Wasn't going to read through 100 pages but this is much less tedious and just as secure. Keep an encrypted TrueCrypt volume on the same media as suggested by Op and you basically have the same solution without the extra hassle of a LiveCD/ISO/VM/whatever you're trying to do that you're not 100% comfortable with. I read a post on reddit just yesterday about "losing" 90 BTC and it seemed as if the OP wasn't comfortable or didn't have a clear understanding of how to do this method of a secure wallet. I only skimmed it, but losing 90 BTC at this point sucks.
I did something similar.
I saved the page "bitaddress.org" on a flash drive.
Unplugged Ethernet cable then I booted ubuntu liveCD
Opened the page I had on the flash drive and generated a wallet address and printed it.
Since this address has never been seen by a network it is secure.

This reminds me... I made a backup of my wallet a few days ago, but when I needed it I had already forgotten the PW for the flash-drive, after some digging around I found a recovery key in an encrypted zip on my encrypted partition. In short I've finally restored my wallet.
seems like a good idea, but I don't think it will be worth the effort for a lot of people
1. Boot to live CD
2. Use bitcoin to generate your wallet.dat and however many keys you want.
3. Extract the public AND private keys (well, when they finally merge the PULL request on github)
3a. on a separate sd card, store all your public keys so you can get to them later
4. PRINT the keys out on your printer, and leave some extra space and use a pen to copy them down again (printer ink can fade over years)
5. Put the keys in a security envelope, and then in a tamper-evident manila envelope.
6. Go get a 2"x5" safety deposit box at your local bank for $10/yr and put the envelope in there.
6a. (optional) include a small sd card with the wallet.dat and plaintext keys so it's easier than importing keys manually
7. Don't forget to pay the annual lease for the SD box (perhaps pay several years in advance?)

That's really not a bad system. Simply keeping your device offline is a good way to protect it from remote intrusion. Although don't you need to put that machine online to transfer coin from the account?
I just heard about the bitcoin android app though, makes me think a old android phone with no service plan (so offline) might mike a good mobile wallet. Of course assuming you have a wifi connection wherever you need to spend anything, you'd also need to use whatever wifi connection they have, and you really can't trust public wifi.
