Holding is not really the best strategy as recommended by you. Traders have been doing shorting to make good money on daily basis and they have been successful with this.
Holding works for coins that have good market cap and would increase in a stable way over time. For example BTC and ETH. For other coins, holding is risky and it is better to do shorting more than holding long term.
Buying for a long term is a good method but you also need to check and look at your portfolio..You should check your altcoins once a day at on coinmarketcap.
