While I do find that trading altcoins compares very well to gambling, people without any kind of experience in this market must not dive into it as they will surely end up with losses. It's not that hard to find out where to put your money. Bitcoin..... Hold it, or use it to trade on the BTC/USD market.

Distribute your money. Dont put all eggs in one basket. You need to be wise in buying cypto. Do some research and you need to know how to read charts.

5000 dollar is a good amount for investing into the bitcoin, its not too high and its also not too low.
Overall I think you can make a lot of money with 5000 dollar but you have to invest it also in other things from the bitcoin not only the bitcoin itself.

Buying mining hardware with that amount can help him a lot and because he will mine altcoin it's sure that is will be more profitable and easier to mine than bitcoin. But he needs to learn about mining first by doing research about the basic terms and possible problems that he will face. So he will be prepared and he will not regret his decision.

if you ask my suggestion i will suggest you try divided your money to any other crypto currency buy half ot it in bitcoin and the other half is to altcoin just ask professional first what kind of altcoin had good for longterm trading.
