so, it's not like my wallet.dat HAS the coins, thery are in the network like in a bank and my wallet is like my credit card number, right?

I find it simpler to just regularly send my bitcoins to my mtgox account. I've got a yubikey which makes it more secure.

This reminds me... I made a backup of my wallet a few days ago, but when I needed it I had already forgotten the PW for the flash-drive, after some digging around I found a recovery key in an encrypted zip on my encrypted partition.  In short I've finally restored my wallet.  Grin

   Note: Some people forget really important things, I'm one of them. Embarrassed

May I suggest TAILS for the live CD/USB you are describing? http://tails.boum.org/

I don't have any experience running any bitcoin software on it but it seems like a good candidate :-)
