No I dont escrow anymore.
Does anyone know how much would it take me to download the full wallet from 0? I have only 20mb/s of internet connection, is it going to take like a year?

Certainly not a year no. Even slow old laptops where the bottleneck is the CPU only take up to a week.

Move On !!!!!!
This is the stupid part of this whole technology. Imagine if VISA had to tell their customers to download something, that would take them 1 week and loads of bandwidth, before they could use the service. Yes, I know there are other alternatives to using the technology, but it's hardcore to explain this to a newbie.

In countries with capped internet and slow data lines, this is not even a option.

Mate if you only had one wallet and that was a Bitcoin Core then yes, this would definitely be a stupid part of the technology.

Instead you have about 20 wallets for each and every need! In such circumstances, you really don't have right to fall anything stupid!

It is possible to copy wallet.dat from Bitcoin Core without syncing it up to date and use it in another wallet instead for quick acces? For example some in simplified validation wallet (Electrum, Multibit)?

Not directly, you would have to export (via bitcoin core) or extract (e.g. with pywallet) the private keys first. Afterwards you can import them in any programm that allows this. E.g. Multibit HD no longer allows importing keys (Classic did) and Electrum 2 forces you to create a different wallet for the imported keys. This is mainly to make it blatantly obvious that imported keys are not covered by the seeds.

Visa would ask you to download a crapton of data if you wanted to be an actual part of the network though. If you dont want to be an actual part of the bitcoin network, but only use it you dont have to download the entire blockchain either. There are other clients that do not require this.

Beyond Imagination
It's the verification part most resource consuming. Once downloaded, you would never want to do that again since next time it will take much longer due to the increase in average block size

I just bought an new PC with an i7 16gb ram and it took roughly about 45hrs to download the whole blockchain with bitcoin core.  it sound terribly dodgy also to get your block chain from anywhere other than the official bitcoin core.  maybe im wrong but i would have thought that this type of download is vulnerable to manipulation....?

The data is still verified locally, this is also the reason why newer versions are faster. They can download and verify at the same time. If you download via torrent first and verify later you cant.

You can keep your bitcoins where they are and upgrade, they wont go anywhere. As far as syncing goes, it really depends on your internet connection and PC.
The last time i downloaded whole chain it took me two days to sync it.
Have you considered alternate wallets ? After you sync, maybe it would be smart for you to switch to electrum wallet instead of core, especially if your net speed is slow.

cheers

give me your cryptos
It took me 5 days on my pc to download the whole blockchain, and one week and three days for my laptop. It really depends on your internet speed. I don't even bother with the blockchain anymore, I just use smaller, lighter, or online wallets.

You can actually download the block chain separately....do a google..then you can download from faster servers and then just replace your bootstrap.dat file.

I've done it with LiteCoin and FeatherCoin,  I've not opened my BTC wallet in a long long time.

Please dont do that. This advice is as old as bitcoin 0.9. Newer versions (>0.10.) sync faster witout the bootstrap. Whether or not other coins have implemented this patch is irrelevant.

You can stop at any time, upgrade and continue where you left off. Its hard to give you a prediction on how long it will take you because it greatly depends on your internet connection, disk and cpu speed. The last time I synced my server (100 Mbit/s, single core [bottleneck], SSD) it took me 3 days.
