I don't think we are saying to hold all. The main point is to keep the majority of your coins longterm.
Selling on the way up is the standard practice in the investment world.

True if you have a lot you can get profit and help others get coins. Price can't go up until things are more even and one person doesn't have 100k btc.

This is a very good point.  The extreme GINI coefficient in the economy strikes me as one of the largest threats.  After all Bitcoin derives a lot of it's strength from being the software that people willingly choose to run.  If relative latecomers cannot get in in a reasonable way that could be incentive to choose a different solution.

Lately I've just been selling at Coinbase for convenience.  I've no idea where the BTC goes.  Once I get comfortable that I've got what I need for some projects I have planned, maybe I'll switch over to trying to service whatever local demand there might be.  In significant sizes doing things locally is impossible, and it's always going to be a hassle which I may or may not enjoy.  Busy with other projects at the moment.

Whether legitimate or not, I consider being a 'hoarder' to have the benefit of dampening out fluctuation somewhat and providing some liquidity in times of need.  Certainly I felt that I was doing the economy a service by soaking up some liquidity back in late 2011.

Anyone who sells just because we reach $1000 is a limpdick... HODL OR DIE!

$1000 is NOTHING, if you sell you are giving away FREE coins.

Agreed. You only sell some at that level in order to buy back in and end up with more BTC. This will hit 10s of thousands within 2 years at the minimum.

Someone who happens to have a lot of BTC can both sell (at, say, 100x) and buy something which can be enjoyed, and also hodl a large number to enjoy the potential for even greater profits in the future.

There is no 'one-size-fits-all' since each person's situation is different.  I planned to 'HODL to the max' back in 2011 and continue to do so until 10x (if we made it that far) then take back my initial outlay.  The next sale would be at 100x (again, if we got there.)  It was always a giant low probability speculative play to me and I always was prepared to lose everything I put in.  These plans were formed as I was getting involved in the first place, and I stuck to them without paying a great deal of attention to timings and without boxing myself into some sort of a corner.

Bitcoin is still classified as 'experimental' and it is not anywhere near certain that it will do any particular thing in the future.  There are a lot of factors and unknowns.  I personally would feel like a world class idiot of the whole thing crumbled for some reason and I had not gotten something out of it.
