I was reading on the comments saying that bitcoin 1.0 will be the end of bitcoin. I also think it will happen for so long. Everybody is saying about the last bitcoin will be mined in a hundred of years. I would like somebody to tell me about how mining works.

Since we have taken the path of going by 0.01, I think we'll always stay under version 1.0. We'll probably increase that number ever, and we'll end up with numbers like Bitcoin Core 0.534.

I think if bitcoin will go mainstream, there will be a much fuster development and maybe we reach 1.0 in 10-20 years.

I second this, but on the other hand, mainstream adaptation might not happen until we reach 1.0.
Think about it, after the hype of continued development games was over, the interest in such games was lost quickly as well.

People want finished products and giving the client the 1.0 trademark could possibly help it becoming mainstream more quickly.
Numbers can influence people a lot, although that number isn't based upon anything.

A good example of the influence of numbers is pricing.
For example, 9/10 people would rather buy a cookie for $0,99 then a cookie that's $1,00.

For the best future of BTC, I believe they should release a 1.0 version as soon as possible.

I think, any 1.x version will signal, that the protocol is fixed ... but as we know now, it isn't, and likely will never be. So, the moment there is a 1.x out there, it will foreshadow a much more capable 2.x on the horizon.

The key be that most computers in the world still run 20 year old hardware, a 2.0 version would be great to see in our time & or our future generations (when the hardware of the world can handle such GUI interfaces ).

Ok, I like the idea that bitcoin will never reach version 1.0,
and therefor will never be seen as a finished product.

The zero at the beginning of 0.x.x.x has lots of symbolic meaning.  Smiley
I hope it will stay with us forever.

Actually bitcoin 1.0 might happen because as brilliant as the developers are, it's difficult imagining how the blockchain would be like if 5billion people were spending btc.
We just might arrive at btc 1.0 25 years from now.

It will be good if this forum's staff will answer in this question but my opinion is that if we look that bitcoin is created 7 years ago and from that to now we have it's 0.13.1 version, which is also very good and secure, and we will continues like this, I think there is no need and also that won't happen in near future. It don't has many things to be added and it's even question how will look it's 0.2 version, nothing to say about 1.0

Bitcoin 1.0 probably won't happen in our lifetime.

I think it will happen in the next 15 years. I think bitcoin needs to achieve the following goals for it to happen:

  • Throughput that scales and that can exceeds Visa transactions
  • Better anonymity
  • Low cost per transaction probably less than 0.02$
  • Quantum computer resistant
  • Mining solution for Bitcoin going forward without block reward
I don't think it is possible to create  a Quantum computing resistant bitcoin in 15 years because quantum computers are not going to arrive that soon, while there are encryption algorithms which in theory could not even be solved by quantum computers, we will not be able to determine how much powerful a quantum computer actually is until a fully functional model is put to test.

Ok this is more of an speculation thread but im curious what people here think... what will Bitcoin 1.0 look like technically wise, and in what year do you expect we will reach 1.0? We will probably be wrong about a lot of things but it's fun to speculate.

I would hope that by then we have solved how to take Bitcoin to the next level in terms of dumbing it down as much as possible for the snapchat generation, and also the older people is also able to use it just like a tablet. (of course all the nice complex options can be unlocked for the power user)

People shouldn't be bothered if something goes off or onchain, it just has to work.

Default settings should be as private as possible for everyone, obfuscating amounts and ideally transactions "mixed" by default. People should not be bothered with coin control, selecting fees etc.

Sidechains are common and every relevant business has its own.

I don't know what else to say.
Bitcoin 1.0 will not happen. Trillions of money are in bitcoin. Yet bitcoin will last a hundred years from now, I don't think they would replace it as bitcoin 1.0

It wont  be  achievable  on   next 15 years   because  the things   you  listed  is  not achievable  on a  short period of time and  it would really require   sufficient years to  develop bitcoin even more. Bitcoin 1.0  is not  possible  for me  even though  bitcoin  would  be fully mined  but  as we all know  the last  bitcoin will be mined  took  hundred of  years. Are you sure  you are still  alive on that  year?

Danny is right. It won't happen in our lifetime because the last coin will be mined in the year 2140 or so. This means we all would be long dead by then.

We can speculate as much as we want but the truth is maybe our grand sons will see it and not us.

We probably will have 1.0 when all the bitcoins are mined up.

Satoshi wanted to go to 1.3 back in 2010...so who knows when the version will be 1.0:

Is it about time we lose the Beta?  I would make this release version 1.3.
