Indian Government to allow crypto tokens, but not cryptocurrency
The government is considering launching crypto tokens for financial transactions in the country, even as the existing ban on cryptocurrencies is likely to continue.
A committee set up by the finance ministry, under the chairmanship of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) secretary, is reportedly working on a set of regulations and roadmap to allow certain crypto assets to be used in India. Once the draft regulations are ready and legally vetted, it will be tabled before Parliament, sources said.
DEA secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, who is heading the committee, is quoted by DNA as saying: “The committee is studying the possibility of using cryptocurrencies or crypto technology (distributed ledger technology) for financial transactions and also what kind of regulations are needed for that…[while] the currency is totally banned, the committee is discussing its other usage and how it can be mainstreamed in India.”

And while that process remains in flux, a company tied to the brothers has won another U.S. patent related to the creation of exchange-traded products tied to cryptocurrencies and digital assets.

The patent, awarded on June 19, details a method "for providing an exchange-traded product holding digital math-based assets" as well as the issuance of shares tied to that ETP. It adds to the body of intellectual property the Winklevosses have sought to obtain, though it's not entirely clear when or how the concepts will be applied to real-world products.
An ETP, such as an exchange-traded fund (ETFs), is a type of security, the price of which is derived from other investment instruments - in this case, cryptocurrencies.

ARCHANGEL has a proposed timeframe of 18 months. It is set to prototype a distributed ledger technology (DLT) service that will "collect robust digital signatures derived from digitized physical, and born-digital content," according to Green.
The research is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, which invests more than £800 million a year in fields such as mathematics, materials science, and information technology.

The National Archives (TNA), the official record-keeper of the UK government, is investigating the use of blockchain for records sharing.
The research project, dubbed Archangel, is being led by the University of Surrey and involves partners such as the Open Data Institute. Among other goals, the initiative will explore the extent to which blockchain can address pressing questions related to archive management.
In a blog post published Tuesday, Alex Green, the Archives' digital preservation services manager, wrote:
