The "Sign Message" feature is an advanced functionality of the Bitcoin client which allows you to sign arbitrary messages to prove to somebody that you are (were) in control of the funds of some Bitcoin address.

you can refer here how does a sign message work?

Signing a message using your address is a surefire way to verify that you are indeed still in control of the account. If you can sign a message with the bitcoin address indicated in your account, then we can say that you are the true owner of the account. This can be done on your wallet. Btw, which wallet are you using?

Being able to sign a message proves that you indeed have ownership of the address in question.  For example, I can prove I own the BTC address in my profile by signing a message with it.  You can verify my ownership by comparing the message, signature and BTC address.

It's a useful way to tell somebody, "I am who I say I am."

First you should stake your BTC address somewhere (edit: a good option is here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/stake-your-bitcoin-address-here-996318). Make sure it's an address you have full control on (not xapo or such).
And at some point, in case your account is stolen, you want to sell it or.. whatever else you need to prove yourself, you'll have to provide signed message from that address.

Conclusion: just stack your address and you can learn later about signing.

How does signing a message affect your account?

It is important because you can prove ownership of your account just in case your account got lost or hacked.
