A user already brought up same suggestion though he was saying of having event notification update or something similar, to me if the telegram bot can still works more better what is the reason for bugging theymos to work this to effect?
We have been doing this by using bots to get notifications what is the extent of causing more update to the forum since the telegram bot is working perfectly fine you can activate any board you wants to receive there notification when posted.

**In BTC since 2013**
I understand the idea that the person will immediately receive a notification when they are browsing the forum, of a response given in a topic.
But honestly I don't see much advantage in anything other than the third-party and native solutions that exist.

In addition to the third-party tools that have already been referenced in this topic. It also has the native option of being notified by email whenever there is a new post in a topic (and then receiving the notification as with emails). As well as the "watchlist" option, which allows you to check new posts in all the topics you follow with just 1 or 2 clicks.

There's a whole child board dedicated to it - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
And if you do some searching around you'll find posts from theymos talking about it.
Thanks for the info, I have spent a lot of time on this forum but till now never get to hear about it, I think everything has its time, and this was mine. I will spend some time on this child board and will look around if anything gets my attention. Although there are many old topics on this child board, and I wonder why I did not come to know about it till now.

Well, thanks to you, I noticed your reply, if I had not, then I might not have been aware of this child board. Thanks to you, Many users have shared their suggestions which they want to see in the new forum, and I believe not so much have been done but a little work might, be like security feature which admin have recently added.

Why bro?

If you use telegram, TryNinja has an awesome telegram bot that will notify users almost instantly, and you can get notified with that. If you do not use telegram, you can use loyce.club as a web notifier. You don't have to download anything. I am using it for a couple of months and it's not bad at all. I don't know what your requirement is. I do not care if it notifies me with some delay. So, I am using loyce.club because whenever I will have time, I will check if someone mentioned me or not. If I want instant notifications for mentions, new topics, I can use the telegram bot. Right?

All I'm really asking is for a button that would collectively that tells you what went on with your account while you're away, at least without having to check on your bot-integrated telegram and risk getting your identity stolen and used for scams especially if you're a prominent figure here, or through emails which pose their own sets of risks as well.
It sounds like you're looking for my notification bot: no email, no Telegram, Tor friendly, no add-ons, no browser-integration, just a static web page that gets updated every 6 minutes.

people are literally able to code Doom on pregnancy tests
I'l be impressed if they can get Bitcointalk notifications on said pregnancy test Tongue

I looked it up: he swapped the screen and controller, and added a keyboard. That's not playing Doom on a pregnancy test, that's installing a small Doom device inside a pregnancy test. With the same hardware you could claim you installed Doom on a lighter or a piece of wood.

which new forum software are you talking about, is there any on the way/roadmap, I mean did theymos or any official make any statements about new forum software or UI etc?
A new forum software (epochtalk) has been in the works for a number of years now. But from the look of things, not much work is being done.

There's a whole child board dedicated to it - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0
And if you do some searching around you'll find posts from theymos talking about it.

I can' agree more with you OP, you said well, I don't use an email notification system, I use a TG bot and that works fine by me, and talking about the evil factors you have aforementioned, I don't know how sex predators fit into that, as I don't come to see anything like that on TG if you are talking about those fake people messaging you about different offers, then I suggest you to avoid them or set privacy that only friends can message you. That way you can avoid yourself from those evil factors.

Other then this solution, I also agree with yours, I mean it will be so good to get notification from the forum it self, but I guess the forum (As we know based on the web) so it won't be that effective in terms of getting notification as we can get in TG. Like in WEB base things, either we have to open the browser in the background or the website all the time, which become resource wasting. SO TG is much better, if there are better ideas in web base notification.
Theymos know all these and likely all will be included in the new forum software. But it has taken too long.

it's quite the cumbersome process having to check your email, or download an application arguably riddled by sex predators, hackers, and scammers every single time you wanna know if you got notifications.
I don't know if SMF supports the feature you're suggesting and there are ways around using telegram safely and not getting exposed to the dark side of it, if you want to consider that option.

Not a complaint but a suggestion too, imagine if you get notifications straight into the forum itself, you'd be able to quickly get into the action, seeing who sent you merits, flags; who replied to your comment and a snippet of what their comment was to give you a little bit of context, replies to posts you made comments on if possible, (or this is not you and you'd like to argue), drop some insights below.
We can already see who sent us merit using a increase in our merit count as a notification, flags as well, if we visit our trust page. Replies to our posts and comments is the one aspect the forum does not have without an extension.

I'm not asking for dedicated notification buttons for every single type of activity within this forum because that would defeat the purpose of convenience that I am driving here. And it's not like it's that difficult as well, people are literally able to code Doom on pregnancy tests as we speak and we couldn't implement this feature because?

Although I've been enlightened a little bit about the ins and outs of the forum and why it just wouldn't work/it wouldn't really work in favor of the developers if we implement such a major feature in the forum, it still kinda upsets me as I've said in the past that we had to go through this cause of limitations, when I've seen other forums be able to do more with their site.

So basically the problem lies around the fact that SMF has had its limitations brought about by the passage of time and it being an ancient forum-providing system, and not necessarily about the unwillingness of the developers (no offence meant) to create such feature?
Not really. Think of the forum as Bitcoin Core: it provides the basic functionality, and nothing more. Any user can build applications on top of it. If for example Electrum breaks something, Bitcoin Core still keeps running. It's the same on the forum.

In general, anything that can be done external from the forum should be done external from the forum. It's less convenient, but also less work for Admin and for sure doesn't introduce other complications on the forum. I've seen some of theymos' upgrades that had "side effects".
So basically the problem lies around the fact that SMF has had its limitations brought about by the passage of time and it being an ancient forum-providing system, and not necessarily about the unwillingness of the developers (no offence meant) to create such feature? Cause all this time I was under the impression that the only reason why we still don't have this feature is because the devs just don't see value in creating such features when Tryninja and email push notifs are easily accessible, LOL. In that regard I wouldn't really take it against them anymore, but it's quite a bummer that all because we're working with a potato system/platform we couldn't get some nifty features that would make the user experience here quite a spectacle.

In any case, I guess we couldn't really expect such a feature to come up in the foreseeable future given the lack of hope in some of these comments, I've also seen some people just flat out prefer options that would require you to enter even more cumbersome processes as a user, sadge.

There was a suggestion from TryNinja ----> Demand for non-Telegram forum notifications?
and as a result of this demand, we may see the possibility of receiving notifications either by email or website. If it is via email, you can customize notifications to your phone, smartwatch, or anything else you want.

We've made and seen more than a dozen decent forum feature recommendations mate and nothing has come out of them. Let's just accept the fact that SMF is very old and that Theymos probably finds the current forum not worth upgrading lol (which I kind of understand? but I guess you can pay a decent dev in a 3rd world country.)

Jolly? I think I've heard that name before. hmm
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only bloke in here who's seen potential in a comprehensive notification button/tab on the forum. If this is you (or this is not you and you'd like to argue), drop some insights below. Thanks!

Are push notifications like Twitter or Facebook?

As far as I know SMF doesn't support push notifications so it looks like something like that can't be implemented unless theymos change the CMS. But I hope my guess is wrong because I also hope there is a notification like that

But actually notifications like that are not very useful because we don't usually make short comments like on Twitter or Facebook, most members also don't use cellphones to comment on forums so even though there are notifications, I'm sure the function will be the same as a Telegram bot, just to find out if someone mentions us and we will answer them using a computer

Eventually I would like to make an extension/code that integrates my bot with a notification button on the forum. Of course that's not native to the forum, so not the definite solution that everyone wants. Tongue

This is unlikely to happen, unless @PowerGlove do his revisions, but if we will expect for admin, no he won't. This should be implemented on the new forum software but it looks like it just tale now.
For now the telegram bot is enough it's good alternative.

It is handy if you receive notifications and directly from the forum but as of now, I use TryNinja's telegram bot which also have same features except it is not directly in the forum but I don't have problem using it and what I preferred using. For those who use mobile devices can reply much faster because if you click on the link and will open up a new window that uses google chrome browser and reply right away (have done it myself). The bot has tracking feature for new topics and can also track a certain topic for new replies. You cab just create new telegram account and only set the telegram bot and nothing else if you don't want scammers sent you PMs.

You're right, getting notifications right in the forum sure would be handy instead of that janky watch thread button we gotta click now.  But even if it's a good idea, dunno if the admins can actually make it happen on these old forums.  Would be sweet on the new software whenever that rolls out, like _act_ said might happen.  Fingers crossed I guess.

Since Ninjastic telegram bot gives me notifications of new topics, I have preferred to use it. I use forum notification bot through email for replies. Both are quite good.

Just a thought. It could really help us out too especially for those people who are very invested in certain topics and would love to see if someone replied to their posts, normally you'd get these in your email or through a telegram bot if I'm not mistaken (at least for me) but it's quite the cumbersome process having to check your email, or download an application arguably riddled by sex predators, hackers, and scammers every single time you wanna know if you got notifications.

Not a complaint but a suggestion too, imagine if you get notifications straight into the forum itself, you'd be able to quickly get into the action, seeing who sent you merits, flags; who replied to your comment and a snippet of what their comment was to give you a little bit of context, replies to posts you made comments on if possible, the world is an oyster and all we really need to do is get this implemented, cause at the very least for me and my friends who use bitcointalk we never really got much value out of the watch thread button, and besides the messages tab showing you how many messages you've received so far we don't really have an idea of what went on with our bitcointalk journey for the day.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only bloke in here who's seen potential in a comprehensive notification button/tab on the forum. If this is you (or this is not you and you'd like to argue), drop some insights below. Thanks!
