I read some articles before that more than a million coins has been lost and these coins cannot be used unless the owner will find his digital key.

Maybe around two millions. But most Bitcoins lost should be the early ones when the price was very low, now with much higher price people tend to secure their private keys more. Thus the amount of lost Bitcoins should not increase much anymore in my opinion.

The question is whether the Satoshi million Bitcoins are lost, or somebody still have the private keys. I guess either these Bitcoins move or after many years it become clear these Bitcoins are lost.

The crazy thing about the current cryptocurrency system is that it's pretty easy to lose crypto if you're not careful. I hope some of these usability based blockchain startups will solve this issue in the near future.

Lol, lots of funny figures here. Mine was $30 worth of Bitcoin...was my first ever Bitcoin. It wasn't exactly lost... like losing the coin to fraudsters or something. Just that things didn't work out as planned. I ignored and move on.

Ya I would have to agree that it's around the 2-3 million mark, maybe even more as a lot of mistakes have been made on the Bitcoin network when it comes to storing them and sending them.

How many bitcoins do you think have been lost forever?

I personally think its around 3 to 4 million.
If you will research the top richest bitcoin wallet addresses at google , you will find some of them are now inactive but we cannot be sure that this coins are considered lost since they are just inactive. I also think that you should rename your thread to how much coins that have been inactive for a couple years.
In my own opinion there is no lost coins. They are just inactivr that maybe someday it will be active again.

I think we will never know the answer exactly. The address full of btc which is not used for a long time maybe in a vault of a richman and he doesn't care just for now or he forget it there. There are lots of possibilities valid for other btc addresses.

Less than 1 million.

Lol, even Satoshi`s stash is more worth than that.
Check this list - https://bitinfocharts.com/ru/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html
You can find a lot of wallets that havent been active since 2010-2011.
There is high chances that owner is dead or lost their access to wallet.

well since this topic was posted in 2016 i think the bitcoins were lost is now higher than 4million in terms of bitcoins but we can't tell how many millions of bitcoins were lost and also this question boggles in my mind, does bitcoins were mined by satoshi is considered lost or not? considering that he was mining bitcoins before he was left the bitcoin world

Im going with the choice of two to three million. Because i have seen a lot of horror stories from various people with various reasons. Such as house burning, devices malfunctioning, storages being lost, wrong copying of private keys, forgetting, and more. The list really goes on. But i think this is just when bitcoin is cheap. Because I don’t think people today would be as careless as people back then with bitcoins. Considering it’s current price today on the market. Although there are people who still tend to be clumsy, I don’t think the numbers are still as huge as the numbers back then.

Infact  I can say the presice amount of bitcoin I have lost, most of the ones I lost is due to ignorance at the early time due to wrong form filling, not copying link e.t.c I almost got frustrated but I learnt, now I'm better.
