looks like I will be busy figuring out the encription methods now. TrueCrypt....

Although it could take some time to master, what about just memorizing an address and its key?

The brain as a 100% secure wallet is a simple and intriguing possibility to me.

In posts like this that hold relatively essential information, but have 20+ pages of posts, how can we know whether we have the most up-to-date practices without reading through all the 'thanks-from-me-too' responses? It seems that a lot of relatively crucial information is stored here rather than on the wiki. Any suggestions on a way of having 'canonical' answers? Maybe a posting area where the OP can edit their post with any updated information?

I think keeping your wallet.dat or the total bitcoin map encrypted on a USB stick is one of the best ways to keep your wallet safe.

I have had great experience with securing my wallet through paper wallets with bitaddress.org and I highly recommend using it :-)

Wallet security is definitely crucial. I can see why they let you encrypt your wallet with the default client now.

I`m not 100% sure, but if every transaction is in block and every client have to download all blocks then we can always restore our account?
I imagine it this way:
- there is private key and corresponding btc adress
- any transaction need to be signed by sender using his priv key
- if receiver is not online transaction is done anyway - saved in block
- when receiver went online client is updating blocks and adding money to wallet

So, we can
- create own address like it is described there: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/vanitygen-vanity-bitcoin-address-generatorminer-v022-25804
- add generated priv key do wallet
- send some 0.01 to "activate" address in network

Then we can DELETE wallet.dat and when we need this BTC`s we just import priv key and client will "find" all BTC`s are on it?
Just keep priv key in safe place Ie crypt plain txt file and save on usb, send to friend, dropbox, anything. Just use STRONG password and not forget it

Because method from https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/pull-private-key-and-wallet-exportimport-8091 is not working on crypted wallet i made a simple application using one function from NamecoinGUI https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/namecoingui-with-bitcoin-support-v05018-48737

It is using RPC calls to read private key from wallet and import new address to wallet.

Bitcoin client NEED to be running!
Just need to fill fields and unlock wallet.
After unlock you can read privkey of your address or add new address entering generated privkey.
App is NOT saving anything on disk and NOT sending any data away.
Sources included.
Importing new key takes some time! Be patient and not kill app nor bitcoin client!
