It seems you cannot overvolt 7900 in BAMT/Linux. More details here, although I want to undelvolt, for overvolt it's the same:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/7970-bamt-undervolt-pls-help-151092
I mean if you have a lower voltage card you can overvolt by writing a higher voltage bios.

You have to add some DLL's into the Afterburner folder and make some changes to the .cfg files.

Here's a link that explains how:

http://www.overclock.net/a/getting-started-with-radeon-hd-7970-overclocking

I've been able to get #1 card up to 1250 and #2 up to 1300 using water cooling, over-volting and 3 radiators with dual pumps in push-pull.

This got me up to 700MHash/s and bumped me up to #15 on btcmine's top miners list, up from 45 (and climbing).

http://btcmine.com/toplist/

You can save a little juice by cranking the memory clock down as far as it will go. Memory clock isn't very important for mining since hashing doesn't require as much RAM transfer as gaming.

How to overclock: Bump up the clock a little at a time until it wigs out, then bump up the voltage until it's stable. Keep doing so until adjusting the clock and voltage higher no longer results in a stable rig. Then scale back to the last good configuration.

Watch your temps until they level off.

Thanks for the info; it will certainly come in handy!

I'm also building a water cooled rig. It should be complete in a few day.  Would you mind posting a pic of your rig?

Why would I buy an 7970 which performs around 700 MHash/s if a old 5970 does the same for less than half the money ?

Where are you getting 5970s for $200?

I have seen some sell for 160 euro at ebay germany few days ago. But its still a dinosaur, consumes power like crazy, and get really hot in the process. And did i mentioned the noise Smiley ? I got a few of those, I dont even enter the room where they are

When you occasionally game on you machine or when you want to have good resell value on your card.

You just answered your own question: 5970s are old, usually out of warranty, and if you've been mining on them for any amount of time, you're just asking them to fail. 7970s are newer, smaller, can reach some amazing efficiency numbers, and can be bought new for under $400, or used for $300.

Stop using AMDoverdrive, Use MSIafterburner, go into it's config file and:
Seek UnofficialOverclockingEULA field and add following text:
I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path

Once you do this, MSIafterburner should allow you to change your voltages, I have never been unable to alter voltages using MSIa, Although i hear that certain GPU's have somekind of built in cap, Something that you can fix with a Bios Flashing of your GPU

You could also bios flash your GPU to overclock it, But this is like... Last resort

He's using BAMT. How do you propose using MSI AB in BAMT?

Weird. I don't change voltage on any of mine on linux and just set the engine clock to whatever I want just from cgminer. Overvolting is about the only kind of overclocking which is dangerous and hugely wasteful powerwise. Some were stable at 1145 while one was stable at 1200.

I am not much of a linux expert, under windos its idiot proof but - some people said that card is voltage locked in newer revisions. My reference cards are all powercolor and club3d, but none is a GHZ edition. I can send you the Bios from gigabyte (runs at 1.175), but you risk killing the card, or at least one bios.

For past 1125, you will need at least 1.175 or even 1.2V. When you send me the model I will see if I can send you the bios at 1.175 or 1.25V

The model is R7970-2PMD3GD5/OC.  Thank you!

I currently have one MSI Afterburner 7970 mining away in BAMT.  How can I overclock the core clock past 1125Mhz?

Can you tell me which card is it exactly?

That's actually part of the problem.  I cant set the voltage past 1.17.

I've been using AMDOverdrive to do the overclocking, but core speed wont exceed 1125Mhz and Voltage wont pass 1.17.
