from getting access to your email account and use that to hack your account. Never re-use a password, a hacker can pick up your password from somewhere else and use it to log in into your account. This is a very important point. Beware of email phishing scams. Emails purporting to be from a crypto-related email provider or exchange pretending to be asking for a password. Avoid clicking on links or opening attachments in emails.

These are just a few things that come to mind right now, but of course , I cannot know all the vulnerabilities out there so you should do your due diligence. Stay safe.

Do not use your forum email account to register on other websites and platforms, you should obviously have multiple emails, do so if you do not, and then 'dedicate' one solely for your forum account here.
Well, I don't see how that's going to be a problem. I think the salient thing should be for the user to put up a very strong password for the email address and every site one registers on and make sure not to log into a phishing site. Bookmark the sites you visit from original sources as that will ensure you're interacting with the original source.

It would also be much better if you avoid using a public wifi to access your account
This is very sound an advice. No one should think they want to save data or money by using public WiFi. It's not advisable and it could expose one's secret and private information. If you must use WiFi, let it be with casual stuff and sites you're searching.

What is the implication if I don't have a dedicated email address for my forum account? You may consider it to be safe, but I don't think so. I use my main and regular email for my bitcointalk account. By this,  if anyone has access to my email, it will be very difficult to know that I used same for my bitcoin forum. This is because I only recieve a message from bitcoin forum only when I am sent a message and it doesn't happen often. So, hundreds of messages covers the message from bitcoin forum.
But if a dedicated email is used, definitely all the messages in the email would be from bitcoin forum which will be a clear indication of how important the bitcoin forum and email is to you.

What I consider not do is using same password as my forum password in other third party apps.

Op, in addition of the above solutions given, ensure you access bitcointalk.org from only devices you control. Avoid accessing the forum from random devices  and consider not to save your password in a browser.

In addition to the advice you already got; Keep back ups for everything - Your email and profile passwords and your staked address seed phrase. This way even if you lose access to your device which contains your wallet, email and forum profile, you can recover everything back.

Also, avoid phishing links, preferably, click to always stay logged in. And do not enter your forum log in details on any third party platform.

Make sure you use a strong password for both here and your email account and make sure you stake an address you can control and one that's kept secure (eg on hardware or an encrypted wallet on a device that only have trusted/well known software installed).

A strong password should be something that's hard to guess by anyone and could be randomised to do this. I'd recommend searching for advice on making a strong password, if you don't have any ideas on what to use you can use the first 6-8 words of a newly generated random bip39 mnemonic (from a trusted wallet software and one that won't be used to store funds) as a password.

Since you are referring to this platform", Bitcointalk, I’d get acquainted with the recovery procedure in case you lose control of your account (first thread below), and then sign a message from a bitcoin address, as indicated in the instructions on the second link below.

Read through this thread:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/recovering-hackedlost-accounts-5089777

And sign a bitcoin message here:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/stake-your-bitcoin-address-here-996318
See also this post for the procedure.

Obviously, beforehand use a strong password and make sure you control your forum's email account (consider adding 2FA to it too - the email I mean).

1. Use 2fa
2. Use a secure password
3. Don't leave funds on exchange unnecessarily, and store your funds using a reputable hardware wallet from Ledger[1] or Trezor[2]. Only leave funds on exchanges if you're actively trading.

Also, learn about the typical scams[3], so you wouldn't fall for them.
