Thanks for sharing the code but for me using a picture would be better rather than an avatar. There is no harm if one uploads a picture directly and so no clue why this forum does not allow it.

First find some ASCII art of whatever you want to be your avatar.

-snip-

Which you are able to put into your signature, thus getting you an avatar. You're welcome!

Thanks for sharing the trick.

Would this work with 'Personal Message' or 'Location' field?
I don't want to mess up my signature space and also it would be cool to have the avatar under username rather than under my posts.

No you can put in your personal message only a cert number of characters , and obviously the bbcode tag  will not function.

Correct. I tried it before reading your post, but failed as expected.

Those fields accept only certain number of characters and as you said, BB Codes don't work.

Yeah but keep in mind that if you ever wanted to sell the account then accounts with Avatars are less desirable.  Or at least it used to be like that because you couldn't change avatars.. not sure if that's still a thing

One can hack a forum uploading an avatar picture?

Yeah, one time someone found an exploit where he embed javascript (I think) code into a picture which he used for his avatar, and the javascript took the forum down.

So do you have to host the picture somewhere then ref from that???

Nope, there is no way to get a picture avatar any more.

You are wrong, in the new forum software it can be possible to "have an avatar". (or maybe I didn't understand what do you mean).

I was refering to this version. I am not actually sure whether the new forum will have avatars or not.

The new forum is coming at an unknown time and the avatar requirement is only something that is tentative (although maybe theymos can confirm that the avatar feature has already been coded and is functioning).

Either way it is not currently possible to get an avatar
