I'm doing a course on cybersecurity, and there is a particular topic that caught my attention which I would like to share with you all. I know many of us make mistakes when setting up passwords for our different online platforms. Did you know that you are the first line of defense against cyber criminals or cyber attacks? How you set up your password will determine if your data is safe from hackers or scammers. There are techniques you can use to make sure your personal information is kept secure.

I want to emphasize on password creation. How you create your password matters a lot:

1: When setting up your password, do not use your name or common dictionary words.

2: Use special characters like @$&#%# etc

3:Use passwords with more than 10 characters.

4: Make sure all your online accounts have unique passwords. If you use the same password for different accounts, it will make your data vulnerable to scammers.

Note: If you have too many passwords, use a password manager. This will help to store and conceal your passwords.
Omo thanks for the information, though it may sound as if na normal thing oo but as e be for now so many things dey play for people mind everyday and dem dey forget their selves especially when it comes to password management. I don dey in a situation where I think say am very certain say I no change my password but not knowing say everything na just mismatch as I was totally confused and put another password thinking I don too use one same password.

It is a nice topic though it is now common to everyone.using the same password for multiple accounts is very risky and most internet pages now, if you enter a password or an email that is already used somewhere else you will be notified.

The Idea of having an password manager is also risky it is not wise to entrust your personal password to someone rather you can write it down in a paper and look for a safe place to keep it keeping it with a person will be very easy to break into your account humans these days are not to be trusted especially when it happens to be finances.
Actually it's not bad to use one password to secure all your datailes, as long as your password doesn't contains your name or any dictionary words it's secured. A password is what we shouldn't try to forget, because there are something that do not permits resetting of password because of their security reasons, and it's stated there when you are setting the password.
It's not also good to be changing passwords all the times, there there are people who always change passwords or uses different passwords to secure their account but surprisingly don't know how they managed to forget their password. Password is a thing that supposed to be installed in every ones brain because it's not like seed phrase, it's something that you setup by your self.

A lot of websites, apps or anything that requires passwords this days surely do require your passwprd to be atleast 8 and above. The  second part is a very popular suggestion that I have noticed but sometimes people do ignore it and continue with making their passwords vulnerable, adding signs and symbols in your passwords helps in making your passwords more difficult to crack by hackers.

True lot is cyber sites and platforms has realized that users profiles in their platforms has been possibly be attacked and compromised due to fact that profile holders has been using vulnerable security keys to their accounts, this has layed some emphases for the platform domain to suggest some strong security keys for users or likely, you'd be guided on layouts of how you can create stronger security by yourself such us using upper and lower keys including numbers and symbols.
You'll also be directed not to use keys they're similarly to your profile details just as Op has made mentioned.
That's typically because intentional hacker doesn't use an IQ to guess your security keys with your profile details.

How would it make your password vulnerable to scammers to detect that you use the same password for different accounts, what if you sign up on 1000 platforms with 1000 different passwords, do you think it's easy to remember them on each account, I don't think it's possible doing that except you enable to save the password to the platform on your browser.

Also, what if you sign up on 1000 platforms with one password but enable advanced security settings like phone number verification code, 2fa, fingerprint authentication, is it good this way to safe yourself?

But is this password manager thing not at risk too? Speak of having different passwords is a good idea though but what if one forget to remember the password too,  I prefer it should be written on a book and kept in a safe place where it will not be tempered with. Also your choice of passwords are cool I  think, I will go with that method of password, because lots of people have lost their valuable to fraudster as a result of insecurity and at times this scammers will really call you over the phone with some fake reasons and requesting you send them your password to rectify the issue facing your account and they sound so real and serious to distinguished from. I have received a call from someone  giving a complain about my bank and requesting I should text him by BVN. Just once I knew it was a scam I ignored without wanting to be told. There are other means they can get access to someone's account.

This password something has made many people lose their assets completely because they don't show concerning how to use complicated password or a password that could be too hard for scammer to remember and guess so easily. Most people are victims of using same password everywhere on net without knowing some of these platform steal person password from there ends to access users details online.

Creating passwords especially different passwords for me sometimes dey hard sha, the way everything don dey  now you’re required to set a password first before accessing any website or app and sometimes if you fail to remember the password na another Wahala. Some app need password every time before you fit use the app and the same time password na wetin scammers dey find, wetin I don observe na app or site dey usually give description how the password go dey for example numbers, Punctuation marks, lengthy characters etc, it’s left for you to follow instruction and save the password.

To protect our password na one of the sole responsibility of a bitcoiner and how to take setup a strong password nai matter alot.Hackers dey find am easy to access weaker password pass strong password.Op wetin I grab most for your content na use special characters; special characters nai be the punctuation marks and other symbols then use password more than 10 words also dey important at least 12+ words wey mix with special characters.Even if a bitcoiner use 12+ words without special characters ehn password still dey vulnerable to hackers.E dey advisable to manage your passwords for password manager or store dem offline but storing passwords offline means say the person suppose dey mindful because fire fit burn the paper or it can be destroyed by flood or even accessed by offline hackers.

Although I don't support the idea of saving your passwords in a password manager, I prefer we keep them in an offline books or papers where its more safer.
If you get plenty passwords, a password manager is advisable if you do not want to write it down on a paper or in a book. We get different types of password managers, and if you use the one wey dey open source and offline, your passwords dey safe there if you no make any mistake. KeePass na good example of such a password manager, you go fit store all your passwords for one database, and the only thing wey you go back up na your master key, you fit also use KeepPass offline.
Okay, I never hear about that one and as far as na open source and offline, I believe say e go dey safe so anybody wey want safe fit safe there.

You fit give me their official website make I download am for my pc, because experience na the best teach make I experience am too.

Its a bad idea for me to use a password manager because they make use of a central server to host all entries concerning their users request for the use of their service, you have indirectly shared your password with a third party institution which is not perfect enough in taking control measures for the safety of the password we use, we can have a duplicate copy of our password stored in a place where we can only be the one to have access to it, i also don't buy the idea of using a google backup service for your password as well, all these could lead to a penetration of ones privacy when we are set for an attack or further investigation.

I was thinking that using a password manager is even a risk level on its own and the password managers could easily have access to ones account despite the security help it offers.

Also, You must have heard of CTEM which means Continuous threat exposure management. It is an approach in cybersecurity that serves the function of continuously identifying, assessing and mitigating potential risks posed by cyber threats.

It is when there's the constant monitoring of an organization's digital assets and network systems as well as their potential vulnerabilities. An educated individual can use this knowledge to protect their personal data online and it would be of immerse benefit.

• There's also the use of Stealth addresses which is popular for some big investors and it is used as it concerns the issue of hackers gaining access to digital wallets and stealing cryptocurrency coins.

Stealth Addresses work to make crypto transactions as anonymous as possible and although it can ensure strict anonymity that can be as a deceptive tactic, they serve to provide an extra layer of security for cryptocurrency users. One could potentially use stealth addresses to receive funds without revealing your personal wallet address.

Using a password Manager is a very nice option like just as you stated it. There are so many people who are of the opinion that their password don't need to follow a particular pattern due to the fact that if eventually one get exposed then all the rest are at threat too so for this kind of mentality then that's when you basically need the services of a password Manager.

I like the fact that you brought up this matter on this Local board now that many of us have been nonchalant about our passwords and end up not protecting them the way they should be. Data protection is oftentimes a topic that has been undermined my many users of the internet, however, it is the most crucial aspect of the internet that we must not take for granted. I've seen friends that have stored their passwords with their mobile number and end up being hacked because some people out there are watching over those information to gain loopholes that will give them access to your account or information.

What I've noticed as a solution to those issues, is that many websites and apps are now making it compulsory for users to insert not less than 8 characters with a mixture of alphabets and numbers as well as characters like *,#,% and, @ etc. This method has helped a lot of us maintain stronger passwords but made many to oftentimes forget and change their passwords more frequently.

As a result, instead of saving it in password managers as OP suggested, one should write them down in a sheet of paper or diary book and hide it somewhere safe or snap it and save it somewhere on your smartphone.

I like the example you have given to us, it reminds us about our personal security. Its always pays to protect your assets, if it's an online asset. Our passwords is a thing that need to use different characters that is 100% different from words on dictionary or names if we uses those things as our passwords or makes hackers to login to our account from their end.

This part of the thread nai caught my attention. E dey very important to click save when your dey register a website because sometimes as you just finished di registration to login na wahala so if you save am then you go fit go to save password and retrieve di account. And for di special characters, dis days almost all di website we dey register dey ask them.

But e no good to discuss something like this in the public because dis one na private matter and if you come discuss dem here those criminals will use them to hack maore accounts. Avoid disclosing your secret information in the public.

Am ok will all when you listen because all those can be sure that all of your information is secure, but for these two, I will like to ask for clarification, although to some they will say you have cleared everything at the end, but in not all places that you will have the chance to put more than 4-6 characters, but I see you are emphasising 10 or even more characters. I will like you to explain that for me because you mentioned that you are studying cyber security.

The second question that I have is: why is it necessary to give you a different password? Because even if we have a password manager, when we lose it, it is like we lost all of our secrets password, or, let's say, if someone has access to that, he will be able to know all of our secrets, but at least if we can use a single password, it will be simpler to cram and no one will have access to it.

This aspect of password security is very important. I noticed of lately people do not really take their time to use mixed characters for their passwords, they use single words and no signs or symbols attached which makes their account vulnerable to hackers.

The use of mixed characters would be very difficult for hackers to crack and the longer the safety span of the account with mixed characters. Lastly, it is not advisable to store password on cloud or using of password manager. Just like the other comment says that it is most preferable you write down your password somewhere you could easily access it and only you should know about it for the safety of your assets and account.
