Op is scum of the earth. Plain and simple. As someone who just recently started up a bitcoin website, the kind of person that would do what he did deserves no recognition nor a "pat on the back" for e-mailing the site admins after it was too late. You need to send the bitcoins back to them. Just because you've e-mailed them (supposedly) doesn't in any way make what you did right. Give them their coins back, however minute the amounts may be.

There is no such thing as free bitcoins. Someone lost them for you to gain them.

But seriously guys I don't think the site gives a shit about the 3 bitcoins I "stole" from them. I don't even know if it was the receiving end's error, it could have been the site I was sending from (yet I would hope that site would not act in such a way, being widely used). I'm pretty sure if any of you found this you wouldn't have posted it on this forum period. I was just curious to know if anyone had encountered such a transaction error before.
Yes I have. I double clicked on a withdraw function, and was paid twice. I tested it with a smaller amount, and clicked on the button as many times as I could. I was sent 15 or 16 of the same amount, and for both instances my account was only debited the original transaction. I informed the site owner, and asked where I could send the coins back to and how to reproduce the result. He took the coins back and I wasn't awarded for it, and I'd do it again. But that's just me. My dad taught me that honesty isn't doing the right then when someone's watching, but doing the right thing when no one's there to watch you. Crypto currency makes it really easy for the eyes not to be on you.

The right thing to do is contact the site and let them know about the issue and return the coins. That's the right thing. But may not be part of your moral fabric.
You guys are right. I did contact the site admin.I do hope the website gets the problem resolved, or if it wasn't the fault of the casino site then I really cannot say how it happened, either way I'm sure they won't mind me keeping the 3 btc.
Kudos on starting to do the right thing. Think of this: If you ask them if they would like you to send it back and how to do so and they provide you with info, then they needed it more than you. Otherwise, they might just tell you to keep it with their thanks. Either way, you build a bridge instead of burning one. Take it from someone who has made it a habit of swimming; life is easier with bridges.

I do not think it is the currency that does it. It is the distance and the view that the other guy can take the loss. For instance people would likely return the money to a small shop, but if the cashier at some major chain gave them extra change they might be less inclined to mention it. They might still avoid making it public knowledge, but they are less likely to correct the mistake. The feeling is that the corporations can take the loss without even feeling it where little old you gets significantly more satisfaction out of the same money. I think part of it is also that they are faceless. People feel less bad about the suffering of strangers than they do people they know. It sucks to know that people are being evicted from their homes. It really sucks to see your friend kicked out of his home. I am not saying that it is right. I am just saying that that may contribute to the issue. The nature of digital currency may contribute to making the other person more of a stranger, it is not the currency itself that creates the problem.

I recently had the possibility to exploit a bitcoin accepting merchants site to gain my orders worth (~400$) and for me there was no tought process involved.. when I discovered this I immediateley started typing a message to them explaining what had happened and all the information regarding the events leading to this, asking where and how to pay. I consider my reputation here and within the bitcoin community to be worth so much more than that and losing a merchants due to issues like this very very bad for our beloved bitcoin.

I'm not in a place to give moral advice, but I thought this might make it clearer for tou:
You're in a garage having your car fixed. You pay the mechanic's assistant $100 for your $70 expenses, but the assistant gives you back three hundred dollar bills mistaking them as tens. You don't tell the mechanic or the mechanic's assistant. You go to your local library and post on the bulliten board what you did instead of telling the mechanic or assistant.
Digital currencies screw with people's morals, it's plain and simple. The ease of sending, recieving, losing and spending these fun bucks pave the way for all sorts of mental acrobatics regarding what is acceptable behavior or not. I once let this affect my judgement and was subsequently outcast from the community for basically not taking things seriously. A word of advice: take ot seriously. You'll be rewarded much more for it.

I withdrew the coins right away and the transaction did in fact go through, I made 5x my initial small amount out of nothing. I'm going to see if the site is still doing the same thing. If it is I'll make my fortune then let you guys know the name :p

@OP: I've made it a practice of rewarding people for finding mistakes of mine and I am sure many others are similar in this practice. Keeping a few bitcoins due to an error is a cheap lifestyle that will not carry you very far. What do I know though, I have a scammer tag for making a similar lapse of judgement.

You could get rewarded more than that if you report it to site owners, depending on their policies regarding service bugs.

In case that is a bug the correct behaviour would be to contact the site instead of trying to steal as much money as possible. A good admin would then give you a reward for finding a such a heavy bug.

If they screwed up and credited you for each attempt to send coins instead of waiting for them to be confirmed by the network it might be possible. Improper coding of a site can do weird things. I am sure that they will eventually figure out their error. My concern is what happens to you when that happens. I would suggest withdrawing the coins, so that they can not be taken away when the site figures out that they were credited in error.
