Ah yes. I started out by reading documentation which was only months old, but already completely obsolete (unbeknownst to me.) bitcoind had a CPU miner built in and I used it. I got kicked out of several mining pools for 'inefficiency' in short order before I fully comprehended what was going on.
So, I guess technically I got my first (tiny fraction of a) bitcoin in this manner, but it was such a tiny fraction that I didn't even bother to try to transfer it. I was paranoid about the block chain size from early on in my research on Bitcoin. I've always tried to avoid piss-ant transactions on general principle. A hold-over from needing to pay attention to resources from my exposure to computers in the mid 80's I suppose.
